2011 Nov 23 Nice Cans, Rotarians! Rotaract Charity Food Drive this Sunday

Good morning students! Here's an early-morning pop quiz for you. The photo above is a depiction of:
a) Y2.011K food hoarding
b) Mass purchase of rice due to rice weevil infestations in Dongbei
c) Students picking up their tuangou (just about to pick up those instant noodles now!)
d) The fruits of Rotaract Beijing's 2010 Food Collection Drive
e) All of the above
If you answered e), go get some more coffee. If you answered a), b) or c), you need to reassess your reading material. It is indeed a picture of Rotaract Beijing's 2010 charity food drive for orphans, and this Sunday Nov 27, they're going to do it again.

This year, all food collected will again go to Guang Ai orphanage, to tide them over through the difficult winter. The best way to help, of course, is to drop into one of the four participating Carrefour stores (listed below), and buy a truckload of supplies. Last year, they collected four Jinbeis full of food, and they hope to double that number this year. Some of the major items they're looking for are rice, cooking oil and flour.

Alternatively, if you're interested in helping these guys out with volunteering on the day, please email them ASAP with:
+ What time you could help (either 10am-12.30pm or noon-3pm Sunday)
+ Your mobile number
+ Number of volunteers you can muster
Email the leader in charge of your desired store directly - so don't email the nice Ciyunsi guy if you'd like to help out at Zhongguancun. That's just silly. Check here for maps and addresses of stores. Here are those all important email addresses:

Q&A: Rotaract Beijing

Rotaract Beijing is a community service organization sponsored by the Rotary Club of Beijing. Since 2009, they have been collaborating with local charities to host fundraisers and speakers, as well as to raise public awareness of ongoing volunteer opportunities. This month brings us their Artjamming Fundraiser (Feb 25), with proceeds benefitting Shelterbox. We asked their treasurer, Crystal Lo, about what to expect from an evening of painting and socializing over wine.
Last Chance to Buy Chi Fan for Charity Tickets!

Foodies and do-gooders unite – tonight’s the night you’ve all been waiting for. The third annual Chi Fan for Charity dinner will kick off citywide at 7.30pm, with the Hatsune after-party to follow at 10pm.
As expected, there is only a limited quantity of tickets left for both events. Just two days ago there were twice as many, so the few that are left will also probably be snatched up fast:
Chi Fan With Alan Wong, Kristen Lum and Stacey Lee Mitchell

The event on everyone’s lips still has seats left for purchase, though perhaps not for long. Chi Fan for Charity 2011 held its press party last night at the Westin Chaoyang’s Touch Bar to bring together the restaurateurs, media, table hosts and 2011 beneficiaries. They noted that they were not far from reaching their target goal of RMB 300,000, and that there remains a range of prices (from RMB 500 to 1000) and cuisines (from Spanish tapas at Carmen to Indian at Punjabi) to choose from.
If you’re still on the fence, we’ll let the CFFC table hosts and organizers do the talking. (See our earlier post for founder Michael Crain’s responses.)
Living La Vida Local: China Prom, Breast Fest and NGO Networking

First things first: Drop everything if you haven’t made copies of your passport/visa yet or gotten your housing registered. It’s certainly better to be safe than sorry, and besides, who wants to live in fear in Beijing until August? For more tips on precautions to take these next few months, click here and here. Once that’s taken care of, you can actually look forward to all the fun going on this week. Other than our Bar & Club Awards, there’s a charity networking event to get you hooked up with local NGOs, a food fair at Central Park offering free massages and breast exams, and last but not least, China’s very own version of a prom tomorrow evening.
