Capital M

It took seven years for Melbourne-born restaurateur Michelle Garnaut (owner and founder of M on the Fringe in Hong Kong and Shanghai’s M on the Bund) to make Capital M a reality. The results appear to have been well worth the effort. The terrace affords one of the most impressive views in the city, while the ornate dining room, with its signature parquet flooring and elegant lighting, is a suitably opulent setting for European culinary indulgence. A range of fine wines and classic cocktails are on offer at the bar, and small dishes, canapés and desserts are served in the Oval Room to the left of the bar from 5pm-midnight. Lunch, featuring smorrebrod (Danish open-faced sandwiches), is served throughout the day until 5pm and afternoon tea is available from 2-5pm. Voted "Best Afternoon Tea," "Best High End Brunch," "Outstanding Decor," "Outstanding for a Romantic Meal," "Outstanding for Impressing Visitors" and "Outstanding Restaurant of the Year (non-Chinese)" in the Beijinger's 2011 Reader Restaurant Awards.

Nice place

I tried the brunch.
The food is pretty good , especially the dessert. But the raviolis was not really good.
Decoration is really nice, the service is good too.
I spend a good time, but I think it's too expensive, maybe it's the location...

I don't think I will come back before I earn a lot of money... except maybe for the afternoon tea

Perfect for tea lovers

Had the pleasure of enjoying afternoon tea at Capital M one Saturday, where the overall experience in my opinion more than stands up to the infinitely more revered and expensive institutions around the world. The views out across the square are simply fabulous, though sadly a little obscured if you are dining inside by a large safety barrier on the other side of the window which seems a very bad design fault.

Great selection of tea from English breakfast through to some more exotic flavours, though not so extensive as to be baffling. The sandwiches are standard fayre, but the cakes and scones are worth the price alone. I don't usually have a sweet tooth but after polishing off the food, I was compelled to order an extra portion of scones. That are simply that good, and the clotted cream is the real deal, absolutely delicious.

At around 250 RMB for the afternoon tea, plus an extra serving of scones and a second pot, this is a bargain considering the quality and the location

Service is excellent, can't really fault anything about the experience!

A shame !

We went there based on all the good reviews we saw on this site and others. I invited 2 friends to join us on sunday brunch.
It was AWFULL.
I'll try to be spefic so that potential clients know exactly what to expect...
- we booked a table but had to wait 10 minutes anyway. Well, that's not the worst !
- my first entrée, ricotta pancakes, was literally not edible. Terrible taste, and I'm french so it's not the cheese. I thought a menu at price would not have bad surprises : well, that was just the beginning.
- second entrée was mushrooms on toast, not bad but really weird crème fraîche in the middle with dry roquette, and I've eaten much better mushrooms in Dali or other places.
- main dish was not edible ether...! I chose a steak and was expecting a nice piece of beef : I got a thin piece of "meat" that had obviously been tenderised (!!!), no texture, no taste, disgustingly falling appart by itself. I left it all in the plate.
Prosecco and coffee were fine... well !
We paid 288rmb each for that.

It urgent to put Capital M back were it belongs : it's a fake overpriced pretentious place that serves you sh*t in a golden package.

Great for a posh afternoon tea...

Had a lovely afternoon tea here, out on the terrace/balcony thing, with first-class views out over Qianmen and beyond. Very attentive service and waiters, and the cakes and scones were divine! Two minor, minor gripes that wipe off a star, a slightly odd sandwich-filling combination, and chipped crockery. Overall, wonderful for a luxurious afternoon-tea treat ;)

The guy below must be an idiot!

Who serves red wine chilled or cold ? Where are you from ? That is not a Beijing thing, that is anyone who enjoys "good" wine thing. Obviously you do not drink wine often... HAHAHA really this place is one of the good restaurants worth trying!

