My favorite is the beef
Reviewed on May 17, 2012 4:29pm by Pearl_babyReview of Le Petit Gourmand4Under new management, LPG is better now than it ever was in the past. The space is the same but the food is very much better. My favorite is the beef cous cous with an inexpensive glass of wine. Seating is ample and service is improving. If you like reasonably priced French food then give this restaurant a try.

Crappy Ad
Reviewed on Feb 29, 2012 9:38am by fatboyReview of Le Petit Gourmand3"Free to attend
Looking for an excuse to eat outside? Then this once-every-four-years event is the perfect one for you to come enjoy our menu, at a special discount of only 198 yuan!"
If I attended this free event, I think watching strangers eat would not be very entertaining. ...But then, French chefs are known for their presentation skills.

Terrible food, nice atmosphere.
Reviewed on Nov 28, 2011 4:25pm by KeruReview of Le Petit Gourmand1I really want to like the place, the house wine is good, there is an amazing book collection and even the waiting staff are polite. However my Tabouleh starter and Pasta main were almost unedible due to the ridiculous amounts of oil and complete lack of flavour, it was probably the worst meal I've had in China. I admit that I didn't order typical French food, but if the food is bad, just leave it off the menu so no-one has to eat what I did.
One star because I could go there for a nice glass of wine, but personally I would stay far far far away from anything from the kitchen.

Reviewed on Jul 20, 2010 12:00pm by hz90Review of Le Petit Gourmand3a little bit expensive, but I love the interior. the books really create a great environment, although I'm not sure how great the actual library selection is. the crepes taht I had here were only decent, but i'd definitely come back again to hang out or study.

Great book selection
Reviewed on Jul 20, 2010 10:51am by simmi_mehraReview of Le Petit Gourmand5I have never eaten here but go there to borrow books. At 150 rmb for 6 months, its really value for money to borrow books from here. You can borrow two book at a time. They have a great English language selection and the condition of the books are great too. The staff is really helpful. Also it is full most evenings so the food must be great too. I love this place :D

Croque Monsieur, Cheese and Chalkboard Specials
Reviewed on Jul 20, 2010 2:34am by slbeijingReview of Le Petit Gourmand3The coffee is fine and the croque monsieur, cheese and dishes on the chalkboard are tasty. However, service here is atrocious; in particular, there is one server who is always frowning, unresponsive and hard to track down.
There were at least two instances last year when the water wasn't running for some reason, so they couldn't make coffee. Not sure if it was a neighborhood/building issue or just here. Either way, I left because I was concerned that that meant the staff were not washing their hands.
I've tried to order crepes before, but was told they are only available on certain days. Disappointing.

Delicious crepes!
Reviewed on Jul 20, 2010 12:36am by snakeyruthReview of Le Petit Gourmand4This restaurant makes fantastic crepes! Had the crepes with butter and sugar the other night and it instantly won me over. The big table in the middle of the room is perfect if you have a big group of people. Great place for dessert during a date!

Reviewed on Jul 17, 2010 2:29pm by lianeReview of Le Petit Gourmand4went there with couple of french friends, the first impression is it is a library then a eatry.
we ordered Couscous, cheese fondue and other small things, food are not bad indeed. and the price, kinda local. i mean, you don't have spend furtune in a french restaurant if you come here.
this place will become one of my regular going. Just sit, read, and have some finger food, would be nice.- 114 views

Le Petit Gourmand revisited
Reviewed on Jul 16, 2010 11:53pm by wsReview of Le Petit Gourmand3It’s kind of reassuring that after all these years and in the midst of so much competition, Le Petit Gourmand is still going… I hadn't been for years so I was happy to see that they still had gravlax on the menu... We had a chicken and plum tagine and a lamb cous cous which we shared and they were delicious (although the lamb was perhaps a little dry). It’s also a good place for an afternoon coffee. Although the homemade cake was disappointing, too sweet with not much else in the way of flavour and expensive at 38rmb... But overall, Le Petit Gourmand is still worth a visit for the things they do well.

Economical priced choice of french food
Reviewed on Mar 8, 2010 10:37am by cutapieReview of Le Petit Gourmand3For those like me who like french styled food occassionally choose their lunch options, they pretty good value for money, the taste is not so good but still fine for the price.
At the dinner time though with so many pubs making so much noise its a not my place for dinner.
For a booklover like me I like to browse the books when I have my coffee and it stimulates my mind .- 182 views

