Golden Jaguar 金钱豹

Defining itself as an “international cuisine collection,” Golden Jaguar is a paradise for buffet lovers - a mecca to gluttony - lose yourself in the enormous selection of dishes from both the Western and Chinese cookery traditions displayed in a seemingly endless succession of cooking stations armed by a veritable army of a waitstaff. The concept may seem dubious (let's face it, buffets in China are often crap), but Golden Jaguar stands out for the sheer variety of dishes and cuisines is reason enough to indulge on everything from sushi, steak, oysters, salads, swallow's nest soup, abalone (and yes, unfortunately, shark's fin soup - albeit of inferior quality), dim sum, steaks, Southeast Asian food, Italian pastas, French cuisine, sushi, sashimi, all-you-can ice cream and more. Lunch is RMB 198, while prices for dinner depend on when you go – from 5-8pm, it’s RMB 238, and down to RMB 198 from 8-10.30pm. Half price for kids under 120cm; those under 70cm eat free.

Quite a Good One

I've been to Golden Jaguar many times, and I like it, especially Oden (关东煮)-- very tasty =P~
However ... too noisy. If you want to date with your lover quitely, you'd better have other choices.

Vegetarian Warning

I heard that this place has a huge selection of apparently decent quality food so I've been wanting to go for a while. Being vegetarian makes buffets a bit of a gamble as you don't know how much of the food you'll be able to eat and how much you'll be the pity of the group, but I have a huge appetite and love buffets so thought I'd try it out anyway.

As it turns out the veggie selection is terrible and about 90% of main courses and 99% of the more interesting or unique food is meaty. If you eat seafood it's probably okay as there's a lot of choice in the japanese section. The cheese selection is rubbish, too, so that doesn't even make up for it.

They do make up for it partially with the free-flowing alcohol (the wine is fairly drinkable) and good dessert selection (tiramisu ice-cream!!). But this is only a part of a good meal.

So, I recommend that VEGETARIANS AVOID THIS PLACE unless you have a large appetite, don't mind eating a lot of the same stuff, will drink a lot and aren't afraid to mount a decent offensive on the dessert table. I am all those things so had a good time - hence the 3 star rating - but wouldn't do it again.

Point of comparison: went to Chengdu's Shangrila buffet for about 120RMB and the selection is miles better, with plenty enough veg stuff:)

Too many choices!

If you only have a bowl of noodles you can enjoy it and feel satisfied but when the choices are too many, you lose your way for the direction. That is the feeling of mine when I got into Galen jaguar. The food is good and the dishes are far more beyond your imagination. The environment is not bad but with the crowd diners, it's too crowded. Don't know others but I am the one who never had strong appetite when having buffet dinners.

Dining is a beauty!

Love it. Who do not? It's full of food. The place is huge. The food is diverse like universe. I am stunned when I first went there. People were lining up to wait for food being cooked. People are calculating what's worth more and what's more healthy and rare. I guess I tried a few things which are from deep sea. One piece can make blood double faster and I had 4 or 5.
You really cannot taste them all because there are too many kinds. When I tried to go to Japanese way, I found that oh, sh*t, I should leave room to try Thailand, then later I hated to not have enough room to try some great American... Dining is a beauty!

sea food, Thai, Japanese, Guangdong, Western, dim sum, desert you can basically find anything in this huge buffet place.not many ice cream choices but things are good in general. There's live performance but suggest to go during lunch time, not only cause it's cheaper than 6-8pm time slot, also you have enough time to digest before go to bed.

Too much and too diverse

People are impressed with this buffet because the have an abundance of expensive foods (albeit not the best quality ones). But come on there is too much to make it enjoyable there is Japanese, Indian, Thai, Italian, French, Greek, Chinese etc, then there is a plethora of ice cream and other deserts. It was hard to chose what to eat, so inevitably took a little of everything that seemed good, ended up eating too much and feeling awful afterward. The food is not top quality but it is more than edible, drinks are total crap!

There is just too much going on food wise and its is quite noisy, all in all not somewhere you'd go for a meal. Might be good for weddings or large parties like that but I'd avoid it. There are much better dinning experiences in Beijing.

A veritable feast!

If you are hungry enough to eat an elephant, then the Golden Jaguar is the place for you! Not only do they have enough food to build an elephant, they probably have elephant somewhere around there as well. The food is not only plentiful here, but the quality is supreme. This is one case where the quantity and quality are truly equal. After you stuff yourself with food from Thailand, Korea, Japan, and China, you can head over to the dessert bar where there are desserts from around the world such as tres leches cake, rice balls, puddings, fruit, and much much more. A word of warning for visiting the Golden Jaguar... wear stretchy pants. The ride home will be so much more comfortable.

The "Best Buffet"

While I may not have the extensive experience of the last reviewer when it comes to buffets, I've had my share in the US. Buffets there are usually not so grand, so I was blown away by the selection at the Golden Jaguar. The sushi/sashami was missing my favorite california and dragon rolls, but there was quite a selection of other rolls. The Indian food was good, as well as the Thai. But my favorite was the endless supply of slushies just waiting to be pulled from the machine. Also, there is a stage in the middle of the joint that features live music. From the music to the decor to the food, it was quite a show.

Golden Jaguar at The Place: Big on Variety, Uneven on Quality

Had a family lunch there this past weekend and while the place definitely impresses in its sheer size and scale, it doesn't quite match up to other branches I've tried in Shanghai (which were excellent, I might add).

On the positive side, the sashimi at this branch is quite good - they have an excellent and fresh selection of salmon, tuna, mackerel, octopus and other standards. They also do Cantonese style dim sum well (the durian puffs are exquisite, as are the various baozi, especially the one with crab meat). The raw oysters in the Southeast Asian section were gone in a matter of minutes.

There is a sizeable selection of Taiwanese style dishes (seafood and such), which most diners seem to ignore (like all branches, they queue up for the abalone, swallow's nest and, unfortunately, the shark's fin soup). Desserts are also decent - with a nice range of cheesecakes, fresh fruit juices and good ice cream; and they even do cocktails (with minimal alcohol, of course), serve decent draft beer (yanjing and budweiser) and god-awful domestic wines by the glass - all splayed out for the grabbing.

However this branch falls well short in the international food category (as compared to the Shanghai branches, which were surprisingly good in this area), with terrible renditions of mushroom soup, spaghetti bolognese and steaks (all prepared way too overcooked for my taste, with no option of getting it medium rare).

The decor is classic Chinese nouveau-riche - heavy on the red carpets, crystals and glass, but the layout is quite awkward - the interior is essentially a long, winding labyrinth and getting from station to station during weekend lunchtimes is like being in the subway at rush hour.

Service is efficient, but they get two thumbs down for trying to hawk RMB 3,000-5,000 membership cards (worth it only if you have an endless string of clients to impress) twice during our meal, as well as the rude hostesses at the door who harangued us to see our bill as we left, although no warning was given by the wait staff (who very perfunctly asked us to pay just 20 minutes into our meal) that we would have to show it upon leaving.
