Maison Boulud 布鲁宫法餐厅
This tour de force from celebrity chef Daniel Boulud showcases the "Jay-Z of the restaurant world's" skills, honed by operating his world-famous French restaurants in New York, to delicious effect. Anchoring the high-profile tenants within the dining and nightlife complex at Ch’ien Men 23 (formerly the Legation Quarter), Maison Boulud occupies the restored site of the former American embassy, its decor - featuring two symmetrical white staircases, a Versailles fountain, refined mahogany wood furnishings, white columns and neoclassical chandeliers - was inspired by French glamour from the 18th century to the chic 1930s. Led by Executive Chef Brian Reimer and General Manager Nicolas Socquet, the kitchen prepares fine cuisine featuring traditional French flavors combined with exotic elements such as Middle Eastern spices. Entrees run the gambit from tender salmon to beef (try the famous DB Burger topped with truffles), but the desserts are equally enticing; almost all featuring fresh fruit. This place is certainly pricey, but their popular weekend brunch (available Sat and Sun, 11am-4pm) is a better value at RMB 98-238. Voted “Best French (High End),” "Best Wine List," "Best Service," "Outstanding for Impressing Visitors," "Outstanding Decor," "Outstanding Brunch," and "Non-Chinese Restaurant of the Year" in the Beijinger’s 2011 Reader Restaurant Awards.

Sometimes you just have to treat yourself to some nice things in life
Maison Boulud is such a nice thing, that you treat yourself to, once in a while (unless you are really rich and go there for some take away, to escape what your 10 chefs create for you in your mansion).
Its a very nice place, the location is kind of weird, outside its a really loud and busy street, but once you turn into the driveway of this former american embassy its as though you are in europe (on a very hot and humid day).
We went there for brunch and could try a lot of dishes for a comparably low price (it was still like 1000 rmb for two), but if you only drink water (the free one, not the evian ;)) then you can get away with 600rmb).
The food looked really cute as my girlfriend said, if she werent so hungry she would have probably not eaten it because it looked so nice. It all tasted very good, except maybe the beef tartare, but that might just be a personel thing since I never liked beef tartare that much but wanted to try it out there since many people recommended it. The duck confit was my favourite.
They also serve you bread with i guess homemade marmelades before and french madeleines and small deserts after the courses you ordered and they keep "refilling" those. Also the waiter was very thoughtful and caring to the degree that he reminded me of my grandmother, always folding up my napkin whenever i left the table (it might have been that I left the napkin too much of a mess)
All in all I'm looking forward to the next special occasion when we can go there.

Best restaurant in beijing
Have been there with friends and were all very very happy to escape from Beijing for a while...
Go there without any hesitations.
A bit expensive but its normal if we want quality ...
Price per person around 400 yuan for a meal + dessert per person (without wine).

Very impressive location and surroundings, excellent service, minimalist food
It is hard to comment this venue, especially if you are not used to this kind of restaurant, and I'm not, despite the fact I'm a Frenchman (A poor one I guess).
Anyway, the location is really impressive and it is usually enough to impress anyone who knows the modern architecture of today's beijing. You feel like going back 200 years ago. The place looks like a Manoir (former US embassy during the Qing dynasty ?), and there is even a lake with some weird smoke on it. The clients mostly arrive in their fancy ferrari and other Benz car.
The wine list is huge and impressive. If you want to read all of it you may need an hour, perhaps more, and most certainly you will still not be sure about which one to choose.
The food is very minimalist, but very tasy. I know that is a common character for elite french restaurant. I'm not used to it so I do not really appreciate this kind of food.
Finally the prices are very, very high. Do not expect less than 2000 RMB for a dinner pour deux in this place, especially if you take a nice wine and dessert.
if you have some money left, there is a small Patek Philippe boutique just outside of the Manoir to buy original watches :-)

