2012 Jan 10 Playlist: Jurat T.T

“Myth” by Beyond.
I especially like the band’s first and second albums. The feel of this song is like a fairy tale.

“Hey You” by Pink Floyd.
The bass in this song is excellent. The guitar and vocals are very subtle and very dark.

“No Quarter” by Led Zeppelin.
At the beginning, the keyboards and the melody of the vocals give you a spooky feeling – it feels like vampires from 100 or 200 years ago. I favor darker music.

“The Court of the Crimson King” by King Crimson.
It’s like listening to an old tale in a royal court. Very regal.

“Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers” by Jeff Beck.
This song was written by Stevie Wonder. The guitar part is just incredible. Every time he plays this live, it’s different and amazing. The melody is heartbreakingly beautiful.

Smell that? It’s the scent of the ’80s. These British pop rockers write frizzy riffs reeking of big hair spray. At first whiff, music snobs may turn up their noses but then they end up headbanging along. What truly stinks is the troupe’s choice of band names – they formerly went by Rat:Daddy and then Idiot 3.

Gothenburg may be known as the cradle of melodic death metal, but it also nurtured the much gentler indie sound of post-rockers Immanu El, whose atmospheric pluckings have been compared to Sigur Rós and Mogwai. In less than four years, the quintet has played almost 200 shows in over 25 countries. Before finally landing in China, frontman Claes Strängberg had some thoughts to share with us.

Brazilian producer and DJ Gui Boratto studied architecture, but abandoned a prospective career in construction for a life in music. We asked him a few questions as he readied himself to headline this weekend’s INTRO Electronic Music Festival (May 26).

This month, Acid Live celebrates three years as Beijng’s pioneering acid jazz outfit. In those three years they’ve made an indelible imprint on the music scene in Beijing with their live shows becoming famed across the land. As they come of age (in dog years) and get ready for their big birthday bash, they reveal just how acerbic they’ve become down the years.

The International Day Against Homophobia (May 17) was established in 2003 to generate awareness of unjust treatment and discrimination based on sexual orientation. In 2009, Tongyu (Common Language) made Beijing the first city in mainland China to celebrate IDAHO. We talked to local program director Karen Liao about how we can all rally behind the cause and join in on the festivities.
