Mmm :)

Those chips are divine!

The more drinks you've had, the better they taste. But that doesn't mean they're bad; they're the perfect accompaniment to a night out.

All that greasy goodness... mmm...

Ask specially for the mayonnaise, "dan huang jiang" 蛋黄酱. The staff are so spectacular that you can tipsily tumble out your words either odd way, like "huang dan jiang" "that huang se de jiang", etc. and they'll smile and know just what you need.

Now that the nights are warm, what better way to greet 2am than by sitting outside with your beer and Fish Nation chips.

Don't forget to dip those chips in the ketchup and the mayo :)

OK chips but tasteless fish

I've been to the the Nanluogu Xiang branch of Fish Nation quite a few times over the years. I keep going back because every six months or so I get a real hankering for fish and chips, and options for this great Western delicacy are limited in Beijing.

Unfortunately, every time I go to Fish Nation I'm reminded just how ordinary non-Chinese food can be in China. The chips are ok, the salads passable, but the fish is frankly pretty bad. The batter is often soggy, the fish tasteless and often tough.

The ambiance of the Nanluogu Xiang branch is quite nice and the service is good. It's just the food that is underwhelming.

Unhygenic ,dirty place

I dont know how english person of a minimum reasonable standards of hygeine would like this place !

I have gone to shooters many a times and prefer to eat the minimum hygenic place at Rickshaw or the lugga.

The Fish nation -is a dirty place (just not clean). The 2 chinese guys cooking dont wear any proper headgear or they themselves do not conduct clean.

I once ordered the fish and chips and was having a beer waiting for it to be done, and didnt feel good at all to be there to eat the food.
Just had a bite of fish , didnt quite like it and gave off the food to the people who beg outside the street and straight went to rickshaw for a my burger as its open 24 hours.

Yep, great chips...

Really, really good chips (coming from an Englishman). The fish can be a bit drab so plump for something else instead (sausages are good). The salads are surprisingly tasty too - give 'em a go. And the big British breakfast is a decent offering, almost on a par with The Vineyard Cafe.

Best Chips, but Average Fish

When we first arrived at Fish Nation – Chip Shop, I have to say we were a little apprehensive. The Fish Nation – Chip Shop is situated in a side alley of Sanlitun that includes popular night spots Butterfly and Shooters. A hole in the wall, with outdoor green benches and chairs and a plain small inside order stand and kitchen with not decorating theme, it feels local rather than British. At 7 PM, we were the only diners there, and what could have been an out of the way, quite spot, was interrupted by the cacophony of sounds of the surrounding restaurants and clubs setting up for the night. Unfortunately at dinner time, one can also smell the nearby garbage cans, which give the Chip Shop a definitive grungy, dive feel.

Then again, the Chip Shop is meant to be experienced late at night after hours of drinking and partying. Opened back in the spring of 2004, the Chip Shop was the first chippery in China. It quickly became a favorite by locals and foreigners alike. It was opened by two Chinese musicians, an artist, two Brits, and a dancer. An interesting combination, but one that proved successful, it filled the void for fish and chips. It soon opened up a mobile kitchen and family restaurant.

Keeping in mind that the place is meant for late night munchies and for take away food, the Fish Nation Chip Shop, is good bang for your buck. There is a good selection of beers, from local Tsing Tao to Corona to European Hoegarden to Abbots Ale. The cocktails, though not made to accuracy or perfection, are cheap and strong. One can get a mohito, gin-tonic, or rum and coke for only 15 RMB, by far beating any of the happy hour specials of the Sanlitun club scene. Plus the cocktails are smartly served in large funky plastic cups for easy take away with minimal spillage, perfect for those still tipsy.

Of course, the best reason to come to Fish Nation – Chip Shop is for the home made chips. They are by far the best chips in Beijing. Piping hot, salty and crunchy, they are large reminders of London. The hand-cut cod fish, hailing from Russia, is also an ample attempt to recreate London fish, but unlike the traditional beer-battered recipe, the fish here tastes slightly dry and bland. The tartar sauce does not resemble tartar sauce at all. It is more a combination of mayo and mustard, and does not compliment the dishes in anyway. The same can be said of the prawns, and the batter is just not on par with the beer-batter recipe used in the UK. On the plus side, considerably less oil and grease is used, and the portions are Western size and large. The food is definitely filling, and for 15-20 RMB you get more than what you paid for.

