In and Out 一坐一忘

Staffed by various ethnic minorities of Yunnan decked out in their traditional costumes, this airy three-floor Lijiang-themed restaurant is popular with locals and Sanlitun embassy-area foreigners alike. The seasonally rotating menu boasts Dai favorites such as fried potato balls and rice with pineapple, along with a mish-mash of Naxi, Bai, and Wa minority staples including Xishuangbanna roast fish bundled with lemongrass, and rich, leathery Shangri-La dried beef. Voted "Outstanding Yunnan" in the Beijinger's 2011 Restaurant Awards.

Love This Place

The food was wonderful, service was attentive. Attentive service may have been due to our being in a private dining room. Ethnic costumes on the wait staff is a real crowd-pleaser.

Good Yunnan food, reasonable prices

I've been to this place several times and feel it's a great place to go. Their menu isn't the greatest (doesn't compare to 中八楼) but their tilapia fish is really good. Dishes are medium sized. When they say shredded meat, they mean shredded. I prefer it if I have to chew my meat so I try to avoid the dishes with shredded meat.

There's no smoking downstairs and since May 1, I'm guessing you can't smoke in the private rooms upstairs either.

I'd recommend reservations in the evening, especially on Friday or Saturday. I think the last booking for reservations is 6:30pm so that may be difficult for a lot of people. I prefer to make the 6:30 booking and just arrive around 7 or so.

If you've never been before, it may be difficult for your taxi driver to locate place. If you're going by subway, it's about a 20min walk from the 农业展览馆 station.

Great place to go with friends and I recommend their rice wine as well.

EXTREMELY DISSATISFIED WITH SERVICE. Food was good. ALL I can remember however is the service.

I do sincerely hope the management of In & Out could change their service attitude and level. I have posted this review to highlight to them that they need to do something about "not lying" to customers in order to bring in business.

To be fair the food was good (3.5 stars). However all that I can remember is the horrible experience I got.
If I could given a lower star rating than 1 star if I could have.

Important Note: I was rushing home so that I could get back in time to accompany my wife to send her mother off to the train station for a train that was leaving that same night.

nice place

The service is ok.
the goat cheese from lijiang maybe a bit too old. .

The rest of the food was good and reasonable.

Might go there again one day, if i need yunnan food.

Real yunnan food u only can get in yunnan..

Don’t be put off by its weird name – this restaurant is a winner. Not too expensive (dining with 8 people set us back about 700 kuai), good food, and the xixi juice is a winner. I don’t like haw very much, but the juice didn’t have the smoky flavor that makes me want to gag. The lemongrass chicken was a delight, though I wouldn’t recommend any of the salads. The fungus dish wrapped up in bamboo/reed leaves was amazing, and the wait staff were very helpful after mixing up our order. Despite the mixup, the overall experience was a pleasant one, and we’ve returned multiple times since that initial visit.

Don't expect anything less than exotic, Yunnanese flavors perfectly done. One signature dish - Sautéed Eggs with Jasmine Blossoms, with its powerful fragrant aroma - is extremely popular. The egg may be humble fare, but it takes the insight of a culinary genius to make it become something akin to a flower. Pineapple with rice is a trademark Southeast Asian flavor also native to Yunnan, with a sweet and sour taste. Also try the Fried Potato Balls in Dai ethnic style or the Grilled Tilapia, and don’t go past the Chopped Pork (or beef), with Green Pepper & Root Mustard. A tasty dessert is served free of charge.

Great food, great service, great decor

This is not your typical Chinese restaurant, but very unique. The decor is simple, but done to a good standard, relaxing atmosphere, friendly waitstaff who do not look bored. The food is great too, pricier than your average Chinese, but perfect for that little Chinese treat, and a great place to take friends. I would heartily recommend! (and its always packed, but you dont always need a reservation in the week)

tasty and healthy

Compared to other Yunnan places, this one is more concerned with healthy way of cooking: less oily, no MSG, and seasonal produce from Yunnan. The papaya fish hotpot is absolutely my favorite: very fresh fish and toufu with spicy source to dip in with. Btw, it's a good venue to spot Chinese celebrities as well.

The best yunnan restaurant.

Had the pleasure of learning this new restaurant last night with friends who favor it as well. The place was quite busy so "note to self: call ahead for reservation." Despite being a physically large restaurant, it is split into multiple floors. We were on the third floor and I would aim for there again as it was quiet. The tables were spaced comfortably apart, the ceilings high, good ventillation and the public areas of the restaurant and bathrooms were quite clean.

The menu was well prepared with lots of descriptions and good photos. We ordered six dishes (beef with mint leaves appt., mushroom salad, sweet potato and potato dish, dried beef salad, deep fried bamboo worms/bee pupae, braised lemon grass chicken and a pea dish). Everything was delicious and well seasoned - not too salty, not too bland, not too spicy. There were many other things on the menu that we did not get to but I will certainly return to explore with friends... With three large beers, the tab worked out to about 125RMB per person. Maybe a little expensive, but for the pleasant interior and excellent food, well worth it. The "locals" appear to agree as most of the folks eating dinner were Asian rather than westerners.
