Wukan: Not Your Average Hair Salon

Wukan is no ordinary hair salon. Natural sunlight spills in from the tall glass windows. A DJ booth is parked in the corner, sitting atop stacks of old record albums and home décor glossies. The concrete floor and unfinished ceiling show closer resemblance to the refurbished factories in 798 – but perhaps that is precisely the point.

The sign outside identifies the space as a “Hair Design Bureau.” Owner Daczong (who studied in Japan and previously worked at C. de France and Franck Provost) explains that they don’t just snip hair here – they provide individually tailored services to help clients “design” new looks, if they so desire. He openly scorns trends, instead encouraging people to trust their instincts and be willing to experiment. Haircuts start from RMB 260, but are currently half-off for soft opening.
