Make Art in Beijing: Open Call For the 3rd Crystal Ruth Bell Residency

Some great news if you have artist friends in China or abroad who would be interested in living out their creative dreams in Beijing for a couple of months. Red Gate Gallery, together with China Residencies, are calling for applications from people who base their artistic practice in research for a funded residency in Beijing throughout November and December.

A wide variety of creatives are encouraged to apply and submit research proposals specific to Beijing, including curators, writers, researchers, documentary filmmakers, photographers, choreographers, chefs, designers, developers, activists, scientists, architects, and all kinds of visual artists. The residency itself covers a live/work apartment in Tuanjiehu, funding towards travel and visa expenses, airport pickup, project support, USD 1,000 research stipend, and an open studio exhibition.

Apply online by submitting a link to your portfolio and by outlining what you would like to explore while living in China, through the China Residencies website before July 31, 2016. Finalists will be notified by August 20, and the selected researcher will be announced on September 1.

From 2009-2011 Crystal Ruth Bell (pictured above) served as the program director of Red Gate's artist in residency program, here in Beijing. In this period, she had her hand in plenty of creative projects including giving out cupcakes around town from her mint green tricycle in exchange for stories and songs. Tragically, she passed away in 2014 from melanoma, but her memory and imaginative spirit lives on with this incredible opportunity.
