Avril Lavigne Returns to China

America’s pop punk sweetheart and winner of last year’s Huading Award for Best Global Singer is returning to China for the third time. The tour will cover the eight cities of Shanghai, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Nanking, Beijing, Hangzhou, Chengdu and Shenzhen. The Beijing show will be on March 2 at the MasterCard Center, and tickets are currently available through Damai.

I don’t feel comfortable using the word punk to describe this superstar, but she has indubitably amassed a pretty big following here in the mainland. From having some of her songs translated into Mandarin, her hit song Girlfriend being used on the popular dating show If You Are the One and even on a silly iced tea advert, Lavigne has dived headfirst into the saccharine side of China's thriving music scene.

Though it is quite apparent that her star power in North America has pretty much eclipsed, she did an interesting job of re-branding herself for China. She’s kind of like the Nicholas Cage of pop music.
