Love the Brunch on the Weekend

Review of Chef Too

My parents and I usually meet on Sundays for brunch and our usual go to place is Chef Too. I, being a creature of habit, used to order the same thing, the smothered tex-mex omlette. But I have been straying away here lately, the burger is amazing, I love the cobb salad with fresh avacado, chunks of bleu cheese and very nearly a slab of crispy bacon scattered about it is a meal on its own. And finally the Eggs Sardou with poached eggs over artichoke hearts, I usually get mine with roasted potatoes and buttered veggies. When visitors come to town this is a must stop comfort food place to get a nice western meal and well above board service.

The Best Possible Kind of 'Nice'

I hesitate to use the word 'nice' these days without some kind of added negative connotation, or a modifier - "it's...nice..." or "she's very nice", but this place is just 'nice'. It's not the most spectacular meal you'll get, but it's quality, it's tasty and it's comfortable. Three things that Beijing eateries so frequently fail on. Decent service, too. You do end up paying a little more, but not a whole lot more - it's not somewhere I'd go every week, but once a month or so is definitely affordable on most expat salaries.

Do call ahead and make a booking, they're very small and fill up very fast, especially for brunch. Will be back to try their burgers and steaks.

Great burger, great service

Went to Chef Too's last week with a friend visiting from out-of-town. Here's my breakdown:

Food: Great. I've yet to try Fatburger but this was the best burger I've had in a long time. Cooked perfectly, onions and mushrooms were solid additions.
Service: Great. Water constantly refilled, all other requests met immediately with a smile.
Atmosphere: Ok. Decor is nothing to write home about, the place is clean and the atmosphere was pleasant (though the location of the washroom is very awkward) and generally feels very generic.

Overall it was a great meal, great experience (without increments of 0.5 I'm staying with 5/5) and based on previous reviews, I'll have to return to try the brunch!

Fair warning: Call Ahead

I've raved about Chef Too for years... its one of my favorite restaurants in town.

So for that, I'd give it 4 stars.

That said, fair warning that a couple of times I've shown up, to find them wrapping up a bit on the early side (by Beijing standards).

Last night marked what may well be my last attempt to give them my business - at least without calling ahead.

Rainy Friday night, but I'm jonesin' for some of Chef Billy's ribs. I head out into the rain in Shuangjing and wait 15 minutes for a cab. Finally get a cab, fight traffic across town to Chaoyang park adjacent to Chef Too. Get out of cab, excitedly stroll over to the restaurant and..........

It's closed.

Well - by closed I mean the OPEN light is off and the door is locked. THere are still a few patrons inside eating. Clearly it wasn't a private party - too few patrons. If I had to guess, I'd say that it was a slow night, it was rainy, and the owner or staff (if Chef Billy wasn't there) decided to call it a night. That said, it was 8:50. Dude... that's still prime dinner hours in Beijing.

So... then I had to jockey - still in the rain - for another cab (which took 15 minutes) to give someone else my business.

Anyhow. Love the food, but I won't bother schlepping across town for it without at least calling to check first. If you're a business respect your customers by respecting your posted business hours.

Excellent Brunch

Went there for brunch with my best friends last week. It was excellent! I love the pancakes.. (5/5 for these) and the sandwich is great too. Good service (and fluent in English). I really recommend this place!

Good steak, good wines, good service

Had steak here recently and from my limited experience with the local fare, Billy has got his stuff together. I got to meet Chef Billy while I was dining, he is a real character. A small and unpretentious spot that features great service, a nice selections of fine wines and an unbelievable single barrel bourbon selection.

I was so impressed with the dinner fare and attention to detail, I just had to try out brunch. How refreshing. The tex mex smothered omelette was amazing, great coffee and the little cinnamon roll when you first come in perfect. The menu also has pancakes, steak and eggs and the standard eggs benedict, which I have had all of these and never been let down.

Make it a point to visit Chef Too, Billy will deliver as usual.

what a sad place!

I honestly dont understand what are people raving about. The place looks old, sad and miserable. I went for dinner on a Friday night and I was very dissapointed. The environment of the restaurant is sad and depressing all the lights are on, no decoration. From the limited wine list (by glass and bottle) 30% is not available (apparently they are changing the wine list...!) The flexibility of the staff is minimal.
The food, with the exception of the actual stake, which was nice - and correctly cooked- and the warm bread rolls, was very average. The Chef's salad was just a green salad with oil and (a lot of) vinegar with a few pieces of shaved apple, 3 nuts and a few pieces of a creamy cheese which tasted like blue cheese but not sure what it was. Very dissapointing.
The potatos that were served with the steak were half raw. When asked the staff to change they changed immediately and served a creamy spinach which was ok.
The sad part of the whole dinner is that there was one more table in the other side of the restaurant and when they left (around 9:20pm), the staff turned off the lights, put the chairs on the tables so they can clean. At 10 pm, and whilst we were finishing our dinner, the music stopped and was never put on again! Basically a clear sign of " we are closing - get out". Overall a big dissapointment!

Amazing Brunch, Excellent Service

I came here on a whim for brunch last Sunday and though the prices seemed a bit high at first once the food came I realized how justified they were. After coming here I realize how easily I have been lulled into accepting sub-par food for brunch. A simple cheese omelette (all eggs come with 2 sides of choice) was huge and cooked light and fluffy. The bacon was perfectly crispy; toast hot and buttered and with additional jam. My boyfriend's eggs benedict came with fat, juicy sausage and tasty homefries. Both plates were equally impressive and tasty.
Service was also some of the best I have had in Beijing. I initially tried ordering pancakes which they didn't have at the moment, and even when I was more than happy to change my order (I realized after ordering that I did want eggs) the waitress brought out a plate with a pancake and syrup for me free of charge. Service was attentive and helpful and I will be more than happy to come back for the great people and delicious breakfasts.

