First Glance: Aluba Livehouse Brings Taiwanese and HK Pop to Sanlitun

Who says livehouses are reserved for the grungy, rock & roll drags of Gulou? The China View complex at the east side of Workers' Stadium has gained a livehouse, and it comes in the form of clean lines, wide open spaces, and fine lighting. In fact, the only messy aspect we've seen of the place so far is the destroyed remains of Taiwanese barbecue and only because it was so darn good.

With floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Gongti, a wraparound balcony, concrete floors, and an offbeat collection of historical Taiwanese treasures (including clothing and a prized tribal canoe), Aluba Livehouse is a welcome addition to Beijing's growing assortment of industrial-style venues. We wonder how long it will take before its spotlessness gives way to graffiti-covered walls and the wear and tear (and love) that gives Mao Livehouse its character, but we suspect that may never happen. Aluba certainly gives off an air of sophistication we have yet to see in a rock livehouse in Beijing.

Even further differentiating themselves, Aluba's owners say they don't plan on booking any major local punk acts just yet. Their main focus is to bring in Taiwanese and Hong Kong popstars who have yet to perform in Beijing.

But before that, Heineken is teaming up with Aluba to put on Battle of the Bands: Beijing City Finals on July 26, so you'll be able to see the best of the untapped musical talent the city has to offer. Their official opening date is August 2, so this way, you'll be able to get a sneak peak and enjoy Taiwanese-style skewers and RMB 10 Tiger beers. Go here for more info.
