Jenny Lou's 婕妮璐
Despite high-ish prices and the occasional lack of fapiao, Jenny keeps us under spell with her unparalleled selection of imported food (wine, pasta, cheese, coffee, cereal, etc.), toiletries (deodorant, floss, etc.) as well as unsweetened yogurt, fresh herbs, bagels, unblemished veggies – we could go on and on. Greedy and shady!
God, I hate this place. Yeah, I love imported food, yeah I love the convenience, but never again.
I am so F'ing sick of them refusing to give fapiaos, it is time they stopped this b.s.. Every single time I go there it's the same excuse. "Today we just ran out, come back tomorrow". There was a woman there the other day having a good ol' yell at the boss, she had been there 5 times and each time was refused a fapiao.
I usually spend about 700RMB a month at that place and have to fight them for a fapiao every time. I'm over it, April Gourmet may not have the same range as Jenny's but they give me a fapiao every time, no hesitation. I will be going there and to Jingkelong for all my future shopping needs.
The prices at Jenny's are getting obscene. You used to be able to get some good deals there especially with the locally produced cheeses, sour cream, fresh cream etc. I fully understand the costs involved with importing dairy and bulky items so therefore can forgive the price of butter going up 5 kuai in the past year, but now that there are products produced in Beijing, prices should be going down.
You used to be able to get the huge block of Chinese-made cheddar for 23RMB, then it went to 27 which was fine, I was in there the other day and it is 43 Kuai! The local sour cream and fresh cream in the take-away tubs used to be 25ish RMB... now the prices are in the 35 kuai range. The Suki brand range of Chinese cheese costs the same as the imported Great Lakes stuff.
about 30% of their stuff has no price on it, this is because it is expensive. You take it to the register (because the useless staff wandering around haven't the ability to help you or hold knowledge of the products they sell) and they scan it, it is always the priciest stuff on the shelf. I asked them to scan some muesli the other day, 78RMB!
Every shop I do there I find at least one "mistake" on the receipt, and if there is every a special deal, something is on sale, that new price will never be in their register. The online shopping is so terrible, I totally gave up on it, they never have half the stuff you order and as another reviewer said, the prices are never the same as in the stores.
For a better option in laowai shopping go to April Gourmet

Good, but watch for expired foods
A nice treat for those of us who live in Beijing. Friends drive in from hundreds of km away to stock up on carloads of real butter, cheese, and other Western foods from Jenny Lou and April Gourmet. Check expiration dates, since some of the items move very slowly, and also check prices both on the shelf and at checkout. The young staff are also quite childish and sometimes make careless mistakes, which they try to fix in adolescent ways.

Convenience can buy many things
My first few experiences at the chinese supermarkets were good to explore but used to take
a lot of time to get exactly what I needed. But after Jenny Louis things are quite easy. I still visit the chinese supermarkets but jenny louis is a lot of convenience to buy a lot of things.

Go to grocery strore
This is my go-to grocery store. There are better in Beijing but none so convenient. Prices are higher than April Gourmet (the other convenient grocery store) but selection is often better. In all honesty, I would probably be signing April Gourmet’s praises if I lived close to them but I don’t so I won’t. Either way, thank God for Jenny Lou!