Great restaurant, just a tad over-rated because its the only one with that quality
Without being a showoff I must explain first that for familly reason Im really accustomed to very high class french restuarants since childhood. So I might seem uselessly picky but its all about being picky if you go to that kind of restaurant. You pay litteraly for small details. And great food, of course.
Maison Boulud is a great restaurant feathuring the kind of quality one can expect from a high-class french restaurant. The service is really professionnal (European, USA professional; not chinese professional) altought a little bit too present (but it might as well be required by the chinese customers who usually like to be more "pampered" in that kind of restaurant than westerners, especially on business meal). The staff speak a great english and is really willing to help you find. The sommelier look also very competent.
The wine menu is really huge and feathure big time classic as well as affordable good surprises. Don't hesitate to ask the sommelier if you feel lost because of the choice!
The price are on the high side but the quality is spotless. You could probably get a level higher (Michelin stars higher) in Paris for that kind of money but in Beijing I know no equivalent to Maison Boulud.
The decoration is elegant but somehow a little bit dark and cold for me (a very personnal judgment). It is intimate however. A bigger flaw is the very very small size of the menu that was somehow disapointing (with not a lot of vegetarian alternatives, but France food is NOT about vegetarian alternatives). Something like 4 entrees, 4 main dishes.
We tried the Foie Gras (potted liver) that was litteraly awesome. We tried also the more common (but still good) salmon. The main dishe we share was a HUGE roasted piece of beef with fine mushrooms. Great meat. It was officialy for 2 but 3 hungry personns could easily feed on this.
It is sad to realize that no dishes where really original. Just plain classical, well cooked and presented dishes. Not such things as the genius of a Pourcel Brother or Marc Verrat restaurant with dishes (Or even that Guy in spain that make molecular food for pretentious douchebags with no taste) you will never see elsewhere.
To sum all this, Yes Maison Boulud is the BEST French high class restaurant in Beijing. And by far. But its also a huge fish in a very tiny pond with few comparisons possible.
This to explain the 4/5 and not 5/5. For his very own niche, he is just VER GOOD, not OUSTANDING.
On a more mundane and common scale he perfectly deserve of course a 5 stars out of 5.

Love it !!
We went there for brunch.
Wow, the place is huge, the courtyard is gorgeus.
We love the duck omelette and the onion soup.
Very good service. The only thing i can complain is about the kids noise,
aggh ! They closely ruin my brunch, why parents don´t properly educate their sons?
If not then stay home with the ayi.
Or just put tables with kids and their families in separate rooms.

Wonderful!
There is not much to say. You can tell by the lengthy remarks below how great this restaurant is! It is a very rare experience not only for Beijing but for anywhere. The wait-staff are just wonderful this place has first class customer service. Pricy but well worth it! When we rented out the restaurant they helped with all the small touches that left our clients in awe. I really cannot say enough good things about this place! MB THANK YOU!

A religious experience
In my foodie world of fine dining and great food Maison Boulud is my mecca. Maison is not merely about the food, but about the entire experience. After arriving and being seated you are presented with the 2 volumes wine list, one red, one (quite smaller) white. The prices reach astronomical levels but I ordered a 500 kuai Malbec that was one of the best I've tried. I am nearly certain that ordering the cheapest bottle you would still receive a palatable wine. The wine was decanted and throughout the evening, as soon as one glass was near empty a server would appear and top off the glasses. This service was consistent throughout the evening. You never felt like the servers were hovering, but as soon as a plate could be cleared, a glass topped up, anything at all they were there.
The menu has a decent selection of starters and mains, along with some French classics. Deciding on the menu can take a while as everything sounds delicious. After ordering canapes were brought over, an asparagus puree and a delicious cream cheese. My starter of frog legs was surprisingly larger than expected. Along with fava beans and asparagus everything was cooked beautifully and a rich sauce seasoned the dish perfectly. My partners tuna confit was light, yet complexly flavored with fresh vegetables and herbs. Our mains were the most tender and succulent pork, baby pig on the menu, with a light and crisp skin. And a beef short rib, delicate and tender. As with all other courses, after we had both finished, the plates were cleared simultaneously, and silverware was set for the next course. The dessert menu, like the dinner menu, offered plenty of options and choosing between the fruit or chocolate based ones were challenging. Two chocolate desserts were both rich, and delicious, each topped off with flecks of gold. During and after dessert we also received fresh madeilines and a dish of multicolor macaroons. After the bill the waitress called for a taxi and we got fresh packaged muffins to bring home, a delicious treat that I got to savour the following morning.
Maison is a rare experience with food not only cooked well but executed on a level not reached elsewhere in the city. The atmosphere is luxurious, but inviting and relaxing. The service is flawless and there are small touches throughout the evening that let you realize this is not any average restaurant to say the least.

Two Thumbs Up!
Everything from decor to food to service was simply the best of the best. We particularly liked how they dished out free desserts after your main course. Free madeleines......nice! We were also given cake and dessert sampler at the end of our meal. Wine pairing was a big plus because we didn't have to think of which wine to go with the food we ordered. Expensive but we will make it a monthly treat.

