Underground Kidz: Dress Like a Rock Star

Thrift stores come and go, but not Underground Kidz – this Gulou stalwart has been in business for over six years. They’ve simply moved down the street, into a new space that is bigger, badder and more grown-up than before.

Whereas the last shop was distinguishable by its bright blue exterior, this one relies on more rustic décor detailing: sleek wood panels, a striped awning, a recessed entryway. Inside, the rock tunes on blast and the familiar collection of all-things-retro remind us that the management remains the same. Ever wonder how rock stars dress like? Even if you’ve never met owner Liu Hao (also the bassist of Beijing band Joyside), you can easily grasp his aesthetic – the man knows what he likes and carries it in bulk: flannel shirts (from RMB 99), trefoil tracksuit tops (from RMB 150), vintage tees (from RMB 49) and denim jackets (from RMB 199).

Indulge in: Denim jacket with plaid collar (RMB 399)
Also try: Bye Bye Disco, Tiger Vintage

Was expecting this sentence - "Whereas the last shop was distinguishable by its bright blue exterior, this one relies on..." - to end with "a giant anthropomorphic owl above the door with spotlights trained on it." That's what caught my eye from the street, at least! I never noticed the owl on Gulou before, so I assume it's a new addition.
