2012 May 18 Living La Vida Local: China Prom, Breast Fest and NGO Networking

First things first: Drop everything if you haven’t made copies of your passport/visa yet or gotten your housing registered. It’s certainly better to be safe than sorry, and besides, who wants to live in fear in Beijing until August? For more tips on precautions to take these next few months, click here and here. Once that’s taken care of, you can actually look forward to all the fun going on this week. Other than our Bar & Club Awards, there’s a charity networking event to get you hooked up with local NGOs, a food fair at Central Park offering free massages and breast exams, and last but not least, China’s very own version of a prom tomorrow evening.
Before heading over to our beach-themed bash tomorrow afternoon, you should make time for The Bookworm’s NGO & Charity Networking Day. From 10am to noon, participating charities from all sectors (including Teach for China, RISE Tsinghua, Chi Heng Foundation, and many more) are setting up booths to hand out informational pamphlets and to connect with interested volunteers. If you’ve been hankering to get more involved in the community, here’s your chance. Now is not the time to be lazy.
Later that evening, Starfish Project is hosting its annual China Prom, this year at 4corners. The event functions as both a charity auction and party to raise funds for the women that Starfish Project supports. You can learn more about the work they do here (www.starfish-project.com). Tickets cost RMB 50, and once there you’ll have the chance to win generous prizes at Black Sesame Kitchen, The Hutong, Bodhi Spa, Tranquil Tuesdays and more. While not traditional in every sense, this prom does promise a dance-off and the crowning of a Prom King and Queen. Doors open at 8pm.
Beijing’s very first Pink Day takes place in Central Park on Sunday, May 20 from 1-5pm. The food fair event, also referred to as “Breast Fest,” will feature Beijing restaurant vendors, a bounce house, a charity garage sale, massages and manicures courtesy of Hummingbird Therapeutic Retreat and Wellness Spa, and free breast cancer screenings (including consultations and examinations). All proceeds will go China Breast Cancer Foundation. You can read more about what to expect on LumDimSum's blog. To volunteer or get involved, email pr@hummingbird.net.cn.
Also consider trying out Gift of Hope’s traditional egg carving workshop on May 26, taught by a master craftsman. You can read about our experience with the class here. Anyway, there are many more events worth checking out that weren’t mentioned above that may be better suited to your interests (see below). Enjoy.

Runners with a Conscience: Join the Starfish Project

The Starfish Project is many things: a jewelry brand, a shelter, a business and a charity. Their core purpose is to help and empower exploited women in Asia by providing them with counseling, housing, health services and, perhaps most importantly, vocational training for alternate employment. While the organization’s goodwill work is widespread, this October they're taking it local by organizing a running team for the Beijing Marathon. Anyone interested can join them for their last few weeks of training (read below for details). We talked with director of operations Pip Nelson about the sensitive nature of their work, the public’s misconceptions and the value in handcrafted jewelry.
Living La Vida Local: Test Your Wits, Join a Startup and Watch Chinese Women

Ever watch that show “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” This week, anyone up for the challenge gets the chance to participate. In other news, there’s a startup forum for young entrepreneurs (or just dreamers) as well as a traditional crafts workshop that raises awareness about the local disabled community.
More than a Masseuse: Bethel China Foundation for the Blind

“A lighthouse is a place designed to help you get to a safe place,” Guillaume Gauvain, founder of Bethel China Foundation, told me. The Lighthouse Project is the name of this Beijing-based charity’s fourth training center, set to open in Changping District in October. The site is currently being renovated to accommodate the multi-handicapped blind orphans it will soon house. Bethel has been raising funds since May 2012 and now only has one month left to take care of all the furniture, maintenance, medical, transportation, utilities, rent and administration expenses before they launch. We asked Mr. Gauvain about Chinese braille, games that the visually-impaired like to play and how to prepare blind children for adult life.
Give Hope Through Education: Become a Sponsor at New Life Centre Today

The New Life Centre, a residential learning center for underprivileged youth, is now urgently seeking sponsors. We spoke with founder Ginny Bai about giving migrant children hope through education.
World AIDS Day: What You Can Do to Help

Since 1998, Chi Heng Foundation (CHF) has provided basic sponsorship (art and music therapy programs, summer camp and entrepreneurial training) for over AIDS-affected 13,000 children, and the organization is now in the process of expanding its social enterprises. In observance of today being World AIDS Day, we asked CHF’s founder and chairperson, Chung To, to break down the myths of this stigmatized epidemic.
Who is eligible for CHF funding?
We have very clear-cut criteria: Their parents are either living with HIV or have died of AIDS. We are not a poverty-relief program, nor a region-specific program. But we do end up supporting more kids in poorer villages simply because the parents who have to sell blood were usually poor to begin with.