Wonderful family restaurant

The food at Chef Too is really good, some classic American fare mixed in with traditional brunch foods. The restaurant itself is very cute nice position and decor. Good service too. It is wildly popular with families, could be due to the fact that the offer free food for the little ones. Not the best place for an intimate adult brunch but it has great food and a very friendly atmosphere.

Nice

The menu has “bites” and cold cuts from the “butcher block,” three selections of macaroni and cheese, lobster and clam rolls, fried chicken, a burger, slow-roasted meats and fries on the side. You’re served bread and butter pickles when you take a table, as well as corn bread and biscuits that would be excellent if they weren’t so cold

ahh...truly HOME cooking.

Best American breakfast you can find in Beijing. Maybe in China. Menu offers wonderful selection of fantastic brunch dishes...Bottomless coffee, excellent service and free breakfat for kids. make reservations as it's always packed(deservedly so) , especially on Sundays. And it always nice to go where everybody knows your name. And your child's. Believe me, you will go back again and again.

Tip of the Hat

If The Colbert Report were giving restaurant reviews in Beijing, Chef Too would get the Tip of the Hat. Friendly classy service, great menu selection, and outstanding delicious food. Prices are not low but still does not exploit the wallet, you end up satisfied and content. Even the water tastes good. I would stop by more often if I lived closer. Only problem is what to order, so many good things, including the fresh and always tasty soup of the day no matter what it is, the only thing to keep in mind is that the Club Sandwich comes with fries (not mentioned in the menu) I would have ordered it if I had known but went with the burger instead last time.

Great Steak with Competitive Price

If you want to have some good steak but don't want to spend too much money on one dish, you can try this place out.

They were nominated in "Best Burger" category in the last theBeijinger Restaurant Awards and selected as "Outstanding Burger" by readers and their guests.

The service is great. Not like other places, you don't know what kind of free water they serve you, in this place, the waitress will open a new "Nong Fu Shan Quan" bottle in front of you and pour it into your glasses.

And the owner is so nice, every time I go there, he would spend some time and talk to me for a while.

Great little place with a neighborhood feel

Chef Too is a great little place with a charming, neighborhood feel.

The food is lovingly prepared and presented, service is prompt and the dining room has got a little of that bistro feel to it. The staff make great pains to make the place family-friendly (the kids menu was drawn by a kid, there's high chairs available, and the kids items are served promptly -- obviously the work of people who know kids can get antsy!). Its location directly across from the northwest exit of Chaoyang Park make it a great spot to visit after a romp in the park.

The only reason I wouldn't give it an A for family friendliness is the fact that the bathrooms require you to go outside and are quite cramped, which especially in the winter make it difficult for toddlers.

I recommend this restaurant

The food was excellent, the service was attentive and the foods exceeded my expectations as it is in fact at Beijing, China. The prices were on high site.
My only complaint is with the wine list, which is pricey. We were celebrating a special occasion, and let ourselves be talked into a more expensive bottle than we might normally order. It was decent, but it wasn't fabulous. Not worth the extra $$.
I would definitely go again.

Good.

Heard a lot about it, aware that it has gotten lotsa awards but never tried it till yest night.

You must say its really hidden behind a non-spectacular surface..can never imagine you will have a high standard restaurant at this small wooden hut..

Once entered, remind me of the cosy italian/french local restaurant esp when you see its packed with all western people..!

Not much choice of the food, but fine for me, as quantity doesn't mean quality. Though a little surprise to see the high price given the location/the environment/the decor of the restaurant (not 5 star hotel or super fancy decor), but willing to give it a try on the food before I judge.

Served with real hot bread and nongfu mineral water, good first impression. Ordered a wagyu beef burger for myself and santa fe chicken breast for my wife, oh, also a bacon and blue cheese salad.

The Salad - Impressive despite the plain look!!! Must try!!! As I see other table ordered the same dish too!!!

The wagyu beef - Though the meet can be juicier but can't complain when you see the settings and details covered for the dish..overall its good quality.

The chicken breast - Very nice, pretty unique, love the mash potato...

last but not least - NY Cheese Cake - Okay, not bad.

Bill is around 330RMB...well, i think its worth it, at least I didn't expect the food to be at such high quality, I have tried Alameda few times but I am more impress with Chef Too, thats all i can say.

happy new year

I was at Chef too today and the quality of the food was pretty good. I found the prices to be way too high though. The food was not of the quality of Alameda but was comparably pricey. We paid almost RMB900 for four people. Have to say though that the ambiance was very pleasant, the staff were friendly and the service attentive.

Overall, very pleasant but get ready to pay through the nose for it.

Nice resturant and pretty good food

SO I have been reading about this place for a while now and finally decided to give it a go.

No appetizer for me as there was not that much choice (salads and a shrimp cocktail)...but I had the Alaskan crab legs and my husband had the seafood gumbo.

He loved the Gumbo (been to Louisiana and know what gumbo should taste like) and Lots of crab but a bit too salty and was slathered in butter. Don't get me wrong I love some butter on the side, but it was swimming in it.

Wines were good value 42 kuai a glass and the cheesecake was tasty. I though NY cheesecake was like massive (Been to carnagie's deli)not too big but none the less good.

Got the bill and it was 600 kuai, a little more than usual but we did have seafood which is pricey in Beijing. Plus 10% service, which apparently goes to staff- no prob with that.

Might give it a go at a later date, but still was not too happy with those crab legs! Sad
