2012 Jan 22 WasPark: Cuteness and Cheeseburgers in Soho

Like almost everything in Soho Shangdu, this tiny cafe is hard to find. You might be charmed by cheerful owner Mela and her cute Chinglish messages, handwritten on chalkboards. If Amelie had her own cafe, it would have been like this. The prices certainly appeal – burgers start from just RMB 17. And the cheeseburgers are good, in a get-what-you-pay-for kind of way. The bun is dry, the whole package a bit roughand-ready, but the effect suits the cafe’s DIY style.

The bigger problem is WasPark’s tendency towards the shambolic. The place was closed when we arrived, due to Mela and her cook popping out on an errand. Understandable, but other customers might understandably not wait around – call before you go. With only one cook, the service is also uncomfortably slow.

Cute is fine, but the disorganization might just test your patience.

Standout dishes: Cheeseburger

WasPark Mon-Fri 11.30am-10pm, Sat-Sun 1-10pm. Unit 2369, 3/F, North Tower, Soho Shangdu, 8 Dongdaqiao Lu, Chaoyang District (5869 2884) 朝阳区东大桥路8号Soho尚都北塔3层2369室

The fact that they have only one cook isn't why your food won't come quicly (it's a tiny little place, even if they're packed he'd be able to keep up), it's because they are cooking the burgers in an oven. This DEFINITELY changes the quality of the burgers from what you're probably used to. It's a lateral move, I'd say. Also the buns are dry because they're pretty heavily toasted. Whether that's a plus is a matter of preference.

Try the curry-flavored hamburger patty.

  • Fit For a King: Feast Offers a New All-You-Can-Eat Option

The first thing that strikes you about Feast is that it’s a fine-looking restaurant. Of course, nobody really comes to a place like this to enjoy the design, so it’s just as well that the all-you-can-eat offerings deliver. Mix up your own salad to ease yourself in, and try not to overindulge in the bread and cheese selection – you’re going to need every inch your stomach allows.

  • Malay Day: Malaysian Cuisine at Little Nyonya

Since the term nyonya refers to the women of Chinese communities in Malaysia and Singapore, pretend with me for a second that Little Nyonya, the restaurant, is an actual woman. She’d be the kind of gal you could take home to meet your mom: reliable and demure, not the most glamorous, but someone you can settle down with. She does, after all, know how to cook.

  • Stylish Sichuan: Syringa Opens at China Central Place

If you love the food at Chuan Ban, but find the environment a little too “authentic” for out-of-town visitors or a date, Syringa may be your best new alternative. The kitchen is staffed with Chuan Ban alumni, but the setting is cleaner, fresher and has a certain rustic-chic meets cliché-contemporary-art charm.