Mama's French Cooking
Reviewed on Jan 28, 2010 10:45am by lip3Review of Le Petit Gourmand4Le Petit Gourmand has enticed French and Western expatriates with its alternative to fine-dining French cuisine, which can often be intimidating and snooty with its well-presented but minute portions. Gourmand serves large (French size not US size) portions of home-style french cuisine.
With a great selection of daily blackboard specials and the standard menu, the Mauritius chef trained under a 3 star Michelin chef, knows how to make each morsel perfect for students, romantic couples, businessmen and tourists. Styled like a library with actual books one can check out and a cozy lit veranda filled with greenery, Gourmand has the atmosphere of home, albeit a stylish home.
Chilled French beer and drinks like Hot-Spiced Wine, made of grilled almond, lemon, orange peel and cinnamon and side spoon of sugar are great starters to the meals. A must order is the Escargot, smooth with an intense pulsating garlic flavor. The sauce of olive oil and melted cheese it is satiated with is magnificent and wonderful for mopping up with the equally impressive freshly baked on the premises white bread- traditionally crusty and crunchy just like in France.
The Pan- Fried Goose Liver with caramelized napes and drizzled with balsamic sauce is another must. Placed on fried bread the goose is moist and succulent with an astounding contrasting taste when combined with the tart and spicy caramelized napes. The balsamic sauce was also perfect to dip the bread in.
Even the house red wine (VDP and) is reminiscent of France (and even bottled in France), with its medium tannin which finely adapts to the dishes. Surprisingly, Gourmand is famous for its couscous. The Maragese Couscous is served with home-made sausage, petite but juicy and chewy, and fried pepper and vegetable soup. The mild and light couscous which you would just love to toss and toss and observe its fluffy texture, is topped with spicy Harissa paste and then generously drizzled with the vegetable soup, and eaten with the sausage and eggplant. It was a fun presentation and interesting combination, but making it dry and a little bland for my preferences.
The Rib-eye steak with purple sauce included fatty cuts but was nicely and enthusiastically peppered leaving a aromatic taste though was served too cold. Gourmand is the only restaurant to do BBQ all year round, and one should take advantage of it this winter and have the meat barbequed.
The home-made French fries were also pleasant, not too salty but plump and light with a slight crunch to them. For dessert, the hot chocolate, a secret recipe and the only ingredient I can reveal is that Cadbury chocolate is used is a replica of traditional French hot chocolate, and a well needed addition. The Café Latte is exquisite. The Tiramisu is catered to those who desire less potent variations and has only a slight taste of coffee or alcohol, but one should try to the Upside Down Apple Tart, for which any proceeds go to an NGO to buy heaters for schools in China. The Floating Island custard was spongy yet fluffy and served with delicious sweet milk one could simply gobble up. To finish the meal do try the Pear Brandy or Charmeuse one of the oldest drinks in France, and potent with 55% alcohol yet sweet and thus dangerous. At around 200-300 rmb per person, Le Petit Gourmand is a great place to get high quality French food in a warm environment and leave satisfied. In fact one will leave feeling almost loved and over-fed, just like if one was at Mama’s home for dinner.

Cozy and good food
Reviewed on Feb 8, 2009 11:39am by qiaoqiaoReview of Le Petit Gourmand4Totally positive experience, the only minus about this place is the location in the Tongli Studios, well, being in the middle of pubs and clubs is not really suitable for a French restaurant.
About the food: I had a beef steak (250g) that came together with a tomato covered with a gratin sauce and a potato pie. I am not so used to eat steaks, but I was satisfied with that one, at least you don't need to eat anything else later.
My wife had a salmon cream pasta which, even if not really French, it was adequate to the other dishes in term of quality.
My other friend got a chicken couscous which looked really good, especially if compared to the one in 1001 Nights.Environment: cozy, relaxing, suitable both for friends and couples, lots of books (you can get lost while looking for your favourite one).
Price: definetely affordable! a bit more than 90RMB for my steak and around 60-70 for couscous (depend from the style). Pastas relatively expensive, you shouldn't order them there!!!
Wine: very limited choice of wine by glass unfortunately, but nevertheless my red one was good enough to drink with my steak.

Good Food, comfortable atmosphere
Reviewed on Dec 5, 2008 11:46am by canuckistanReview of Le Petit Gourmand4The owner of this place is always hovering around, making sure things go smoothly. The result is a restaurant that rarely disappoints and typically has great food at not-too-outrageous expat prices.
The veg sandwich is an absolute deal at 30 RMB with great bread, salad, and fries. The steak tends to be pretty good, the french sausages (well, not the andouillettes, ew) are great, and the crepes are well done. This is a restaurant where I am not afraid to try new dishes every time I go. The only downer is that the rotisserie chicken tends to be pretty dry, which is a shame, because nailing that would be a minor coup.
Drinks are nice, the wine is pleasant, and the service not overly obsequious. They don't complain when you sit around all afternoon working away on your laptop with a coffee or water, and the Internet is reliable. Evenings, the place fills up rapidly after 8, so you might want to consider reservations after that.
Highly recommended.

Simply marvelous, if I could it should have received 4.5 stars
Reviewed on Nov 8, 2008 10:24am by ajjarrettReview of Le Petit Gourmand4No restaurant is perfect, but Le Petit Gourmand comes really close.
Last academic year and all throughout the winter holiday, a colleague of mine, who now teaches in France, went here a lot. The set menu for lunch is reasonable in price and the selection changes quite often so you do get a nice variety. The quality of ingredients are high and you will not walk away at all unsatisfied. Service is effective and pleasant. You don't feel rushed and you can enjoy the environment and the company you are with. This doesn't imply the service is slow, on the contrary they are quick, but allow you to enjoy the food. Especially if you ordered from the set menu so you can enjoy each course to its fullest.
My friend and I used to go to Le Bistrot Parisien, but after going to Le Petit Gourmand we decided never to go back. The atmosphere is nice in both places, but in the end we truly enjoyed Gourmand's warm and cozy feeling over the café feeling of Le Bistrot.
I suggest trying both, but you, like the two of us, might just end up always going to the Le Petit Gourmand.
Bon appetit