One of the best

I took my girlfriend to Capital M for her birthday and it was a success. The decor and ambiance is very good and so is the service. It is nice to have them fetch a taxi for you.
I had the duck legs as the main course. It was excellent. My girlfriend had the fish and she found it oily and did not finish it.
Only 2 small things keep me from giving them 5 stars. As with most restaurants in Beijing, I don't understand why they serve red wine warm, or at room temperature. I asked them to put the bottle in an ice bucket for a while. Second, the waiter, who appeared to be new drop some wine on the table but after I tasted the winde he filled my glass instead of the lady's. A small faux-pas.
Definitely one of the best in town.

Lovely brunch

We loved the M's brunch.
Starting with the vienoiserie, also the bloody mary was perfect (a bit too spicy).
My favourite the benedict eggs and the and meat assortment.
Waiting to go back for summer.... gorgeous outdoor seating.
Only thing..... i will prefer to have new menu every 2 to 3 months. Not specials.

M for Must eat here... again and again!

Visited Sunday 13 Feb 2011 with some friends. This was my first visit so I had high hopes after reading the mostly rave reviews of this five star joint. Finding it is not hard, but not easy either. That said it has nice clear temporary signs pointing to the side door, and once inside the efficient staff took over.

I won't beat around the bush in summing this place up, great service, great food, great ambiance, great facillities, great great great... and yes if you eat a lot and drink a lot you will get a great big bill as well. But the realitively high price, in Beijing terms, is justified. I had lamb, friends had shrimps and lamb. All dishes were perfect, breads freshly baked, and petit fours (complimentary at the end) were also hand made and delicious. A large wine list, nicely made cocktails, warm gas fires and a fab night time view.

It's easy to see why most people love this place, on my list for "M"ust go again soon.

Not overpriced

It's not cheap but it's for sure not overpriced for the quality you get. Nice decor, good service, nice chice of food. Not surer how you can end up with 800 pp

a little overpriced

Personally love all the M stores, that being said, the Beijing store lags behind in price vs quality. I won't comment on location (making it a possibility only when friends are in town), but the details of the decor lacked quality and, seriously, I thought the bill (800 pp including a medium priced bottle of wine) just didn't feel right...some of the food just was not worth it, anyway, still my choice around Tian An Men. Hope they improve the menu.

For sure one of the best choices for European food in beijing. Service also very good as is the decor. Fine integration of the bar in order to start and finish your dinner. I did not find the plates too small but maybe he changed this recently.

A must go in my eyes

My finest experience in Beijing for dining

I've been here a while now and just recently came to The Beijinger, tons of great information here. One of my most memorable experiences in a restaurant since I arrived has been Capitol M. Somebody has done their homework and have created a masterpiece of not only facility and food, but the overall feel of the service as well. Now it was not the cheapest venture I have seen here, but we were not going for cheap. Capitol M delivered a flawless experience from start to finish. It was snowing outside so the place was not really busy, but I did notice several families enjoying the calm atmosphere and impeccable food and service. I would have thought more or less a mostly couples and business type of clientele. Not the case. From the moment we walked off the elevator the high level of attentive service began, our server had above average english skills and the maitre' d was in close proximity to aid his teammember and insure a successful visit. The room was adorned with beautiful murals and tasteful artworks, lights and music all becoming a worldclass Michelin restaurant. After being served our meals, we struck up a conversation with the maitre' d. I told him how impressed I was with their presentations of both food and service. He asked how could he make it more impressive and I asked to see the kitchen. Equally stunning. A piece of mechanical artwork. I got to meet the chef and dowded upon him how much I enjoyed the food.

Capitol M is a fine example of the methodology of how great restaurants do it. By all means Go there!

Great service, good food, best view.

The portions for the price are small and more than anything its inconvenience of ordering for the second dish of the main course and waiting!
My main course dish was just not enough for a man like me.Need 2 main dishes for capital M size main course dish and I am just a decent eater, not a big eater.

Otherwise I like this place.

M Diary

With my strong love for the beautiful design of Capital M. I was immediately drew there when I learned that they recently released their 2011 M Diary.

