Dong Liang Studio's Movin' On Up

Those who loved Dong Liang's two shops on Wudaoying Hutong might mourn their move to the "soulless" high-rises of Central Park, but the bigger, cleaner space gives the well-curated pieces more room to breathe. Definitely a good thing.

The new shop stocks many of the same designers as before: Vega Wang, Uma Wang, He Yan, Manchit Au (Ricostru), Fake Natoo as well as newer arrival Bin Bin with her label, TBA (To Be Adored). So there are no big surprises there.

Still, there's plenty to catch the eye of the fashion-obsessed in the shop's latest arrivals of Fall/Winter fashions. If you're looking for new pieces to wear to the office, you won't want to stop running your hands over TBA's silk blouses and dresses – particularly a handsome black number with a white contrast collar (RMB 2,650).

The slightly edgier set will like Fake Natoo's quirky details, like the lightning bolt lapel on a cream oversize coat (RMB 1,850).

While prices are definitely intimidating, we have to admit these clothes are tantalizing. Case in point: True to minimalist form, Ricostru has turned up several Lyocell dresses that I'd want to sleep in if they didn't cost almost half of next month's rent.

Dong Liang's two shops in Wudaoying are now shut. When asked if the move was entirely their choice, co-owner Charles Wang said they'd always been looking for a larger space and added, with a shy smile, "It's better here."

The verdict hasn't changed much with the studio's move: This is for people serious about fashion, dedicated to seeking out the best (and most tasteful) Chinese designers and who are willing to put their money where their mouth is. The only difference is that the shop might be a little closer to their target audience – especially where that last point is concerned – in their new surroundings.
