2012 Jan 22 Year of the Dragon: The Making of a Legend

Happy New Year of the Dragon! We had a heck of a time making our annual live-action comic strip so we decided to give you a look behind the scenes. These candid snaps don't show much evidence of our arguments, tears and nagging fear that we'd get arrested, but we hope they do give you an idea of the nonsense that we went through in an attempt to put a smile on your lovely faces.  Enjoy your holiday – we'll be spending ours trying to procure a snake for this time next year.

Beijing's a city that has grown up a lot in the last couple of decades. The skyline is now festooned with buildings that beggar belief and defy description. This month, we're taking a long hard look at the structures that experts have deemed the city's ugliest. Some we're glad to defend, others we're happy to deride. Now you get to make up your own mind.

  • Out Now – the Beijinger – April 2012: Who Won?

It's that time of year again where you've told us exactly what you think of the city's dining scene in our Reader Restaurant Awards. For the ninth year running, we've expanded the categories to match Beijing's growing gastronomical tastes and then put it to the public vote. Perhaps you agree with the results, perhaps you don't – but this is what Beijing thinks of its culinary content in 2012.

  • Pop, Pop: Win Tickets To the Beijinger's Pop-Up Magazine

After the historic premiere of live-action Choose Your Own Adventure, the Beijinger is proud to present its first-ever Pop-Up Magazine. What's that, you ask?

A pop-up magazine follows in the footsteps of other exciting "get 'em before they're gone" happenings that have become so popular in recent years. Pop-up shops (Beijing's had a few now), pop-up bars (Great Leap are currently pioneering this approach) and pop-up Ramen Street (our office favourite) spring to mind. We're getting in on the act and creating a live-action version of the Beijinger magazine at The Bookworm International Literary Festival. The event takes place this Friday, March 16th and starts at 8pm. We're giving one lucky reader a pair of tickets (worth RMB 160). Read on to find out how to win.

  • Out Now - the Beijinger - March 2012: Break Into Publishing

Experience should tell you that Beijing is a city of writers. Why else would that be everyone's response when asked, "And what do you do?"

It seems that everyone's got something to say and in the Beijinger's March issue we want to help you say it. There are interviews and handy advice from some of the best authors and publishers in the game - and not just for print. We've also given you a how-to guide to both pitching and starting your own writers' group, plus we've our favorite 50 entries from the "Your Beijing In Just Six Words" competition.