It's RMB 190 and indeed very beautiful. Cover is in light blue with silver dragon pattern, the content is divided to 12 sections with 12 special seasonable designs in front each section - pulled out card of the view at Capital M; CDs of their band; interesting article of chopsticks with illustration of a bunch of folk and knife compared to one pair of chopsticks; a little girl's letter about anti-shark-killing and a cage of three fish-shaped cards with names of fish kinds we shouldn't/moderate/can eat.

With a diary like this in hands, I really hope that 2010 is over soon, not only because it hasn't been the greatest year for me. My two friends also agreed it's a very beautiful diary and they will keep it like the way it is. But to me, it will be more interesting to have it written fully. Just imagine if I have one little thing, thought or idea in a day worth mentioning. It means that day I really lived. It could be really random thoughts or things that worth remembering, but no complain or regrets! Then if the whole year of 2011 is full of days like that, how wonderful that year will be?

Delicious food and a great terrace

A very nice view from the terrace on Tian'anmen Square. The terrace is rather small, which results in a very comfortable atmosphere.

The food is very good. On saturday night, they had this offer for a glass of white wine and oysters for 10 RMB, which leaves you wondering why it's not simply free at that price =)

I ordered the vitello tonato as a starter, which was very delicious. As a main course, I had a vegetarian Moroccan dish with an eggplant pie and couscous, also close to perfect.

They have a nice, not overwhelming wine list with reasonably priced open wines if you don't want to go for a bottle.

For the dessert, I went for a lemon tart, which was only average. After reading about the Pavlova in all the reviews here, I think that's what you should order the first time. One small detail I disliked was that they brought me the espresso way before the dessert.

I can wholeheartedly recommend the Capital M, and I will definitely go there again.

A wonderful evening

Went to Capital M on Saturday night and sat on the deck, at least until it started to rain about 15 minutes later. This spot will be unrivaled in September and October when autumn arrives. Even after we moved inside, it was also very pleasant.

Service was very attentive. The mezze platter was excellent and just the right size, although the amount of pita provided was far too little -- we supplemented with the basket of bread.

I had the slow-cooked pork, which was familiar from M on the Bund in Shanghai, and it was fantastic. Portion size here is slightly larger than that of Maison Boulud, although food quality is slightly lower, although still excellent. The salmon was also properly cooked and full of flavor.

For dessert, the Pavlova is superb -- creamy, fruity, ever so slightly crispy, very enjoyable.

If I would change anything here, I would impose a dress code. The restaurant is not inexpensive -- for these numbers, I do not want to sit next to some douchebag in shorts and a baseball cap. Hey douche -- the world's largest KFC is right around the corner, go there.

There were not many people here for a Saturday. Despite coverage in The New York Times and other publications, the restaurant is not so easy to find. They need some kind of regular drinking event to make full use of their expansive deck -- again, this will be a fantastic place for Beijing on September and October evenings.

I am looking forward to my next visit.

The dessert platter is to die for

If I could break all the rules about fine dining, I'd most certainly ask for my dessert to be served ahead of all the other courses. Or I'd order desserts only for the whole evening. Every time we go to Capital M, I anticipate my dessert platter. The pavlova is their signature dessert which I enjoy a lot. But even more tempting is their home made ice cream. I had the mango and coconut flavors the last time and they were just awesome! My other favorites are their chocolate cake and creme brulee. The platter is meant for two persons but it almost always ends up on my side of the table because boyfriend is too nice and enjoys seeing me smiling while I eat my desserts.

The M brand is flourishing in China.
Everything they put their name to has a sense of class, value, and most importantly integrity.

Hugely recommend taking a trip down there on a clear-ish day to enjoy the terrace and views over Tiananmen Sq.

Also, have to try the pavlova for dessert. All class.

Such a great place

I had a very pleasant experience at Capital M few months ago.

Normally managers will ignore customer's complain, they try so hard to find different excuses not to say Sorry and not do anything about their mistake. But, Capital M has the best service.

The chef made a mistake, well, we were human being, everyone makes mistake, but I thought this place is such a nice place, for their own good, I should tell the manager. I didn't expect anything from them, but after I told the manager, he gave me the best answer ever!

I was very happy, not only nice food, but also great service. I will go back there more often!
