EAT: Pop Up Arepera at 京A and Chinese Wines at TRB

For one night only this Thursday March 5, Mosto's chef Daniel Urdaneta will be taking over the kitchen at 京A for "The Arepera", a very special pop-up featuring South America's best drunk food, arepas. These corn/maize flour buns (think of them as a Latin roujiamo) are popular throughout Venezuela and Colombia, where they come with a variety of meat and vegetable fillings. The Arepera will be serving up beef, pork and vegetarian varieties (at the tasting I attended the beef was definitely my favorite be sure to dip into accompanying chili-herb sauce!). Why one night only you ask? Well, they had to raid the kitchens of the South American embassies around town to get enough flour for just this one event, so don't expect to get another chance to taste them anytime soon! It goes without saying that they pair up pretty will with one of 京A's many craft brews.

Across town, TRB is hosting well-known French wine critics Michel Bettane and Theirry Desseauve for a gala dinner focusing not on French wines as you might expect, but Chinese wines. Priced at RMB 880 per person, the evening includes a discussion of Chinese terroir and the different wine regions in China, followed by a gourmet dinner paired with Chinese wines.

Finally, those who have been to one of Great Leap's Chef and the Brewer events in the past will want to grab a seat for the latest installment this Saturday, March 7. This time they are teaming up with Chef Rob Cunningham from EAST Beijing for a family-style brunch banquet complete with free-flow pale ale and pilsner, held at the newest GLB #45 Brewpub.

Other dining events and promotions this week:

  • 29 Grill's Chef Yannick has teamed up with Soul Collection Gallery to offer a changing four course menu inspired by the gallery's beautiful pottery. The menu, for RMB 588, includes a plate to take home.
  • Reboot your mind and body post-Spring Festival with Spoonful of Sugar's new healthy lunch sets for just RMB 69.
  • Seafood and eat it at Feast's regular Friday seafood night
