Great Business Lunch

Review of Alameda

I went here for the business lunch today and thought it was great. There was a wide variety of choices, the quality of the ingredients was great, the staff was attentive, and best of all the food was delicious! The portions were also the most generous of any business lunch I've had in Beijing. I also really enjoyed the atmosphere and they had a nice outdoor seating area as well.

Great place for business lunch, or for a winey dinner!

Not one typically to write reviews, but after many enjoyable meals here (coming since 2005), it is high time to write one about Alameda. Restaurants come and go in Beijing, as does the quality of the food depending on the Chef in the kitchen - providing consistency in the quality of the food over time is something that most places in Beijing are unable to do. Alameda; however, is an exception to that, and they have found the recipe to consistent quality dishes, well trained wait staff, and a wonderful ambience, which always includes the colorful owner and head chef (both Brazilian). I have yet to have a bad dining experience over the several dozens of times I have been there since 2005. And they do this, while at the same time providing what I believe to be one of the best value dining experiences in the SanLiTun area. Their lunch rapido (business set) is still the gold standard for quality food and great price. The Saturday Brazilian Feijoada Lunch specials is one of the best kept secrets in the city, and I highly recommend all to try if they have not yet.

Thanks to the Alameda team for being you! Keep on doing what you do, and I'll be seeing you soon enough...getting hungry just writing this!

tasty food,good enviroment

I've been there at the beginning of january and it was a very good choice for a dinner.
I admit my friend and i had one of our best filet mignon in Beijing, and one of our best dinners
in general! And the dessert with pear was extraordinary i can say!Was really impressed!Expensive but
worth the money for sure.
The service was just ok,indeferent almost. The enviroment was the usual contemporary style, not very spacious but it's ok.The bad thing is that it's difficult to find the restaurant,it's a bit hidden.

Definitely recommend it!

hard rice

They should pay more attention to their food quality and service than their decoration.
With so many other good restaurants around, how dare they serve hard rice that seemed to be scrapped from the bottom of the rice cooker? No one asked me if I found my meal satisfactory.

Shocked by the service

I was shocked by the service there after being recommended this restaurant by many friends. My friend and I ordered 2 sets of different menus and among everything we had, I have to say I liked the appetizer bread best. I wouldn't just give one star because of the food - overall, we liked the deco there and the food is not bad.

What shocked us most is the attitude of the waiter and the waitresses there, I don't know where this western-looking guy comes from, but when the two ladies struggling at opening the door and the scene was right under his eyes, he just stood there and stared at us!! Didn't he even have the courtesy to come and help (or at least "try" to help)??

Somebody next to our table complained about his cold dishes and he changed them, he also helped to open the door with two other ladies who had the same problem with the door but I still couldn't figure out why we were the only table that didn't have any service right under his eyes, not even a goodbye when he saw us leaving!

I ordered some kind of omelet with "buffalo mozzarella" - was curious about the combination- having lived in Italy for over a year, being frustrated by all kinds of "buffalo mozzarella" served in Beijing, I didn't actually expect anything like what I would have in Italy for "buffalo mozzarella". I was still astonished to find out the so called "buffalo mozzarella" was actually Parmigiano, which makes sense with the combination of omelet but did match what the menu says ..... I would think they should at least correct the menu to stop confusing people but my friend was so frustrated that she stopped me from making a complaint and would just like us to leave asap.

By the way, we can be picky but normally from the toilet you tell how considerate and careful a restaurant is - the toilet floor is like flooded when we were there, which didn't please us either of course.

Just Average

The word that comes to mind about this place is "uneven". Good, well-priced wine list, food is so-so. Service is terrible. Setting sort of charming, but exceedingly loud room.

Pretty good...

I went there with a friend for the lunch set, the 60 kuais 2-course-meal and a 40-kuai-glass of wine each.

At first when you see the plate with food you think it's a pretty small portion, but for a woman, I think it's more than enough. I left the place feeling way too full!

But as a brazilian, I have to say that there's really nothing brazilian about the food there.

But as a whole, I think the food and service were good in Alameda. The staff were very friendly and the food cooked very nicely!

Still wonder what people like about this place. Can't be the misguided fusion food. Maybe don't know better

And: this has not been the first true Western restaurant to Beijing and I only hope it won't be the last

Almeda is real good.

Yes I think so .
The breads are always fresh at Almeda. The food arrives promptly. The waitstaff know their job.
The food generally is good.I prefer lunch here as at 60 rmb its quite a deal.
I love the the sunlight in the lunch time and catch the table which has some sunlight.
Lunch time is a treat here.

Great Location - Food to Match

Recently renovated but has not lost its touch, It’s small and has a lot of hard surfaces so it’s a bit noisy. Not a place for a quiet romantic meal but the space is very comfortable. It is ideal for a quick business lunch or a dinner with colleges.

