2011 Dec 01 Weekend Live Music Roundup: Hedgehog, Boys Climbing Ropes, Invisible Landscape

It's another diverse weekend in Beijing’s music scene to keep the city heated and, as usual, we've a rich list of choices: rock, folk, jazz, electro, indie, and musical experimentalists are on the menu.

Those punks from Subs haven’t played a lot recently, but front woman Kangmao’s folk group Bye-bye Thanks For Your Fish has been on almost every weekend. They'll be jamming alongside some other interesting characters, like electro-folk Zhang Si’an, at 2 Kolegas tomorrow night.

Also Friday, the noisy youngsters of  Hedgehog figure it’s time to have another big party. They'll gather their fans at Yugong Yishan. Two Shanghai indie groups, Boys Climbing Ropes and X is Y will start their Beijing weekends at D-22 with other indie friends. They wouldn’t come all the way here for just one show and you can catch them again at Yugong Yishan on Saturday. The same venue will go ever-so avant-garde on Sunday, when you can check out what kind of Invisible Landscape the Japanese will bring. If you are into experimental sounds, it's time to consider Zajia your regular hangout. Song Yuzhe brought a brilliant session there last weekend, this Saturday it's Yan Jun's Subjiam and Li Tieqiao's Shengdong Jixi project which will collide.

While some say hello, some say goodbye – Black Cat Bone made their official “Lights Out” statement earlier this week. You might not get their infective rock gigs again, but you will still catch those rock veterans offstage. Here are all the gigs worth seeing this weekend.

  • Weekend Live Music Roundup: Mamer, Longshendao, D-22's Last Night, Death Cab For Cutie

Breaking news. Death Cab For Cutie will play in Beijing this March. More details to follow.

The biggest annual migration on the planet officially started last weekend. Some of Beijing’s musicians have already left town. This weekend is likely your last chance to appreciate the loud and noisy music scene before it vanishes along with all the cars in the streets and people on the subways during the Spring Festival break. Interestingly, all the big acts still in town are setting the stage for some historical performances.

  • Christmas Live Music Roundup: Voodoo Kungfu, DH & Chinese Hellcats, Hedgehog

Somehow Christmas in China has become as ear-torturing as it is in the West – all the malls, restaurants and markets play only Christmas music around this time, and the only Christmas song they know is "Jingle Bells." One day, over a single meal, I heard at least 20 different versions of "Jingle Bells." How creative! Finally, the actual holiday is at the door. Besides the feast you are giving your stomachs, your ears deserve a treat too.

  • Weekend Live Music Roundup: Hanggai, Shanren, Demerit, will.i.am

These past two years have been a booming time for folk music in Beijing. Maybe it’s because more and more people started to find out how easy it is to just pick up an acoustic guitar and sing a song of sorrow with face full of bitterness. The good part is that the really good bands have actually stood out even more. Take Hanggai and Shanren, these are two quite different yet similar bands, one fuses Mongolian folk tunes with the power of rock, the other mixes folk rock with reggae beats. Both are fun, energetic, interactive and exotic. If you plan it well, you might be able to catch both of them tomorrow night.

  • Weekend Live Music Roundup: Brain Failure, Miji Concert, Re-Tros

This will be an amazing weekend for music people. Even during music festivals it’s rare to see so many brilliant characters being so active over a single weekend. Local rock gods, pioneering musicians from the front line, talented young powers, long-term rockers (who have long been underestimated) and many more of our favorite bands will all be out this weekend. Great, but how to decide where to go?

  • Weekend Live Music Roundup: 2 Kolegas' 6th Anniversary, MAO Keeps Rocking

Despite a report today by Global Times claiming that MAO Livehouse would be temporarily closed for the same fire saftey-related reasons as Yugong Yishan, MAO manager Li Tong tells me that isn't the case - it's business as usual this weekend at MAO Livehouse. Local rockers will gather to celebrate their love of uniforms, the upcoming Children's Day and the spirit of "emo."
