Greasy Goodness
When you need your fix for greasy American food, look no further. This is the place to go. Tired of eating rice, noodles and dumplings everyday, then come one come all. Be American. Who else eats steak for breakfast?

Better than Grandma's kitchen
This was one of the first western breakfast places to open up in Beijing. No where near as popular as it once was but does serve up decent western breakfast. Steak and eggs is the first thing on the menu and actually a pretty good choice. The menu on the whole is not that inspired but the generous portions and friendly service make it a great place to grab breakfast AT ANYTIME OF THE DAY!!!
The chocolate milkshake is really good, and they will make it to order. I ask for it extra thick, they happily oblige and it is basically like Ice cream and chocolate syrup blended together! YUM!
Grandma's kitchen is not as good as S&E !!

Late-night dining and delivery convenience
This restaurant has saved my life many a time when it's too late to get food anywhere else aside from a smoky bar or a 7-11. They serve breakfast all day, and I can get a tomato-cheese omelet with toast and hash browns for about 35 kuai. Sweet! They also do late-night delivery; yet another plus.
The food isn't fancy, but it is good diner-style food, with large servings, and the prices are all extremely fair. The menu is huge, and I've always found the service to be pleasant, with the staff making an effort to know the regulars.
There are even some healthy choices to be had. I love the large Greek salad which, although questionably Greek in nature, is huge and has generous amounts of cheese and olives for 50 RMB.
I'm of two minds about the redecoration at the Silk Street branch of Steak & Eggs, but I was pleasantly surprised that the prices had not changed along with the decor. Although I miss the slightly-past-its-prime look of the place before the revamp, I must say that the booths in the new place are quite comfortable, and the new look definitely puts it on par with other family-style restaurants.

A good weekend hangout
Steak & Eggs is a really pleasant neighborhood hangout. My friends and I have been there many times for lunch and have really enjoyed it. The best items on the menu are the hamburgers and sandwiches. The prices were moderate. Unfortunately their salads are less impressive & mediocre. All in all a great restaurant!

What gives?
It's hard to fathom the broad constituency for these restaurants. Is it just an exercise in self-deception, a symptom of the expat blues? Are patrons of Steak and Eggs pining for the greasy diner of Hollywood lore (e.g. Seinfeld) that are actually dying out in North America because people there have realized they have tastebuds? Seriously, who pays more than 50 kuai for an airline-quality western omelet with limp homefries and a watery cup of coffee?
Surely people don't come here for the service, right? On what turned out to be his last visit, a friend was berated by the owner's wife for asking that his bloody steak, which he'd ordered well done, be cooked more. Said she, huffily, "you look pale, you need more blood in your diet." As for the boss, ever noticed how uncomfortable he is around patrons? He once catered a birthday party I attended and the kids were afraid of him. Maybe it was because, in full view of all the guests, he screamed at one of his hapless employees who was reheating mystery-meat burgers. Happy Birthday.
And the atmosphere? Please.
Don't we have countless better food choices in Beijing -- even in the 'Merican category?

Serious comfort food
I should preface this by saying I have simple tastes when it comes to food. I know what I like and I like what what I know. I am not a longterm Beijing resident, neither am I someone who typically has a problem with the local food.
Caveats out of the way, My experience with this spot has been fantastic and impoved with delivery to my room tonight. I ordered the Chicken Cordon Bleu both times, the first time after telephoning close to midnight to see if they were still open (I was informed they would wait for me to show up, when I did the full menu including pizza, if that means anything, was available) resulted in a good old fashioned feed. I ordered mashed potatoes and home fries, and a beer while I waited, which wasn't long. For home delivery I got double homefries. Mmmm.
Tonight, I went for round two. No regrets whatsoever. The food was delivered hot with condiments and the appropriate weapons for hotel room consumption.
I have no idea what the name of the lady who takes the calls and orders is, but she is a diamond. Made me feel very welcome in person and when taking the delivery call.
In sum, if you are looking for a good western style feed in Beijing without frills, hoe into it. Please read the caveats. I am neither a gourmand nor a native, and I had the same thing twice. I was craving a decent portion of what I would call soul food, with good service. It ticked all my boxes, the spot was hit!
If we're talking Metal Hammer, five fists!

good breakfast
Best (cheap) breakfast!
And it's perfect for a hangover =)
I suggest going later in the afternoon (breakfast served all day!) to avoid the crowd.
But the service is so quick and friendly and they have yet to mess up my order. And, they are great about refilling your coffee cup which is a major plus in my book!
try their biscuit+gravy on weekend.

Someone close this place down
This joint, that once was so hallowed for its breakfasts, is nothing but abominable. Its service sucks, its food is inedible, and its head waitress Pauls wife a very rude cookie indeed.
Its a pity people should still give these huxters money.
Dow with pauls steak and egg, and up with the new places getting it right!

Great for what it is: A breakfast place
I give Steak & Eggs a hearty 3 stars for its breakfasts, which I find filling, reasonable and homey. There's something charming about its atmosphere, very diner like. Not a big fan of it as a dinner spot, but hey you can't win 'em all.

Really really terrible
Ok, I know Steak and Eggs has been around for a while, and there are probably a lot of comments about how bad it is already. However, I went there once 4 years ago just to have a cake, it wasn't good. I went back again recently just to give it another try, and I was really surprised about how terrible the food was. On their wall, there are all of these newspaper articles about how it feels just like home and blah blah blah... but actually this restaurant in every way is the equivalence of Chengdu Xiaochi (the really shitty Sichuan chain restaurant). The food is terrible, the environment is messy, dirty and smoky, and the waiter,I mean, he might be a nice person and all, but just really weird.
I hope thebeijinger takes it off its recommended restaurants list, and stop misguiding people.
I give it 0 star, but it wouldn't let me choose nothing, so I had to select at least one, but I actually wanted to choose 0

Steak and Eggs.
I used to go there quite often but stopped several months ago cause the staff there was not very friendly and they made a fuss when I asked for a fapiao. They ended up taking my business card and said they would mail it to me and I have yet to receive it!

An American Diner!
Wish I could give it 2.5 stars
Atmosphere is like a college campus diner, not one off campus that is really popular but one on campus that is a little off and not very busy.
Service is good, they speak english, and the menu is well thought out. It is a little difficult for Chinese to understand as you select an Entree and get several sides with it that changes depending on what you ordered but it is just a new experience for them.
The food was ok but in my mind a little disappointing with strong competition in that area and that market.
