2012 Jun 22 Living La Vida Local: Your Turn to Be a Superhero

Have you seen Avengers yet? The ratings are through the roof, but that’s not why I mentioned it. If you’ve ever wondered how it feels to be a superhero, this week is full of opportunities to swoop in and save the day.
We posted about a fellow expat named Yvan earlier this week who was recently diagnosed with leukemia and is now urgently seeking a bone marrow transplant. Unfortunately, his odds for a compatible match in Asia are very low; according to his doctor, there is a 1 in 50,000 chance of a match from non-Caucasian donors and 1 in 5,000 from Caucasian ones. His friends and family are now reaching out to the expat community to register this week (until Jun 29) as donors at Beijing International SOS. If you’re not convinced, take part in the info-session event this Sunday. Get all the details here. Just remember: You could be the one person who can save this man’s life.
Yesterday we also appealed to our readers to help out the Beijing LGBT Center, who were recently evicted from their home for the second time this year on account of being an LGBT organization. You can get the full story here. In order to keep their important social programs and activities running, they need to find a new space within the next month. Scour our Classifieds for a place that meets their qualifications, consider making a financial contribution (they’re losing thousands of renminbi in the move) or simply attend one of their upcoming events to show your support.
Greening the Beige has announced that they are launching a “Green Hall of Fame” which will pay tribute to all their generous supporters. Anyone can be added to “this distinguished list of eco-minded superheroes” (their words, not ours) by simply making a one-time contribution that will go towards this year’s annual eco-art event series in Beijing (Nov-Dec 2012). You can click here to visit GtB’s current fundraiser campaign on Indie Gogo before Tuesday, July 3. If your current financial state won’t allow for you to donate, they ask that you at least spread the word.
Oh, and Happy Dragon Boat Festival. If you’re not at work today, we suggest you mosey on over to The Hutong for their gourmet zongzi-making class. It's your last chance this year.
Now what are you waiting for? The people will be chanting “[insert name here] to the rescue!” in no time.

(Sorry, fellas – that means this talk is open to ladies only.) If you’re curious about the inner workings of movie production, drop by the Royal Smushi House on August 29 at 6.30pm. Living La Vida Local: Movie Quiz Night Rescheduled and Mexican Cooking Class

The bad news is, Migrant Children’s Foundation’s Great Big Movie Quiz Night didn’t take place on July 11 as originally planned. The good news is, it’s been rescheduled for July 18, which gives any interested participants even more time to prepare. More details on that below, as well as on Roundabout’s latest new location, a beginner digital photography workshop and a Mexican cooking class at the newly opened Q Mex.
