Xiao Sushi Delivers on Cheap and Fresh Rolls in Yonghegong

Located close to Cafe de la Poste on the east side of Yonghegong Dajie is a relatively new branch of the sushi chain Xiao Sushi. It's easy to miss during the day, but at night it's atmospheric lights pave the path towards fast and decently-priced sushi.

After sitting down, we were presented with a steamy soup containing pieces of salmon, very thinly sliced potatoes, and lots of ground pepper. A great touch on these nippy days, and great to keep your hunger in check as you browse the iPad menu, which is only in Chinese.

It doesn't even really matter that the menu is in Chinese as there aren't any descriptions of each of the roll's contents anyway, but if you zoom in on the pictures enough, you can basically figure it out. Otherwise, just pretend you're playing an game of sushi roulette where every outcome is a winner. The youai jinxiang roll (有爱尽享) was very tasty and filled with prawn tempura, crunchy sliced cucumber, and topped off with Japanese mayonnaise and roe (RMB 45). The mayonnaise was a little much though  asking for less might be the way to go.

We also had the avocado (RMB 8), cucumber (RMB 8), and salmon (RMB 7) maki rolls, which were tasty and clearly freshly made. There was really nothing wrong with these, although they are pretty hard to mess up. Our one dud choice was the crayfish salad nigiri, which tasted much too sweet and was slobbered with mayonnaise: there is definitely a theme developing here.

While Xiao Sushi has more roll options than Wudaoying's Sanyouting it's not the place for high-quality sashimi. Even so, I can see myself coming back to satisfy my eternal craving for sushi, and at minimal cost. I'm also quite happy to have another option to the bizarre noodle restaurant opposite Cafe de la Poste for pre- or post-drunken eats.
