Refreshed Menu Puts The Bookworm on Foodie Map

We love The Bookworm. We love their events, we love their book selection, we're huge fans of the annual Literary Festival, but what we didn't love, was their old menu. Now, we Beijing bookworms can rejoice, knowing that not only will our minds and souls be fed, but our stomachs.

Their new menu is pretty huge, still, covering the same broad range as before: breakfast, starters, snacks, salads, cheese platters, main courses, pasta, pizza, sandwiches, burgers, and of course, dessert.

We first tried salads, ordering the Sichuan-style Cobb Salad (RMB 65, pictured at top). While we're not sure where the Sichuan element comes in (the chicken could have more Sichuan flavors), we really enjoyed this mix of chicken, blue cheese, a generous amount of avocado, chopped tomatoes, hard-boiled eggs, lettuce, and creamy ranch dressing.

For something a little more filling, we went for the macaroni and cheese (RMB 55), which comes with a little side salad to balance the guilt. Apart from the cheesy macaroni, a handful of bacon bits mixed through guarantee plenty of flavors. This is one we'll be ordering again, especially during Beijing's colder months.

We were also pleasantly surprised by the Tandoori lamb and chicken kebab (RMB 75), which is served on four skewers. Full of tender meat and crunchy, well-seasoned peppers, it is served alongside a bowl of basmati rice.

As for desserts, we tried both the brownie and the lemon meringue pie, with the brownie emerging as our favorite. The lemon meringue pie was a little bland, but the brownie was delicious and chocolatey, as one would hope, and came topped off with a scoop of ice cream. Expect to see us holed up here on rainy summer days, a book in hand and a comforting bowl of brownie nearby. After all, that's why they were invented, right?
