Le Pré Lenôtre (Le Pre Lenotre)

Boasting an impressive Parisian culinary pedigree – the Le Pré Catelan restaurant and the Lenôtre chain of gourmet stores are named as antecedents – Sofitel Wanda’s premium restaurant serves upmarket French cuisine with a modern twist - Boston Lobster, Foie Gras Terrine with plum sauce and more. Two- and three-course set lunches cost RMB 148, 198 or 388, plus 15% service fee, while the seven-course dégustation menu is a sumptuous extravagance, particularly if paired with wine (RMB 888-1,280).

An unforgetablly upsetting experience

My husband and I picked this place for our 5th anniversary + valentine's day dinner. I regret immensely later on....

The dinner went ok, although I did not fancy the duck chest or the dissert that much. What really kills the day was at the check-out. I did not find out until the next day when I received my electronic credit card bill that I was charged RMB3,000 ON TOP OF what I spent (the 2,488 for the set dinner). I called the restaurant and they told me to wait while they checked to see what happened. They called back in the afternoon and told me that their server who helped me with the bill made a mistake by placing both bills of my table and my neighboring table on my credit card. But the point is I never signed the 3,000 bill, and the transaction still went through.... They didn't offer any timeline for a solution but told me to wait for them to "sort things out with their finance dept.". Then they did not contact me until I called back the next day, and found out what their version of the solution is: to get the right person to pay the bill first, then they'd get their bank to refund the money to my credit card bank, which takes at least 30 working days - I was told.

So at this point, I am totally disappointed and upset, feeling that I am being punished for someone else's mistake. And that mistake was made by a 5-star hotel + a so-called Michelin restaurant -- so you know how unreliable these things can be. And most disappointing is the way they have been handling this incident: I don't feel any part of real regrests from their part, and their real concern is to make sure to get someone to pay for the 3,000 bill. I even got a feeling that their finance dept. would probably not do the refund for me until they get the right person to get it paid. What kind of logic is that?! This incident totally ruined my anniversary in retrospect....

So in light of what happened to me 48 hours ago after I paid 2,488, I would NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone!

Fine French dining

If you're after French food in a traditionally elegant setting, Le Pre Lenotre is one to be sure to check out. It's not a once-a-week type of place, but perfect for special occasions. The food tends to be rich, with plenty of red meat flavored with good sauces, so don't go overboard on your lunch if you're coming here for dinner. The desserts are a highlight, and there's a good wine list.

Visiting chefs are a rare treat

For me the most exciting thing about this restaurant is the sheer number of Michelin starred guest chefs they seem to have year on year from France. I've been fortunate enough to eat several meals prepared by various visiting culinary wizards, and it's always a memorable occasion.

Fancy French that'll make you forget you're in Beijing

From its intimate, ornate dining room and French maitre d' to its delicious cuisine, Le Pre Lenotre (on the 6th floor of the Sofitel Wanda) is definitely a must-try.

Be sure to inquire about off-menu items like the oven-roasted chateaubriand for 2 -- easily one of the finer cuts of beef served in Beijing and the luscious morel sauce gives it an unforgettable flavor.

Premium service and food means premium prices, but budget-conscious diners can enjoy some of the finest French cuisine in Beijing as well by visiting at lunch on weekdays, where ample set menus start at RMB 148.

Expensive, but you get what you pay for

Had dinner there this weekend after catching 2012 at wanda next door. Thankfully, the food was much better than the movie. I tried out the special Gourmet Month menu that they have this month for Rmb 250++. It's pretty good value. Otherwise, the bill would have easily exceeded Rmb 500 per head. Both the lamb and veal which were done perfectly. I'd save this restaurant for a special occassion or to impress guests (or a large expense budget). You do get what you pay for here.

A heart-stopping dining experience (arteries clogging, wallet emptying)

In the interest of full disclosure I am not a big fan of French food, but I'm always looking to be convinced otherwise. Therefore I felt a trip to the elegant and highly rated Le Pré Lenôtre (whose unpronounceable name alone makes me feel inadequate) would perhaps open my eyes.

No such luck.

In all fairness its a fabulous dining room and service is absolutely top notch. However, the food was so heavy on rich sauces that I felt every forkful was bringing me just a bit closer to a gruesome death due to atherosclerosis-induced heart failure. I did my best to alleviate the damage ala the "French paradox" by having a glass of wine but much of it was just too rich to consume.

Receiving the shocking bill for lunch -- nearly RMB 500 each for both me and my dining partner -- did not help my heart condition.

Won't be going back myself, but for those with strong hearts and a love for service, style and heavy foods, I'd suggest giving it a try.
