2011 Dec 02 Talking Balls: Friday Night Lights

Talking Balls has been locked in meetings for the last few days. This report has been phoned into the office. Apologies, Balls fans.

NiuBBall has dropped the first CBA Power Rankings and the Beijing Ducks are top of the table. If they stay unbeaten they’ll deserve whatever plaudits come their way.

Ye Shiwen and Sun Yang have been named Pacific Rim Swimmers of the Year by Swimming World. People who say Pacific when they mean specific may be confused. Other people might be too, It means East Asian swimmers from what we can tell, not that they have been swimming the high seas.

Basketball fans are getting the NBA for Christmas. You’ll be seeing Yi Jianlian there. He’s binning off his hometown to get back to the big time.

Well done to the Beijing Devils for being the best team at rugby in China. There’s more on their site here.

Another well done to their sisters at the She Devils. They have taken their clothes off for rugby. See more in our Sports Feature here.

Yao Ming cut class to sell his wine and then he found time to give a soon-to-be-retired TV commentator a commemorative jersey. Yao is making the most of retirement.

The NFL is now on PPTV. Details can be found here. Touchdown.

Another week and another Who's Hot and Who's Not. This week going unbeaten is so hot right now and selling wine ain’t. Take that basketball.

And finally, Gorbachev has not been in the news for a while. He is now. The photo at the top of the page is him presenting chess grandmaster Hou Yifan with the Women’s World Chess Championship.

Happy New Year! That’s for the last one, not the upcoming one. Our gift to you includes links to the first two “Who’s Hot and Who’s Not In Chinese Sport” columns of the year from China Daily. It’s the same as ever, apart from the fact they no longer separate out the "Who's Hot" from the “Who’s Not.” How will we know which sports stars are worthy of our ire if we have to read all the way through?
Anyway, here are  the first and second. The latest features Top Gear racist Jeremy Clarkson offending another nation.

  • Talking Balls: Tiger's Coming, Ronaldo's Not plus Some Rackets and Some Raquets

Tiger Woods is reported to be coming to Beijing on April 13. The golfer's Japan "Make It Matter" tour was cancelled and sponsors Nike thought that golf in China could use a boost (or that there was another burgeoning market to exploit) and rescheduled the trip to include Beijing and Shenzhen. Lock up your lapdancers.

NiuBBall has made its predictions for the CBA playoffs. Beijing scraped through in eighth spot and were given the tricky tie of top seed Xinjiang. Hopeless is the only word for the Ducks' chances against a team with one loss in the regular season.

  • Talking Balls: Blazing Trails in Portland, Costly Foreign Faces and Those Downtrodden Ducks

New Year’s resolution for sports have always been associated with winning another champion or breaking the world record, but for China’s sportswear tycoon Li Ning, his resolution is open his first US store in Portland on January 4.

  • Talking Balls: A Smoking Rocket, Marbury Mania & The Olympic Underground

The Olympics are around the corner, or should we say, further along the line. Transport London, which runs the capital's world-famous Tube, have decided to cash in on the Olympics. They've released a map with a twist: All of the stations are now named after famous Olympians. We admit that it's better than the 2012 mascots but as merchandise goes, it's still pretty bad. There are 13 Chinese Olympians on the map:

  • Talking Balls: Will The Ducks Be Mighty?

Tonight at 7.30pm, the biggest ever game in Beijing basketball tips off. The Ducks are at home to Guangdong Southern Tigers in game five of the CBA Playoff Finals. The Ducks are 3-1 up in the series and one game away from greatness. If you're reading this, then you're not at Wukesong watching history being made but that doesn't mean you need to miss out. There are a number of terrestrial TV and online options to catch the action. BTV and CCTV will be showing the game live but if you don't have access to a TV, why not watch a webcast on Sohu, CCTV 5 and PPTV? We'll be back with a full-size Talking Balls tomorrow. Let's hope that there's good news to fill it.
