Capital Bites: Discount Cakes, Morning Bagels and Paleo Salads

Sweet tooths, take note: Ida Collins of The Fat Bunny Bakery is offering a 10% discount on all large cake orders until July 19. I can tell you from experience that if you want the refined sugar this country is lacking, Collins is your lady to fix that. Visit www.fatbunnybakery.com to check out the options and create your own.

The food bar on the rooftop at Migas is back at it (on fair weather days, that is). Starting this month, you'll be able to order from selection of options such as mini-burgers (with beef, chicken, Iberian ham or vegetables), salads or ice cream to enjoy on their Nali Patio terrace.

If you're currently a man or woman of leisure and unhappy about it, Nali Patio neighbor and Beijing mainstay Alameda is looking for an assistant manager. They are asking for a bit of experience (internships or otherwise) in hotels or F&B. Contact alameda_beijing@yahoo.com for more information.

More doors continue to open in Parkview Green. My Humble House has just opened a new branch in the green eco-lifestyle center on Dongdaqiao.

In honor of their fourth anniversary, Japanese joint Suzumei over at Sanyuanli is offering 30% off on their food from July 15-20.

Joining the migration to the Xingfucun neighborhood, Cafe de la Poste has started a new venture called O'Steak. We haven't yet had a chance to drop by, but this sounds like good news, well-known as they already are for a pretty excellent steak.

Bagels are a good any-hour-of-the-day kind of food, but I think they shine particularly in the morning, so it's exciting to hear the the guys over at Tavalin will be opening shop a couple hours earlier. Stop by the west side of Yashow starting at 8am to kickstart your day with carbs and cream cheese.

And if you're looking to carbo-load over in Gulou, Beiluo Bread Bar has started a new weekday pasta deal. Every Monday through Thursday (8-9.30pm), you'll get a glass of Vedett on the house with every dish of pasta ordered.

And if carbs scare you, we know how that is over here at True Run Media. Our own Head Dude and Paleo Diet champion, Mike Wester has been deemed a celebrity chef by Gung Ho! Pizza. Along with two other guest chefs (Linus Holmsater of Heyrobics and director & singer Tian Yuan), he created his own special salad for their summer menu. Currently Gung Ho!'s best-selling salad, his is aptly named the Paleo Salad – seared grass-fed beef, diced cucumber, yellow bell pepper, cherry tomatoes, red onion on a bed of spinach and lettuce sprinkled with walnuts and flax seeds and served with a vinaigrette.

In case you missed it, we announced yesterday that Zach Lewison, the former chef at 3sums, will be heading up the kitchen at the new Home Plate Bar-B-Que location that owners Adam Murray and Seth Grossman are opening in Sanlitun this fall.
