Not so Great
Just recently tried MARE and although the tapas were good, we were not overly impressed. This is a perfect restaurant for vegetarians as it had many vegetarian tapas choices. We chose to order dinners off the menu, after having sampled four of the tapas (all good) but it was a huge mistake. The dinners were not well-prepared - the monkfish was over-cooked, the entrecote steak was tough and fatty, and the grilled vegetables were overly spiced with rosemary (which I normally enjoy, but it was entirely too strong - masking and overpowering any other tastes). We will not go to MARE again - unless it is a destination with a group of people wanting to have tapas and drinks with no concern for money and value. Prices were unreasonably high - especially for Beijing.

nothing special for a Spanish restaurant
I only tried the one at Guanghua Road with a couple of friends...
I ordered the sirloin for main course...
they couldn't do it as how I wanted...medium rare...
what they brought me was almost well done...tough and dry...
It took us a while to find cuz the entrance was at the backyard side of the e-tower.

It's one of the best places to eat......
One of the best western place to eat.
The decor is nice & clean. the wait staff is quick & knowledgable. My friend tried the filet mignon steak, I ordered lamb chops and pork loin with blue cheese. The Lamb was great and the steak was juicy and full of flavor. Their wine selection is also good.
Would definitely visit again.

Food poisoning?
I've probably been to Mare about 15 times over the last couple of years (the SLT location) and have never had anything but good meals there. I consider it a pretty good value for someone that wants to get "Western food" without getting financially mugged at one of the 5 star hotel restaurants. They've also got a decent wine list, and a relatively quiet atmosphere for a quiet night out with the missus. It's at LEAST as good as that Salt place that's constantly self promoting here.
5 stars.
Cheers,

spanish without the olives
Went to this restaurant last year and was surprised when after ordering a plate of olives received the response "sorry we have none". When asked why they replied, "we forgot to order them today".
What kind of spanish restaurant forgets to order olives?
It's like an italian restaurant forgetting to order tomatoes..

The food poisoning I got there ruined my NYs eve
I had been to both locations of Mare a couple of times before and was always pleased by the food. But my last experience there was pretty awful.
I went to their e-tower location on Tuesday evening.
Ordered pan con tomate, dipped in my friend s starter (grilled bellpeppers, shrimps and tuna) too, we both had the salmon with shrimp cream as main course.
Well ... I got pretty uneasy just after my meal, went to bed exhausted and just woke up in the middle of the night to be very sick, all my Wednesday was spent in bed, no NYs eve celebration for me ... the person I was eating with also felt uncomfortable but did not get sick
I can expect food poisoning when I eat skewers down in the street for 5 yuan, but at 100 rmb/dish, wine non included, for the worst food poisoning I ve had in 5y in China, I m feeling a bit angry.
I don t know if sth in the food was off or if other hygiene rules were not respected, but at this price, it is just unforgivable.

great eats, good atmosphere, good restaurant
i have to say that i really enjoyed this restaurant. the tapas are quite big, so it is a good value for your money. they are also really tasty; good ingredients. although, they do use white, sourdough bread for everything tapas that we ordered, so that was a bit strange.
the entrees were nothing extraordinary. they were a good size and tasted fine, but not amazing.
the desserts were not out of the world fantastic but they were really good.
we brought our own bottle of wine and they charged an 80RMB corkage fee for that.
the negative that i experienced is that, my partner and i ordered 3 things on the menu and were told that none of those could be made because they; didn't have chicken, didn't have the special cookies for the tapas, and the oven was broken so they couldn't make that specific item. - for such a classy and expensive restaurant, to have 3 items in one meal that can't be served seems to suggest that there is a problem.
the atmosphere feels very modern and clean; kind of like an art gallery. personally, i didn't feel like it's the kind of place for a romantic dinner, but others may feel otherwise.
with that being said; i had a great experience here and would recommend it.
