Watch Soulja Boy Crank It and Roll at Club Mix, May 5

Oh sure, youuuuuu’ve rolled your eyes, let on you hated it, and sneered whenever it was played for the umpteenth time. But if you try to deny having a few too many at a party circa 2007 and cranking and rolling along to the beat of Soulja Boy’s inescapable hit, well, none of us would believe you. That’s because we’ve all succumbed at least once to the Chicago one-hit-wonder rapper’s signature dance move which, along with a ridiculous video and some disgustingly juvenile double entendre, helped the goofy MC dominate the charts a decade ago.

Yes that song, "Crank Dat Soulja Boy,” spent 21 one ubiquitous weeks atop Billboard Hot 100 music charts in the fall of 2007 More importantly, however, was the 27 million views the accompanying dance’s instructional YouTube video garnered within a year, not to mention the way that he utilized social media and file sharing services to circumnavigate the music industry, pioneering the self-made-man musical path that has now become all too common in this age of Instagram snapping would be ol’ g’s.

That business savy lead to Complex magazine to call him the “ Father of Modern Rap Music,” in a lushly written lengthy profile last month. The AV Club, meanwhile, published a retrospective of the “Revolutionary,” Youtube channel that Soulja Boy used to catapult himself to fame. And, of course, he’s proven to be a surprisingly resilient master of the clickbait inspiring publicity stunt, nabbing headlines for nearly stepping into the ring with the even more obnoxious Chris Brown, before subsequently calling off the high profile bout.

Regardless of how weird and annoying he can be, Soulja Boy’s mark on the music industry and the unabashed fun one can occasionally have with his music are both tough to dispute. And whether the show lets you show off your best ironic jokes, or indulge in one of your biggest guilty pleasures, its appeal just might be bigger than you think. Remember, you doubted any of it would amount to much a decade ago when you first watched the clip on Youtube. Yep, that’s right: Soulja Boy, the long lasting innovator.