Ridiculously good
Not the kind of venue most people could afford to visit regularly, but when you have something special to celebrate, and really want to push the boat out, this is the only restaurant worth mentioning. The unpretentious, yet extremely classy environment lends itself perfectly for you to really enjoy your meal and feel 'at home' rather than 'on show.' The food is beyond compare, and there are many additional gifts and surprises that you are given to make you feel appreciated. The price tag is completely justified and, while expensive, is worth every penny.

New York to Beijing - Just as good!
Let's Burger may have a wide variety of offerings, The Den may have the best deal in town but you can't beat the taste of Daniel Boulud's Burger. Fact. Diner be warned - good luck saving room for one of their mouth watering deserts baked in-house each day!
A beautifully designed building, classy atmosphere, and on-point service make every meal at Maison Boulud something to remember.

Stellar
Maison Boulud is a stellar preservation of colonial Beijing and dining. With its well-kept lawns, elegant columns and chestnut color, Maison Boulud impresses upon the visitor the grandeur that is to come.
Stepping into the manor, one is soon washed with a feeling of being in Scarlett O’Hare’s manor from Gone with the Wind, though the colonial dignity is soon supplanted with a fusion of modern sleekness and Greco-roman style.
The bar is lined in deep rich paneling of chocolates and browns, and offers leather stools and lounges to ease into while sharing a drink of lively champagne, complimentary roasted cashew nuts and dried Indian bread. On offer is also lovely cheese and cracker hors devours, which is white, light and fluffy and creams in the mouth adding a decadence to the understated bar.
The main dining room is open yet cozy with 30- tables with dark wood tabletops and chairs and couch seats. The white sheath columns and large windows give it a grandiose and neo-classical ambiance, yet allow the patron to feel privacy and forget the hustle and bustle of the room.
A minimalist menu, simply stating the small selection of Appetizers, Winter Classics, Mains, and so forth is exciting and enticing with its embellished descriptions, with prices ranging from 100 (the very few) to 700 rmb per dish. The wine list, comprising of two volumes is of superlative quality and over-whelming extensiveness. New world wines for 200 rmb to Taittinger Collections at 20,000rmb are all included.
The Chestnut Soup is a capital choice for a starter. The Celery-Chestnut Soup and Pheasant Tartine with Red Currents is a rich golden soup, the silk and velvety texture with its intense chestnut taste and delicate Tartine gives it a latte like feel. Its minimalist approach reduces the dish to its most essential elements, an uncomplicated recipe that reveals how the liver is of impeccable quality and the cream soup is lustrous and serene. Paired with a Chardonnay Shanxi China Grace Vineyard Tasya’s Reserve 2005, the citric and sweet Shanxi wine distinguishes the contrast of tastes admirably.
A Caviar and Organic Egg Yolk gives a polished transition. The Green Apple Gelee, Pique with Anise Seeds, Pumpernickel Toast has an intense aroma and is integrated with the light spices coming from the fine poached egg , which pair with the toast. There is a slight apple hint from the Gelee on the flavor palate that goes with the minerals from the caviar. To mirror the taste of the poached egg, the Chardonnay Burgundy France Pouilly Fuissé Domain Roux Père and Fils 2008, is a fine compliment, and the wine has a tart berry taste. It also kept a great vibrant acidity that adds complexity and a gradual development to the course. A very long finish ends this harmonious pairing.
The Tuna Seared << à la Plancha >> and, Carrot << Cru et Cuit >>, with Creamy Spinach, Jus à la Diable is best when medium rare, as the western chefs know. Marinated and briefly seared, it melts in the mouth and releases the blended melody of herbs and spices leaving a heavier and heartier taste to the senses. The sensual experience of the tuna is only enhanced with the rippleless of a Alentejo Courela Portugal Cortes de Cima 2005, with a rich red color and spiciness that lingers on the tongue.
The Lamb will not disappoint either. Grilled Australian Loin with Variation of Cauliflower, Pomegranate Seeds, Sumac and couples with a Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot, Bordeaux France, Chateau La Rame 2005 imbues a delicate flavor and a desire to have it enlarged and magnified to surpass the serving plate. Simply and eagerly stated, it is to die for, and immaculate, one of the crowning glories of the meal, and unequaled with any meat tasted before in Beijing. The Pomegranate seeds inundate a paradisiacal high to the mouth when coupled with the lamb.
Throughout the meal, the chicly dressed staff offer complimentary bread, which is soft and moist to cater to the locals (which also encompassed 80% of the clientele) and is served with tamarind, whole wheat, and almond. Though not a classical serving bread, the cloyingly honey taste is a nice palate cleanser between dishes, and can be dangerously persuasive. Patrons are also treated to house-made marshmallow. Presented in a carnival-like large vat, it is carved in front of the table and served in small squares of mint and strawberry flavor and color. The sacchariferous marshmallows are airy and featherlike and diffuse too quickly in the mouth, though they are incredible. Equally lavish and vibrantly tasting are the Petit Fours, mini French chocolates and pastries, which come in several variations each minute and powerful. If that weren’t over-excessive, the staff provide complimentary basket of Sweet Madeleins, sugary and yielding.
As a finisher the Duo of Chocolate & Fruit – is superb. The Warm Chocolate Gateaux Coconut and Passionfruit Vacherin served with iced wine Ortega Pfalz Germany, Weltachs Kirchheimer Beerenauslese 2005 delights and titillates. The warm chocolate filling and spicy coconut is full bodied and lush in taste, where as the exotic fruit vacherin is a light, divine dessert, giving a little taste of a tropical vacation. Thick, creamy, flavorful hot chocolate and frothy lattes concluded the meal, and can heal a horrible day at work, and inflame the stoniest heart. It’s pure ambrosia.
Maison Bouloud is a laudable dining experience. The dishes are neither hackneyed nor forgettable. The technical execution is not overly mechanized so as to leave no room for dynamism. Rather, patrons will be galvanized by the experience and aroused by a new standard in culinary preparation. Maison Bouloud is indelible and must be appreciated and experienced in its seduction of patrons and accomplishment in bringing fine-dining to Beijing. It is a tabernacle of palatable cuisine.

