2011 Jul 03 U-S-A, U-S-A: Celebrating America's Birthday in Beijing

The United States of America (also known as the United States, the US, the USA and America – thanks, Wikipedia) celebrates its independence this Monday and for many, many Beijingers it's an excuse to act even more American than usual. Local Canadian blogger Beijing Boyce has already offered some ideas for where his cousins-to-the-south can celebrate and we've got some more for those who have made no plans for face paint and fireworks yet.
The usual pro-American suspects of the Saddle, Kro's Nest, Lush, Pyro, Fubar, Luga's Villa, Stumble Inn, Union, Paddy's and Blue Frog will likely be jam-packed like it's a presidential election, but here are some other options.
The Culture Yard is holding an Independence Day Cook Out, which might be like a barbecue or Bar-B-Q or BBQ. There is also a hot dog-eating competition, which an American will likely win. They suggest that you wear red, white and blue. Give them RMB 100 and you get "all food and one beer." The same deal is RMB 80 in advance – call them on 8404 4166 to book your spot.
NOLA – short for New Orleans, Louisiana – shows Treme, the New Orleans-set television series, each and every Monday. The Fourth of July is no different and why should it be? Comfort food from the American South and the best show currently on the box is a surefire winner.
Casa Latina serves Mexican food and has a Cuban house band which means it is as American as Taco Bell. Monday is industry night – the industry in question is the F&B industry. Show your business card and get 30% off. That should put anyone in the party spirit. That and the potent cocktails anyway.
If you're looking for some ideas about what to eat, check out these posts on America's most well-known foodstuff.
And if American Independence Day is not your bag at all, then here's something that might suit you more.

2012 Reader Bar & Club Awards: Bar of the Year

With all the results announced on Saturday at our 2012 Reader Bar & Club Awards party, now it's time to take a closer look at who won, who narrowly missed out and what it all means.
Yesterday we looked at the "Club of the Year" winners, so today we'll move on and look at the other one that everyone wants to win: Bar of the Year.
2012 Reader Bar & Club Awards: Club of the Year

With all the results announced on Saturday at our 2012 Reader Bar & Club Awards party, now it's time to take a closer look at who won, who narrowly missed out and what it all means.
Let's start with one of the big ones. Traditionally, we've given a single "Bar of the Year" award marking one venue out above all others. In 2004, the very first year of the Bar & Club Awards, a nightclub (Cloud Nine) actually won the top award, but since then the Bar of the Year award has been dominated by cocktail bars (Centro, Q Bar, Mesh), all-rounders (Fubar, First Floor, Browns) and a sole rock venue (D-22). This year, we decided to give the clubs more room by creating a "Club of the Year" award to parallel the "Bar of the Year" contest. So what of the "Club of the Year" winners?
Bikinis and Beach Balls: Photos From The 2012 Reader Bar & Club Awards

If you were one of the approximately 1,200 guests who came along at some point to our 2012 Reader Bar & Club Awards party at Sanlitun Soho on Saturday, we hope you had a good time. The numbers suggest that you must have - collectively, we managed to get through around 700 liters of beer, not to mention countless bottles of spirits and cans of wine spritzer. We're also pretty sure some of your memories of the day might be hazy at best, but isn't that what the photo galleries on this website are for?
The Results, Part 2! Who's Won In The 2012 Reader Bar & Club Awards?

(This is part 2 of 2 ... for the first batch of awards, see this post here)
If you've been lounging around at home all afternoon you might well have happened upon our first 2012 Reader Bar & Club award winners post. We could only let you know the winners in the first 18 categories at that stage - we had to save some excitement for the people who came down to the event itself - but now that all the award cats are out of their proverbial bags, we can fill you in on the second half of the winners' roll call. Here they come ...

Home Plate closed July 4-8
Note that Home Plate Bar-B-Que will be closed for July 4-8. Other restaurants on the same strip are also being forced to close for these few days. Pity, as it would have been a popular spot for Independence Day celebrations. If you were hoping for pulled pork sandwich and corn bread, make other plans.

"All Chaoyang street vendors are not allowed to do business during the day from July 4 to 8, while the district is under investigation by the Capital Spiritual Civilization Construction Commission Office," a Web user dubbed hongjiuzhongdeyan posted to Weibo after failing to find a breakfast vendor on Monday.