Rude, Cheating Jenny
First a warning on their shady pricing when shopping online!
the price listed on goods will not be the same as the price in your shopping cart. Wine, cheese and so on will have one price listed, but once you add it to your shopping cart it will have another unit price. This goes for about 1 in 5 goods so make sure you double check the prices!
My experience of Jenny Lou's delivery services have been...aweful. Dont think there are anyother words that describe it appropriately.
First time I used their delivery service I bought stuff at their store, riding on my bike that time I asked if it was possible for them to deliver to my house since I wanted to buy quite a few things including several bottles of wine. I was told this was no problem, and I was asked to be at home at 5pm for when the delivery guy would arrive (this was at around 1-2 pm). At 6 pm they had still not arrived, I was getting a bit worried because I was meant to cook dinner for some friends that evening. I called and was told they were on their way. Hours went by, followed by several phone calls from me asking what was going on, with the lady at the other end of the phone getting ruder and ruder towards me, telling me I had no business demanding delivery and that the food would arrive whenever it suited them. Eventually I had to order take away for my guests and the food arrived at around 22:00.
If it is not possible for them to deliver why then do they not just say so, thereby avoiding all these problems? I suspect they were eager to sell me all those extra bottles of wine that I wouldnt have bought if they didnt deliver because I wouldnt be able to carry them all on my bike...
Second time I decided to order from Jenny Lou's was through their online service, as I had moved far away from any western style grocery store. I called and was told I needed to order a minimum of 500 rmb to qualify for the free delivery service. And so I did.
The next day in the evening the food was delivered. I did the stupid mistake of taking the boxes of food and simply paying the delivery guy without checking the items inside. When I opened it it turned out that some of the items were swapped out with more expensive things, for example bottles of wine that I had bought because they were cheap were swapped out with another type which was 10-20 rmb more expensive. Instead of butter they had put in two boxes of spread (how am I supposed to bake with that?) and so on.
I tried calling the phone number I had been given to customer service for deliveries, surprise surprise this number is "Out of service", and I tried calling several times. I wrote a couple of emails to the email address which I had had previous correspondence with them, but never got any reply!
I thought oh well this is China after all and cursed myself for not double checking, although I guess I expected a place with a western mark-up on their prices to also have western standards and service.
Next time I decided to order from Jenny lou's online I told myself this time I would double check everything. Being more carefull I noticed that the price listed is not the same as the price of the goods when you put them in your shopping cart!!! for example, a cheese that says it is 9 rmb per 100g will all of a sudden cost 12 rmb per 100g when you have placed it in your shopping cart. You will not notice this unless you go through the list of prices and goods at the very end of your online shopping. BE AWARE!!!!!!!
This happend to a lot of goods, perhaps one in ever five that I put into my shopping cart. Especially cheese, alcohol products and bread. Some times it will only be a few 2-5rmb but still! It's as if they are trying to cheat you bit by bit!
I submitted my order after taking away any goods that had the "wrong" pricing and it totaled almost 600 rmb (since I need over 500 rmb to qualify for free delivery).
The next day staff from Jenny Lou's called and told me they did not have x, y , z of the goods. Pretty much a third of the goods I had ordered they seemed to be out of stock. Some goods I could change for another brand of the same type without there being a big difference in price, but several of the goods only had a much pricier alternative, to which I said that then Id rather not get the item.
After they had removed all the goods from the list the total turned out to be around 470, below the required 500, and they told me I should exchange one of the goods I wanted but that they were out of stock for a more expensive variety of it in order to make the total amount above 500.
I told them I did not want to do so and that I believed that since I was not that far below the 500 minimum, and in fact had intended to buy things for about 600 but that this was not possible because they where out of stock, their problem, I thought they should deliver it anyways free of charge. After I said this the woman got really angry shouting at me that I was wasting her time and I was being a horrible person for refusing to meet the 500 rmb required amount(?!). I told her I thought she was being rude and that I no longer wished to buy anything from them if this is how they were going to talk to their customers. I hung up the phone with the lady still shouting at me angry because I had wasted their time. Well ditto, I had wasted my time on their website buying goods that they dont stock (and I spent a lot of time on the website because I had to double check all their f**** prices to avoid being cheated!).
I will never ever again buy things from Jenny Lou's online. Be aware of their cheating pricing system and prepare yourself to be insulted by their foulmouthed staff!

Wrong website address
The website address given here is actually for "Jenny's", a Shunyi-based rival to Jenny Lou's. Not that it matters much, but if you live outside of Shunyi they charge 500 kuai for delivery. Real website is www.jennylou.com.cn

Evil temptress!
Ah, Jenny Lou's! How you lure me in with your wine, your cheese, your filter coffee, your herbs and spices, your olives, pasta, plum tomatos and sundry condiments! I can't stop buying your wine in particular - how fantastic to be able to buy wine for less than absurd >70RMB a bottle prices.
I want to leave you but my senses tell me to stop. You're poison running through my veins - expensive, imported delicious poison. You are emptying my wallet and expanding my waist-line, but I just... can't... help it!

