2012 Jan 06 The Challenge: Speed Gloving

For the month of December, we were determined to beat the Guinness World Record for “fastest time to put gloves on 10 people.”
Current world record time: 02:13:30 (set by Gao Bo on CCTV in Beijing on August 16, 2011).

There are only two rules for this particular Guinness World Record:
• The attempt may involve any type of gloves that can be purchased.
• The glovees cannot make any motions to assist the glover.

Here’s how we did:
Jerry, Editorial Director: 01:35:00
Tiffany, Style Editor: 01:46:20
Lizzie, Intern: 01:48:00
Jonathan, Managing Editor: 02:18:40
Lovely Lady A, Moment Café: disqualified
Lovely Lady B, Moment Café: disqualified

NB: We think we did something massively wrong. Even after looking at the official champ’s video on Youku, we can’t work out how we managed to beat his time. We’ll happily claim a brand-new Guinness World Record, though.

Can you do better? We reckon you can. If you agree, then upload a video of yourself taking the challenge at Guinnessworldrecords.com. To see which record we’ll attempt next, stay tuned TheBeijinger.com but word is that the Worldwide President of GWR may be directly involved.

Re: The Challenge: Speed Gloving

I for one am proud to say I now own the world record for "gloving."

  • The Challenge: Balancing Pencils

We’re always getting called pencil pushers by the other departments. We thought we’d show them who was a pencil pusher by breaking the Guinness World Record for Most Pencils Balanced On End In One Minute. At the very least we hoped it might be quite good practice for the inevitable return of chopsticks in one of our future record attempts.

  • The Challenge: Eating Rice

This month, we decided to go back to our trusty old friend, the chopstick. We had good memories of chasing M&Ms around a plate with the sillysticks, so this time, we’d try to claim the record that’s begging to belong to China: Most rice eaten in one minute.

The rules are simple: The grains of rice must be eaten, one by one, using chopsticks. The current world record: 23 grains (set by Rob Beaton of the US on November 12, 2008).

  • The Challenge: Leapfrogging

Last month we thought we’d broken a Guinness World Record and then we thought we hadn’t. It turns out, after some consultation with China’s own Guinness World Records adjudicator, that we may indeed have set a new record for speed gloving. This news put a spring in our step, so it wasn’t difficult to pick the next record to attempt: the most leapfrog jumps in 30 seconds by a team of two. Better yet, the current record of 25 was set in Tokyo. They might have more Michelin-starred restaurants but there’s no reason they should have more records.

  • The Challenge: Peeling a Boiled Egg

It’s been a while since any of you lovely readers had a go at challenging a Guinness World Record with us. We’re sure that you have been breaking them left, right and center in your own time but are just too modest to say. Knobs to that, we thought, we’ll drag you kicking and screaming into immortality. And so it was that on the night of the Beijinger “Pop-Up Magazine” event, we made three unwitting members of the audience come on stage and take the shell off a hard-boiled egg. What fun. But what of glory?

  • Want To Be A Record Breaker? Join Us In Trying A New World Record

You'll have already seen that we were challenged by Guinness World Records to help Beijing set some more records. You'll have also seen that our first attempt ended in spectacular failure.

We're not going to let the M&M-chopstick debacle derail us, though. No, we're going to power on in our quest to enter the record books. This time, we're determined to beat the Guinness World Record for putting gloves onto 10 people.

The current time to beat is 02:13:30 and was set by China's very own Gao Bo on CCTV in Beijing on August 16 of this year. We want your help to beat it. If you're up to the challenge, meet us at Moment Cafe in Sanlitun Soho at 2pm on Tuesday, November 8.
