Beijing is home to a number of great music events every year and countless live shows every week featuring local and foreign artists. It’s maybe no Singapore or New York City, but when it comes to a music scene, Beijing holds its own on an international stage.

The foremost offering of the Beijing music scene is the music festival. Spring and summer every year see a number of music festivals in and around the city that feature everything from rock and roll and hip-hop to experimental music.

Here are some phrases and lingo to help you navigate festival season, including, crucially for Beijing, when the festival you’ve been looking forward to for three months gets canceled as they so frequently do here.
