Drum and Gong Fusion Restaurant 锣鼓洞天

This Nanluogu Xiang spot is regularly packed to capacity on weekends with both locals and tourists alike, thanks to an informative menu designed with icons that flag up dishes that go down well with foreigners and those that are more appealing to Chinese tastes, as well as detailing concerns such as the spiciness of a particular dish or allergy-related information. The affordable food covers a range of familiar Chinese dishes, although there are fusion twists like visitor-friendly cheese-inspired dishes and eggplant cooked in orange sauce.

On a sunny afternoon we sat on the rooftop terrace and tried tofu wrapped vegetables rolls, spiced sauteed string beans with pork, and steamed rice. Have yet to find a steamed rice that tastes fresh and fluffy, but the tofu rolls were pleasant and very healthy and light, and the string beans were almost as health conscious without much sauce/oil. the food overall is decent though not the best, and there are many local joints in hidden Hutongs and alleys that would be better.

Rooftop terrace is hopping this time of year

Was dining here on the roof this past weekend and I've never seen the place (much less all of NLGX) so packed, making the atmosphere fantastic (if you're craving a night of renao).

Food-wise the menu offers some interesting dishes - I like the curry vegetables (forgot the Chinese name, unfortunately), which come with carrots, onions and broccoli in a tasty curry sauce) and the grilled fish (kao yu) - carp, to be exact - is a winner and done quite distinctly with a savory sauce from the usual dry style kaoyu of other restaurants.

The service was proficient, but stressed to the breaking point - they definitely need to hire a few more servers to handle the crowds.

All in all, however, I'll definitely go back - Drum and Gong is a great place to take out of town guests.

splendid carp

my parents recently visited that place and were delighted.
the deep fried sweet&sour carp was delicious.
Furthermore you should try the lamb ('dry fried') with coriander and cumin is highly recommended.

worth to try!

Quite good, but fusion?

I'd long avoided going into this place seeing the crowds and fearing the "fusion" label in the restaurant title would mean it would be pretentious western food with some "Chinese flair". I'm glad we finally tried it out.

This is a cute little crowded place, where you'll be pressed to get a table during peak dinner hours without a reservation. The atmosphere is blessedly nice without the glaring bright lights, and generally friendly but not overly attentive service.

As for the food: it's quite good. I'm not sure where the fusion comes from. Looking at the menu, maybe it' s a fusion of Chinese and Chinese food or something? Sichuan and northern chinese food? The selection reminds one of a cross between a regular Sichuan and Dongbei restaurant, although there's a huge wine list.

Either way, we enjoyed it quite a lot and would go back. The prices were quite Chinese-reasonable, especially for Nanluoguxiang.
