CD Blues Cafe and Bar

In its latest incarnation, this venue is still “CD” (“Central District,” disappointingly), though live blues now howls from the corner stage where jazz players previously soloed. Rare among Beijing’s music venues, the loungey, sit-down format allows you to drift in and out of the performances. The size is just right, though the decor feels dated – a moodier vibe, with a spotlight on the stage, would help. Drinks are serviceable, with beers from RMB 15 and cocktails from RMB 35 – try the CD Blues, a devastating mix featuring gin, vodka, tequila, rum and Blue Curacao. Musically, manager Zhang Ling (or “Big John”) has the right credentials. As Rhythm Dogs’ bassist, Zhang helped pioneer Beijing’s fragile blues scene. On opening night, Zhang’s passion was tangible. The question is whether there are enough like him to support a dedicated blues club. Hopefully there are – if Beijing is intent on selling its soul down at the crossroads, we could use the appropriate soundtrack.

Favorite spot in Beijing

My favorite food happens to be Italian, so having "Annie's" next door (somewhat pricy) and deliver for free is a huge plus.

[EDIT]: If you want to pick the right times to come here:
1) Towards the beginning of happy hour this place is wide open and just barely getting it's customers coming in.
2) This place just about fills every night when the live musicians are in the house, about to go up on stage and more people arrive throughout the performances.

So if you want to come for a quiet drink, snack and/or meal, come before happy, or at the beginning and you'll get great prices with privacy! If you want a lively experience with a group of friends, come around 8pm->til late, this place always has a fun crowd filled with foreigners, students and local Chinese of every age group!

- Only two beers on tap/draft, Tiger and Carlsberg; they are still good beers though.
+ The setting is great, they have good lighting throughout the establishment and control the brightness of each light with the turn of a nob so if you sit down somewhere and it's too bright for you, they turn it down to a comfortable setting. At night they usually light a candle at your table instead of having your light on to set a very calm mood which combines with their live blues and jazz music to make a great experience.
+ The happy hour prices are great, usual alcohol costs but in a very comfortable setting.
+ The service is very good, the bar help gives you space and doesn't jump down your throat like usual bars that just see you as a walking wallet; they only approach you when you first enter, or if you look like you need something.
+ The seating available is perfect. You can sit in front of the stage at typical round tables, a longer 10 person table, up near the entrance at a lower counter style area that is long enough for 6 people or behind that at a raised counter table that seats about 14 people. There's an area on the opposite side from the entrance (still with view of the stage) that has comfortable sofa couches and chairs with round tables. Towards the bar there are more raised counter tops, about three rows of them that seat 4 or 5 each. The case in point here is that there is every option depending on your party size or what you feel would be comfortable all with easy access to go to the bathroom or bar and still see the stage from every area.

There are little complaints about specific situations that have happened, but this isn't a review of morality and intelligence, it's a review of whether you the reader can enjoy yourself here on an average night out. As posted below me, complaining about fighting with the manager is a personal problem between two parties, not a flaw in the establishment.

rarely too crowded with decent music and drinks

I gave a review of this place last year, where I was not amazed but not too disappointed neither.

I went there tonight to have a quiet night with some friends and see what the Sunday set was like. The music was fun, a good mix of songs and not too loud or too quiet.

However as often happens in bars in China we had problems with the management.

We arrived at 8.45 and decided to take advantage of the happy hour that lasts till 9pm, so after ordering our first drinks we ordered a couple more drinks at 5-10 minutes before 9 and assumed that the drinks would be put under the happy hour price. 3 hours later we got the bill for almost 700rmb. We had had a long pleasant evening and had ordered a lot of drinks, so we were annoyed that we hadn't been charged happy hour price for some of the drinks. After talking to the waiter, the shift manager and finally the owner we were thoroughly annoyed that they kept insisting that the order had been put into the computer at 9.02 and therefore we could not qualify for the happy hour.

When you run a bar (especially one thats quite empty on a Sunday night) i feel its not too much to ask to get some decent service. We all know that any manager worth his salt in the west would have focused on happy customers putting down a decent chunk of change on a sunday and taken off 100rmb from the bill, sadly not in China.

Thankfully there are other good live music venues in Beijing, so hopefully for the those still frequenting CD Jazz after this, the management will get with the program of decent service.

If your looking for a place thats not too crowded, where you can go with a group of friends and relax to the live music this place is worth the visit. The big room means you can sit far enough from the music and chat without having to shout.

Check what are the playing

Unless they pay what interests you , no point listening .Out of 3 times, I am been happy only once on the music front.
Yes the place is spacious. I have been here last year when they just used to play Cds ,and not live music.
Now looks someone has taken charge of the place to turn for better. Drinks and service is nothing to complain about.

The quality of the jazz and blues music at CD Blues was wonderful--I arrived earlier in the evening and was able to see how quickly the place filled up as the band members arrived, and the wait for the live music was worth it! It got crowded, but the people that came were all really enthusiastic and friendly; the atmosphere was so relaxed and enjoyable. There was also the opportunity to watch some amazing swing dancing and even join in a little bit, which made the evening a great deal of fun. If you're looking for an evening to enjoy some blues and jazz music in a relaxed and fun atmosphere, I would definitely recommend CD Blues!

I'm a blues and jazz junkie. Every night there is music here. Wednesday is open mic jam night and every last Sunday (I think it is) they have the Beijing Jazz Symphony Orchestra. A huge dozen or so piece orchestra that makes you want to get up and swing. Big John is a fantastic guy, killer bassist and a voice to match. The Blues have struck Beijing and they are warmly invited. As I am a college student, I like to get drunk before I come because I don't have any money. But, most college students aren't into this type of scene so I'm sure you can afford the drinks. Dress to impress is classy but not required. Feel free to chat up John at any time, he's really fantastic, and is easily identifiable by his hats. Alright! I'll see you there!
