Kafe Peranakan 阿琊汉餐吧

Malaysia’s eclectic gastronomy mirrors its multiculturalism, encompassing, among others, Peranakan (Straits Chinese), Indian and Malay cuisines. Kafe Peranakan, located behind Kuntai Dasha on Chaowai, captures this variety. Its version of roti canai, a pastry-like pancake typically eaten with curry gravy, is offered alongside an array of roti re-inventions such as banana, sausage and mayonnaise wraps, while the hot favorite teh tarik (“pulled tea,” in Malay) is prepared to frothy perfection at your table, with the waiter “pulling” the milk tea back and forth between mugs. More substantial items include main dishes such as stir-fried prawns with shrimp paste and nasi lemak, the latter an all-in-a-plate meal of coconut rice, curry and condiments, as well as chicken curry, pakora, randang beef curry, satay, assam fish curry and more. The food is complemented by a contemporary, yet unmistakeably Malaysian, decor.

Excellent Malaysian food

A little expensive, but consistently excellent food. Service is generally good.

Milk tea, Nyonya Chicken Curry, and flatbread all worth going back for multiple times

Kafe Peranakan is great for a relaxing lunch break from work. The decor is nice but not extraordinary, and includes a flat screen tv at one end of the room upstairs that plays muted Malaysian tourism segments on repeat. So that's not too special, but they have some big cushy chairs to spread out in and great drinks, including hot or cold Malaysian milk/chai-style tea, always poured in a showy fashion to make it nice and bubbly. The nyonya chicken curry is fantastic, with some roundish red chili peppers that I don't see used much in dishes around Beijing but have a delicious and unique flavor. I also always order their stuffed flatbread, which is offered with a variety of fillings including banana, mango, and pineapple. They also have good pork spare ribs and several great fish dishes. Prices could be slightly lower, but considering the location, they come as no surprise and I think the food is worth it. Most good places to eat nearby are more expensive.

Two thumbs up!

A bit over-priced for the type of service, decor was touchy, but the food selection is just far too less. Would recommend Awana or Lau Pa Sak better, but this would make a great joints for drinks.