Useful shop, appalling customer service
I've shopped at JL's ever since arriving in Beijing, and whilst it's very expensive it does stock a lot of products that would otherwise be unavailable. However, I placed my first delivery order last night - mostly for wine, about 200RMB's worth. The website said that delivery was available for 50RMB to customers living more than 5km away from the Lido branch. I'm in Wudaokou. I received a phone call this morning telling me that if I wanted a delivery to Wudaokou I'd have to order 800RMB of stuff. There was absolutely nothing about this on the website, so I asked whether they would honour my order anyway given that they had provided insufficient information and I needed the wine for a dinner party this evening. As far as I'm concerned, the fact that their website is out of date is their problem and not mine, so they should honour the order and update the website.
They refused to do this unless I paid for a taxi to deliver my order, which I felt was unreasonable. Why should I pay for their mistake, which has caused me inconvenience? Of course I can buy some wine from the 7 Eleven, but it's the principle: a Western-style shop charging so much for their products should provide Western-standards of service to match, i.e. absorb the cost of their own mistakes. And they certainly shouldn't advertise a service they are unable to provide. Apparently they deliver from the the Lido branch using electric carts, which seems ridiculous given that the Lido is out near the airport. Why not get a van?
This was pretty annoying, but what really upset and offended me - and prompted me to write this review - was the way I was treated on the phone by an American (?) member of staff. He was extremely unhelpful and high-handed, telling me that the store could not possibly afford to honour my order as it would take 'several hours' to drive to my house (it actually only takes half an hour from the airport, and I'm pretty sure the trip wouldn't make much of a dent in JL's profit margins). Moreover he accused me of being 'irate' and 'sarcastic' and of ruining his morning. Well there's nothing like being accused of being irate and sarcastic to make you become both... Plus this incident didn't exactly improve my morning either.
I understand that it would be a further than usual delivery and that after the website has been changed incidents like this won't happen again. But I do think that if a business makes a mistake then they and not tbe customer should shoulder the cost and inconvenience, and apologise sincerely rather than accuse the customer of being unreasonable.

Real convenient store
Groceries or cheese or some coffee or whatever you need to sustain a white collar executive life for an expat everything can be found here.
They do deliver .
Between April Gourmet and jenny lous ,though april gourmet has some products which jenny lous doesnt have , jenny lous is more consistent on service and product availability.
Both are good for me .
Keep going to both, sometimes here ,sometimes here.
Some prices at april gourmet are higher than jenny lous, but its not a big issue.

Beware of fake Fapiao from Jenny's...!
Over the years Jenny Lou's has became famous for NOT giving fapiao to customers.
Last time I came with 3 old tickets and, 2011 approching, I insisted. After 35 minutes of waiting, I got my piece of paper.
Then I gave it to our accountant... who told me "it's a fake" !
So, beware. We alerted the tax services (12366), please do so if this happens to you.

Excellent place to go when you need to stock up on "home"
Jenny Lou's has everything you need, when you decide its time to impress your Chinese friends with cooking from the west or if you just want to stock up on good Cheese and meats. Granted prices are high, but if your on a decent expat salary here, the prices really are affordable. One minus is their delivery service. I know they are very busy but its often slow and you dont always get what you want. It would be great if they got an internet page where you could select what you wanted so as to make sure you get exactly what you order.

some regular food are also can be found here, price is sometimes a little more then bigger supermarkets. they also have a big area for DVDs, you should be able to finish the shopping on one stop.

go there too much...
jenny lou's is terrific. it's expensive but worth it. much better than BHG which is huge but doesnt actually have much of anything you might want to buy. Jenny Lou's is smaller space wise but has everything you might need.

Ex-pat Hide-away
Jenny Lou's is the place to go if you are an ex-pat looking to forget that you are in China. Chock full of imported goods, Jenny Lou's makes living in China just a little easier... on everything except for your wallet that is. It's extremely easy to drop a cool 400-1200 RMB per visit if you aren't careful with what you are loading up your cart. It is hard to resist the familiar cheese, cocoa powder, cake and brownie mixes - there's no denying this. Jenny Lou's is definitely one of the culprits for fat ex-pats living here in China.