A pleasant surprise is the Beef sausage and English sausage. The beef sausage consists of Australian meat and is served soft, hot, and moist. The quality meat and the great honey mustard sauce make it a winning combination. However, the English sausage is even better. Generously peppered, the English pork is some of the best sausage in Beijing, and worth a taste. The calamari is also tasty and battered rather than fried and crunchy.
The servers speak very limited English, but are friendly. When we arrived we tried to explain that we wanted to have a few drinks first before ordering, but the staff was pushy for us to order food. They also brought the check before the meal, and we were expected to pay immediately.

By 8:30 PM the street came alive, and was packed with tourists, expats, and locals table hopping between outdoor food stalls. The garbage smell had dissipated, music was blasting from the clubs, and there was a good ambience of social fun. A word of warning, the shop does not have any toilets. One has to go across the street to Shooters and use the squatters.

In conclusion, Fish Nation – Chip Shop is meant for late night fun, and offers the best chips in town. Coupled with generous sizes of fish and sausage, one cannot expect to leave unsatisfied. Offering a cheap alternative to the rest of Sanlitun, this is a place not to miss, and a great pit stop to sober up.
Fish Nation- Chip Shop is open until 4am on weekends and 2am through the week. Fish Nation-Chip Shop is located North of Youth Hostel in Sanlitun. Tel: 8610-6415 0119

Don't waste your money.

Nanluoguxiang

I have to agree with all the other reviews that this place is just not worth it.

If you want fish and chips this is not the place to be. It's expensive for the quality and size you get. The fish was not fresh and the chips were just plain awful.

I took a Chinese friend for their first taste of a British tradition and this is just typical of the Chinese doing a bad example of something they know little about.

The place is nicely kept, clean with a open log fire and good staff (reason for the 2 stars) but the lack of food quality is the main reason not to visit.

Disgusting

Fish Nation is disgusting. Totally soggy and greasy crap. The sausages are just like bags of lard coated in oil soaked paper that they call batter.

The oil they use is the heaviest and nastiest stuff ever. The fish tastes like it's been sitting out for a few days. The place is dirty. It's expensive.

By far,the worst fish and chips in the world.

one of the most suckiest fish and chips ever

the fish and chips is small and soggy and you can tell that it is not fresh at all. salad is not bad but the calamari needs some softener added to it. I overheard the british guy sitting opposite us commenting that the calamari tastes like shoelaces and I can't agree more! the pizza is decent but not worth the price. I will NEVER go back there for fish and chips!

really a poor excuse for fish and chips. the positive reviews here must be fake, written by the owners. fish was bland, chips were chunky and hard.

the beer was fine though. if you think Salt Beijing is innovative, you'll probably love fish and chips.

Terrible

My dead British dad is currently spinning in his grave.

Dry crusty bits of fish and soggy chips does not equal "fish and chips."

Expensive and shoddy.

Only exists because opposite a crappy nightclub.

Plenty of fish

Two favourites, the English breakfest and the set menu fish and chips. Usually never let's down, though a little variety is to be found depending who's in the kitchen.
Both are plenty and delicious.
The salad that comes with the set menu is good, and a large portion.
And the fish and chips in itself, there's enough and it's tasty and not too pricy.

Tasteless fish

I found this place to be expensive for what you get. The fish is ok, just frozen fish fillets and calamari. You have to pay extra for the chips and none of the portions are very large. It hits the spot if you are craving fish and chips but are not that hungry or if you have a huge wallet and dont care. The beer is also expensive. Now they have some American micro brews so the quality has improved, but the prices are more than places nearby.

Fan-tas-tic Fish and Chips!

After hearing so much about this place and my very homesick husbands rants about "fish and chips" thought we'd search for it!

Went to the location in the Hutongs around the bell tower. Its a nice area to roam around.

So the fish and chips are Awesome... there was nothing left after 2 plates full! Don't exactly recall the price, however its not expensive for the massive amount of fish you get properly cooked and prepared.

We sat on the roof terrace and its lovely on a nice day. Had a strongbow english cider and a carlsberg... Nice to have a good beer to wash it all down!

I noticed they have Wifi as people were on laptops, but its nice to look over and people watch from the roof.

Service was pretty good and we could not have been happier.

Saw one in Sanlitun, will give it a go when that craving comes back!
