Out Now: the Beijinger October 2012 Beyond the Lens

We're turning 11 this month so we asked ourselves what we wanted for our birthday. We decided that we wanted you. To be specific, we wanted your stories of what Beijing means to you in the year 2012. And what better way to tell those stories than in pictures? This month's anniversary issue Cover Feature is a six-page spread of your contributions and we couldn't be more thankful.

In between sessions of stuffing our faces with birthday cake, we managed to fill the rest of the issue. In the FOOD & DRINK section, we asked master bartender Paul Mathew to psychologically profile some of our readers by creating each of them a cocktail. We also preview the upcoming Chi Fan for Charity 2012 (get your tickets starting Oct 8) and found out what CFFC supremo Michael Crain would eat on his last day in Beijing. Then we went for a drink with photographer-to-the-stars Matthew Niederhauser and bravely breakfasted like a Beijing baoan as we sampled supermarket sausages for Taste Test. And that’s not even mentioning our reviews of the newest bars and restaurants.

Our GO section features gadgets for the zombie apocalypse, the spookiest Beijing ghost stories, the eerie peace to be found in breath-hold diving, and tips on surviving a siege (hint: it involves donkey curry). There’s also collars for all occasions and a sneak peek of the exciting film series we’re running with Electric Shadows. As always, we’ve also got big prizes up for grabs. Will you be the one who wins the prize worth RMB 30,000?

Meanwhile, we have a few more people we’d like you to MEET. We have exclusive new work from a trio of slam poets – Luka Lesson, Omar Musa and Bohdan Piasecki; each has written us a poem inspired by a photograph. You'll also find our regular Q&As with extraordinary Beijingers (including the debut of our new Q&A column, Screentime) and we've caught up with grime royalty Terrah Danjah and some puppetmasters.

Finally, we look into the causes of Beijing’s recent rainstorms, the Peking Man’s "farewell letter," and enough Events and Directory listings to guarantee that all your weekends hit the right note. Get a copy around town, get the PDF here or read it right now.