The menu is well priced ; the food cooked perfectly every time and the Chef has managed to blend a mix of flavours that come through in the dishes, Great style and well presented. Staff are at tentative, friendly and above all SMILE

went out to alameda this past weekend and had the 158rmb set menu. had the scallops & filet mignon, which were both tasty. the filet mignon plating itself could be improved as it was served with a mint taro mash. So basically you're looking at brown & grey. Although a tad pricey, it's more of a place to go for a treat!

Where is the love?

Alameda was the first real foreign restaurant in Beijing. And whilst some people complain about the place I can't find a fault with it. I have been for lunch umpteen times, great value and great food. This place started it and the fact that it is still around making good food is a testimony to how delicious the food is. Only been for dinner once and the menu is similar to lunch just a lot more expensive. Love the herb bread they serve too and the service is quite good. Best Lunch in Beijing.

Bad Atmosphere, too bloody noisy!

Sort it out guys! We were there on Friday night, first time after its 'renovation'. Nothing has changed for starters really, maybe an extra mirror and a fresh coat of paint but thats it. We were still taken to the horrible room at the side, which was so bad acoustically, I had to shout to my girlfriend sitting on the other side of the table! It was too LOUD. People who had booked a table came in, saw it was gloomy and too loud and went to sit with the smokers.
However, if you are a smoker, you get to sit in the nicer conservatory area, next time I think I will sit there. Much more pleasant, no-one shouting to hear each other.
Food was great though, can't fault it.
But as for experience, very poor - why didnt they actually change something during the months long renovation! Sort it out!

Unjustifiably expensive

I went to Alameda hoping that the reviewers below had got it wrong, only to be disappointed.

It's a fixed menu (two courses for RMB158), so as a vegetarian you have little choice - two starters and just one main. I went for the mushroom tortilla with watercress (tiny and never worth RMB88 which is apparently the individual price of starters) but undeniably delicious. Then I had the lentil and summer squash risotto. There was a lot there, but unfortunately it was barely cooked through - a few seconds less and I would have been unable to eat it - and had none of the glorious creamy consistency which risotto should. Great flavour, but very badly executed, and I wish I had sent it back. The starters came fast, but we waited too long for the main course while people who arrived after us were served first.

My friend, however, really enjoyed her meal, and that's why I gave it two stars. Tuna with pumpkin linguine and caviar to start was perfectly done, and the seafood gratin had her virtually scraping the glaze off the plate.

There are comment cards on the table (the only other place I've seen these is at Element Fresh, also a place with dubious reviews here...) so I just hope they are taking notice.

With a bottle of their cheapest wine, a meal for two without dessert came to RMB514. My friend will be going with someone else next time.

This place has clearly lost its passion

Just got back from dinner there with my wife. Rmb 158 two course menu with a wide selection of choices. The scallop appetizer was tasty, but the seared lemon tuna was bland and poorly done. Tasted like it was pre-made awhile ago rather than cooked to order. I had the filet mignon while my wife had the grilled sirloin. My steak was rather tasteless and I was quite upset with the vanilla potato side. Clearly the sliced potatoes had been pre-made and somebody just heated it up. The bits on the outside was tough and inedible. Needed ketchup just get it down. The filet mignon was even worse. Rubbery and definitely not medium.

I'll never go back there again. My first visit was 4 years ago for lunch which was quite a pleasant experience. Since then, each visit has been steadily worse. Clearly the kitchen staff have lost the passion for food. The only good thing I have to say is that the service staff is still pretty good. At least the restaurant has managed to retain them, though I'd be ashamed for such terrible food.

overpriced, food average

Don't know what people find so special about this place and how it can get an award...may be just trendy to go there, may be since there are not many good erstaurants general level of expectation going down

Almeda -Nice place for lunch

The rmb 60 lunch is still on my agenda whenever I am that side of the town.

The sunlight there makes one feel bright.

The breads arrive which are fresh.

If you are there at 1130 or 12 you are best served when the waiters are fresh and the cook has energy.

After 1pm, expect the waiters to be sloppy ,the food comes late or is not the best taste.

So to catch the best food, be there early.

Good for ladies , the portions not enough !

With the portions so poor, this place though was so popular for the Business Lunch (there was this lady who always used to be around ) .

There are the chinese waiters who always have problem listening to American English .

Worst is you have to eat all the bread ! and more bread to fill your stomach with the meat portions so less.

The food these days is more on the bland side. Not that flavourful.

Once it was my favourite restaurant

Enjoyable Lunch.

I really enjoyed the set menu lunch here.
There was plenty of options to choose from and after choosing a salad and a salmon dish I was pretty happy.
For 68RMB I think the portions were about right, and although I didn't leave feeling overfull, I was very satisfied.
Best to make a booking for this set lunch as you might not get a table as a walk in.
