Dong Liang Studio: An Ode to Chinese Designers

Charles Wang first came to Beijing for its art scene. Five years later, this Jiangsu native and his partner Nam Lang are running Dong Liang Studio, one of the first stores to exclusively stock Chinese designers. They opened the first branch in Wudaoying Hutong, the second one down the road – and their third is slated to open in Shanghai later this month. We spoke with Wang about his prescribed recipe for good style, and which music artist he’d most like to see naked.

Who was your first style icon?
My language teacher – she was really beautiful and stylish.

When did you first decide to devote your life to fashion?
Actually, it was never a conscious decision. My partner Nam is a graphic designer who just wanted to open up a design studio to help support our friend’s designs. After he found a spot, he began selling clothes by other designers as well. The focus gradually shifted to fashion.

Why is it important to support Chinese designers?
China already has so many places selling overseas brands, but very few showcasing the growing variety and quality of domestic labels. So many Chinese designers are doing great work, and they deserve our support.

If Dong Liang Studio was a band, who would it be and why?
Muse! They’re so cool, and their music is timeless.

Which musician would you most like to dress?
Beyoncé Giselle Knowles.

Which musician would you most like to undress?
Beyoncé Giselle Knowles.

What’s an item in your closet that you wish you’d never bought?
Too many to count! [laughs]

What makes an outfit?
Find your own sense of st yle, one that suits you and only you. Don’t blindly follow trends. Most importantly, master the art of mixing and matching different colors and details in one outfit.

Which style trends do you wish would just go away?
Men wearing heels. I’m personally not a fan.
