Out Now: the Beijinger June 2013 - Drinking Games

This month's issue of the Beijinger is a little bit different from what we've been doing for the past 11 years. As we approach our 12th birthday, we thought we'd get a little more hip - we're not too far off being a teenager, after all. That's why this month you will notice a couple of changes.

  • Our brand-new size - the same as National Geographic China
  • Improved paper quality - you can feel it in your fingertips
  • A brand-spanking-new Events section
  • iPad-optimized PDFs on Issuu.com - see the magazine at its digital peak

But enough about the changes. Here's what's exactly the same. The great content that you have come to rely on us for is all still there. So here's exactly what's going on in this June launch issue.

The Cover Feature shines a light on our city's barmen and their hidden skills to mark the results of the 2013 Reader Bar & Club Awards. We've pitted some of Beijing's best beer-peddlers, brewmasters and boozehounds in a battle to the death, well, a battle to the lightly bruised and delightfully boozed. There's an Olympics like you have never seen before and don't want to miss.

FOOD & DRINK has undergone a bit of a makeover but you'll find a Drinks Feature on Beijing's craft beer scene, a Dining Feature on the best way to eat your booze and in Taste Test we've tried all the Yanjing that we could stomach. There's also pigeon and beer in Alleyway Gourmet, a familiar face in Cocktail Profiler and Last Orders with the lovely Miss Rose. We've still found room to stuff in a bit more content including the best new bars and restaurants of the month.

GO skates into June with a guide to skating the city's streets in time for World Skateboarding Day, lots of prizes and the best party gadgets. We've also packed in a couple of new venues for you to try and some ideas if you're skipping town.

MEET is packed with Dominic Johnson-Hill walking us through Plastered's best-ever designs, Paul Afshar's uniform past and Tom Carter tells us what is on his bookshelf. We also meet Ian Syer of Beijing Cricket club for a not-so-quiet drink.

What else is there? ECOLOGY takes us to the Tibetan plateau to talk photography, the Peking Man channels Lionel Shriver after her recent comments on our fair city and then there's the EVENTS section. We'll let you see that for yourselves.

Read it online above, download it from Issuu.com or look for a copy around town.
