2011 Dec 22 Capital Bites: Hello Kitty Anticipation, Temple Brunching and Win New Year's Dinner!

Growing up without an extended family around, Christmas was always a perfunctory affair with just a couple of gifts and maybe a short holiday. Why break with tradition this year? I will be fleeing for slightly warmer shores shortly. However, if you, dear Reader, are staying in Beijing, we've got some glorious eating options for you, and also a chance to win a New Years' dinner for two (including free-flow alcohol) at Kerry's Kitchen in the newly-renovated Kerry Hotel. Trust me, it's pretty swish.

If you're still looking for a holiday meal out, here's a veggie option. The Veggie Table will be running four days (Dec 23-26) of their Chrismukkah set menu. It's RMB 208, with more details available here.

If you're still looking for a holiday meal, and want lots of options, check out our Christmas dining blog posts here, here, here and here.

I got really excited on Tuesday night (Dec 20) because I thought Hello Kitty Dreams was finally, finally open. How I wanted to dig into kitty-faced mousse and nom adoringly into a sandwich with kitties grilled into the top. It seems their official opening day has been pushed back yet again to Dec 23.

Temple Restaurant Beijing is quietly making themselves known. I think they're still technically in soft opening mode, but they've recently launched a weekend brunch at RMB 350 per person, including tea or coffee. If you've been, do us a favor and let the rest of us know what you think in the directory.

New cafe Ocean Grounds is open in U-Town.

Frozen yogurteria YoGood has closed in Fulllink Plaza. Good luck to anyone else opening in that spot - it's a hard nut to crack.

Finally, I was at Kerry's Kitchen recently, trying their a la carte dinner option. As a dessert fanatic, I am fonder of their buffet lunch option (with amazing cake selection), but the quality of options at dinner is really incredibly impressive. Check out this sweet thing - pandan Swiss roll - with fresh fruit on the side. Maybe you'd like to give them a try? We have a voucher for two for New Year's dinner at Kerry's Kitchen (including free-flow alcohol!) and all you need to do for a chance to win is to answer one simple question: what's the worst New Year's resolution you've ever made? The winner will be picked at 10am next Monday (Dec 26) so get those entries in!

Anyway. An early happy holidays to you all! Remember to snack safely

To never make a New Year's resolution again.

Year 2000: marry myself off by the summer.

Re: Capital Bites: Hello Kitty Anticipation, Temple ...

Once I vowed to not date anyone for the year. You can guess how that worked out. Well, at least I didn't meet anyone at the New Year's Party....

Re: Capital Bites: Hello Kitty Anticipation, Temple ...

To stop wasting time entering online competitions that I never win.

Re: Capital Bites: Hello Kitty Anticipation, Temple ...

I tried to catch them all one year. I wanted to be the very best like no one ever was. It seemed rational at first. I developped good rapport with a pretentious professor and won research grants to keep my pursuit going.
I never expected to get constantly harassed by an evil corporation. They took all my gear, racked up legal fees, stole my John legend concert tix and my girlfriend, Jessie ( she loves jlegend).
This year all I want is a free dinner and the cozy warmth of a thundershock.

Re: Capital Bites: Hello Kitty Anticipation, Temple ...

I guess one of the worst New Year Resolutions would be: "To try and change some person". And don't know about New Year ones, but I definitely have made multiple unsuccessful attempts to stop using Social Networking sites!

Now that 2012 is almost here, wish all the readers a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

To go for a run outdoors 5 times a week. And then I moved to Beijing...

  • Capital Bites: Wintering at Ssam, Kro's Pizza Cup Party and Hello Kitty Opens for Business

It was a good week in food. Yes, the weather is terrible. Yes, nobody else can breathe either. Yes, all of it yes, yes, yes. But you gotta focus on the positives of being in the Beej. Maybe you've got an ayi who'll wash your window frames for you. Maybe you have the luxury of supporting yourself easily (*cough*English teachers*cough*) while figuring out what you want to do in life. Maybe you're in a city where world-class cuisine is comparatively cheap. So, y'know, go out and get some this weekend.

(Oh, and in case you forgot, we ran this little pizza competition a while back. Now we're throwing it a party. Keep reading for details and more food news.)

We mourned the passing of Ganges in Sanlitun Village South, but they promised they'd be back soon with a new Sanlitun venue. It's not open yet, but for details of where you'll find it, here's this week's installment of Capital Bites.

  • Capital Bites: CRU Lunching, Excellent Italian and More Shark Conservation

It's just about time for lunch now, isn't it? If you're close to Dawanglu today, consider a visit to CRU Steakhouse. Their new business lunch is three courses for RMB 168+15%, admittedly on the higher end of things. If you're the kind of person willing to splash out a little bit on lunch, I recommend it unreservedly. Business lunches are kind of the Enomatic machine of the spendy restaurant world: low risk, comparatively low prices. There are some establishments at which I would have never dined, had I not lunched there first. If you're not the type to pay that much, I have another lunchtime recommendation for you. Keep reading for that, and other dining news.

  • Openings & Closings: Where to Eat During Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is great! (Chinese New Year is boring.) There's family to see and warmth to share! (I just got back from Christmas overseas and all my friends are heading out of town.) Hey, maybe I'll get a few hongbao! (Damnit, more of this giving-money-away business?!) We're all gonna make dumplings and eat sweets! (I've blocked out my last solo jiaozi-making venture, it was too traumatizing!) Check out this massive pile of fireworks my uncle bought for us! (How am I going to sleep this week?!)

The only annoying part is that my favorite restaurant is closed ... boo! (I can't even get a decent meal.)

Love Chinese New Year or hate it, we can all agree – restaurant closings are a massive downer during the holiday period. For your edible convenience, we've compiled a list of restaurants that will still serve you up a feast during the upcoming vacation.

  • Capital Bites: First Meals & Last Bites

First broken resolution of 2012: "get up earlier". First food regret of 2012: overcooked beef tenderloin. First nutty food discovery of 2012: BEIJING DUCK FLAVORED PRETZ. I found these in a jumbo pack at Qingdao duty-free, of all places, for RMB 200-ish. Other interesting "Chinese" flavors include Shanghai Hairy Crab, Guangdong Shark Fin Soup, Sichuan Mala, Oolong Tea, Lychee and Chestnut. Please, please, please keep an eye out at your convenience store, your supermarket, your xiaomaibu - and let me know if you find these little gems. Or if you happen to pass through Qingdao Duty-Free and have a spare RMB 200. There is a reward: I will buy you a sandwich.*

Now, onto eating news of a bit more import.
