2011 Aug 25 Talking Pints: Lantern Reopening, Phil Drummond, Andhim, News From Great Leap and Peter Hook Tickets

A massive weekend in store, with Lantern set to reopen at Gongti West Gate (in a basement space behind Xuxian Lou restaurant) on August 26 (the party continues on August 27), and Berlin electronic duo Andhim playing at Tango on August 27 (RMB 50). For more on Lantern’s revival, see our previous post here. For the rest of the weekend's bar and nightlife news, read on!

A lively weekend also at Xiu. New house band Xpress debuted last night and will be playing almost nightly. Meanwhile, Ministry of Sound-affiliated DJ Phil Drummond is making a guest appearance on Saturday night (Aug 27) – entry is RMB 100 and includes a glass of champagne.

Great Leap Brewery has been the subject of some heated debate in our User Reviews section this week, but the team is getting on with business as usual. Their “Liu the Brave” peach molasses stout is back on tap, there’s a new set of Great Leap T-shirts, produced in association with Plastered, and brewmaster Carl Setzer has several craft homebrewing workshops coming up at The Hutong – there’s one tonight (Aug 25), one on September 9 and one on September 23. Get in touch with morgan@thehutong.com or call 6404 3355 to book a spot. Finally, they’re doing a beer-and-cheese tasting with Le Fromager de Pekin on September 4 at Great Leap. Taste four brews and somewhere between four and six cheeses for RMB 100. The event runs from 3-8pm.

Last weekend, I got a little preview of what’s to come from Haze, the new venue from the White Rabbit team. The new spot is at Guanghualu Soho, and features an upstairs bar, a rather precarious staircase (perhaps best to leave the high heels at home) and a pretty nifty, minimalist downstairs space. Official opening is set for September, but no date just yet.

Tickets for the hotly anticipated Peter Hook set at Tango on September 3 are now on sale here. Look out for our interview with him on p37 of the Beijinger’s September issue – read it online at Issuu.com.

After a few weeks of indecision, it’s been confirmed that DJ Shadow’s October 1 set will take place at Mix.

The latest Spirit It! cocktail class takes place this Saturday (Aug 27) at Fez. The theme is tequila, the price is RMB 188 and the class runs from 6.30-8.30pm. Email bobspirit.it@gmail.com to book a spot.

VS Lounge has its latest "Lingerie Fashion Show" this Saturday (August 27). That starts at 10pm and costs RMB 80.

Finally, the Guardian has published an article delving into the “rise of binge drinking in China,” looking at how your drinking credentials can even help you get a job. See, coming to China did make us all more employable after all.
