2011 Jul 29 Come Out for Jing Pride: Grace Su Dishes on Closing Party

We already got a taste of the growing Pride movement back in May, when Beijing celebrated International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) for the third year in a row. Now we're nearing the end of the biggest Jing Pride we've had to date. We spoke to one of the organizers, Grace Su, about Beijing's LGBT community, sex toys and what to expect from tomorrow's closing party.

What's your story? Where are you from and how'd you get involved?
I was born in Beijing and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area until now. I've always loved the vibe of Pride – people are just crazy and happy to be themselves. The Jing has some of the craziest people, so let's get that crazy out of them.

How many Jing Prides have taken place now, and how is this year different from those held in previous years?
Last year was a one-day bash at Lantung. This year could have been just a week of G&L events that were already around and that would be easy to organize. But that wouldn't be something we could be Proud of. That is why we made the opening at ROOMbeijing special and plan to do so for the closing party tomorrow afternoon.

Capture the spirit of Jing Pride Week in three words.
Pride. Acceptance. Fun.

What's the current climate like for Beijing's LGBT community?
There's a bunch of cool people in the community, not just your stereotypical LGBT activist. But there are not enough cool parties with great content to be proud of – that is why we are doing Jing Pride.

This was a weeklong bash – how has the public received the celebrations so far?
Much better than expected.

What'd you think of the ROOMbeijing opening party?
Kokoh Conley's performance really rocked it and showed us what Pride really is – not giving a damn about what other people think. (See photos from the event in our online gallery here.)

Why should we come to Saturday's bash?
In the same way that ROOM had that awesome surprise performance at the opening, there will be a surprise this Saturday, too. Look out for party favors distributed by Sweet Toys sex shop, other fun booths and RMB 30 drinks to the end. High-energy DJs Mo Li, Juliana Lima, and Kefra have also prepared house and electro Pride tracks.

Jing Pride Week is almost over – how can we keep on supporting the cause?
Watch out for more events with great content, such as WET in August.

Anything else to add?
This Saturday, rain or shine we are going to rock the Jing Pride closing party this Saturday because that's what Pride is about – nothing is going to stop us. We've waterproofed our sound system and have big umbrellas on standby in case of rain. See you there!

Show your true colors at Jing Pride's closing party this Saturday at Danger Doyle's from 5-10pm. Get more details from our Bars & Clubs Editor here.

  • Party Like It's Almost 2012: New Year Parties!

If you're reading this, I expect you, like me, are in Beijing for the holiday period. I'm not going to pretend that Christmas is magical here - though plan it well and you can at least enjoy yourself with your mates (and family, if you have any out here) - but Beijing does New Year's Eve pretty well. You can head to the big parties like Yen's Countdown, Acupuncture's Genesis and newcomer Nova, enjoy the high life at places like Xiu, or neck cheap drinks at the likes of Luga's Villa. Of course, almost every bar you go into will be celebrating, but we're here with a roundup of everything we've confirmed so far.

  • Clubhouse: Josh Wink To Play INTRO 2011

UPDATE: In a change to the original plan, organizers Acupuncture Records have announced that May 21-22's INTRO 2011 electronic music festival has been moved to 751 D-Park in 798 Art District - the event will not take place at Tongzhou Canal Park as previously advertised.

Philadelphia’s Josh Wink was at the forefront of the early ’90s rave scene in the US, melting dance floors and scoring hits with tracks like “Higher State of Consciousness.” Two decades on, Wink brings his record bag for a headline set at the biggest weekend on Beijing’s electronic music calendar, INTRO 2011, which takes place May 21-22 at 751 D-Park in 798 Art District (moved from originally planned Tongzhou Canal Park). We warmed Wink up for Beijing by asking him about Star Wars, Radiohead and his shifting perception of the humble banana.

  • 2012 Reader Bar & Club Awards: Club of the Year

With all the results announced on Saturday at our 2012 Reader Bar & Club Awards party, now it's time to take a closer look at who won, who narrowly missed out and what it all means.

Let's start with one of the big ones. Traditionally, we've given a single "Bar of the Year" award marking one venue out above all others. In 2004, the very first year of the Bar & Club Awards, a nightclub (Cloud Nine) actually won the top award, but since then the Bar of the Year award has been dominated by cocktail bars (Centro, Q Bar, Mesh), all-rounders (Fubar, First Floor, Browns) and a sole rock venue (D-22). This year, we decided to give the clubs more room by creating a "Club of the Year" award to parallel the "Bar of the Year" contest. So what of the "Club of the Year" winners?

If you were one of the approximately 1,200 guests who came along at some point to our 2012 Reader Bar & Club Awards party at Sanlitun Soho on Saturday, we hope you had a good time. The numbers suggest that you must have - collectively, we managed to get through around 700 liters of beer, not to mention countless bottles of spirits and cans of wine spritzer. We're also pretty sure some of your memories of the day might be hazy at best, but isn't that what the photo galleries on this website are for?

  • The Results, Part 2! Who's Won In The 2012 Reader Bar & Club Awards?

(This is part 2 of 2 ... for the first batch of awards, see this post here)

If you've been lounging around at home all afternoon you might well have happened upon our first 2012 Reader Bar & Club award winners post. We could only let you know the winners in the first 18 categories at that stage - we had to save some excitement for the people who came down to the event itself - but now that all the award cats are out of their proverbial bags, we can fill you in on the second half of the winners' roll call. Here they come ...
