Mobbed at lunch

I agree with admin that this place is really nothing special, but it's proven decent enough to draw me back a few times. I suppose it's because the dim sum deals (they're now offering 50% off on select dim sum menu items that bear a "double flower" mark in the menu). The pork noodles I had were tasty as well and came in a extra-large bowl with ample meat and long chewy Yangchun-style noodles. Service was courteous but harried, and it took forever for the second half of our order to arrive. Nonetheless, I'd recommend this place for lunch for anyone in the Shin Kong place area.

Ordinary. Except maybe for the fried baozi (sheng jian bao)

This is kind of a hip little place but not terribly exceptional. Except maybe for the fried baozi (sheng jian bao), which is a must-have ... baozi that are cooked by a partial frying/partial steaming method, which leaves the exterior crispy on one side and doughy on the other, then sprinkled with sesame seeds. Yum.

it always mystifies me why Beijingers (especially expats) like to hate on Shanghai -- trash-talking only exposes their insecurity. those who are genuinely self-assured never need resort to hurling brickbats. doesn't everybody know this by now? guess not.

i suppose there's a related reason for the non-popularity of Shanghainese cuisine in Beijing; the flavors of China's southeast trend sweet, which holds no interest for people who are competing to prove their chilli machismo. the grown-ups can join me at Absolute Cate, where we'll feast on big bowls of noodles, pan-fried dumplings and happy treats made of glutinous rice. Also, if you're into xiaolongbao, skip Din Tai Fung and get your juicy steamed dumplings here.