Pinch me, I must be dreaming...
Easily the best restaurant I've been to since leaving Europe -- I've finally found my Beijing 'happy place'. Service -- from the waitstaff down to the washroom attendants -- was impeccable, and the food was both elegantly presented and a delight to the taste buds. I went for Sunday brunch and was overwhelmed by the variety of options, as well as the portion size (large for a restaurant of this caliber). The much-vaunted DB burger was interesting, although not something I will order again (I'm not much of a burger fan to begin with), but my crab and avocado salad, pain perdu, and strawberry rhubarb dessert were simply incredible. There was a charming assortment of bread and pastries throughout the meal, and the madeleines accompanying my coffee were a delightful touch. The final bill, including several drinks and a (well-deserved) 5% service charge, was about 400rmb -- less than I'd paid at a comparable restaurant at which I'd only ordered two courses. In short, I can't wait to return!
One thing to note -- brunch time at the restaurant is extremely family friendly. There were a multitude of little ones running around during my visit, and the staff seemed quite happy to chase after them whilst their parents dined. This did not detract from my experience in the slightest, but if you find the presence of small children unsettling then you might want to visit on a weekday instead.

amazing
The first french restaurant I went to when I arrived in Beijing.
It was simply fantastic. I was stunned by the decor, beautiful. Food was delicious, couldn't decide on what to have so we took the tasting menu with wine pairing.
I eat at many michelin starred restaurants in Europe and MB is right up there at that level.
It was also jam packed! Lovely to be in a busy restaurant.

Can't Say Enough About Maison Boulud
Prior to coming to Beijing, I was in New York City. My girlfriends and I would go out for a fancy dinner every week, usually places like Gramercy Tavern, David Burke & Donatella (now David Burke Townhouse), Tom Colicchio's Craft/Craftbar, etc etc. It was our treat to ourselves for working long hours on Wall Street.
So, when I came to Beijing, I was very excited about trying Maison Boulud, as Chef Daniel Boulud is a legend. The first trip was within a couple weeks of landing; my friend and I went to try out MB during their month long CW Dining out event. What was supposed to be a three course meal turned into a 7-course extravaganza. We ordered from the prix-fixed menu, but while we were waiting for our appetizers, they brought out something extra from the kitchen (these delicate little vegetable creations). Then, there was the waitress we termed the "bread lady" who came around every time you finished that last bite of bread with a serving tray piled high with various types of baked goods.
After our second course, the kitchen sent out another complimentary platter of some type of carpacchio. Then, during our dessert course, once again, we were given an additional platter of various fruity desserts and a piping-hot basket of freshly baked mandarin orange madeleines.
The prices are high here, but the service, atmosphere, and overall dining experience is unbeatable. I've been back several times since, and it is my go-to place to take good friends and visitors.
My lovely mother came to visit for Mother's Day, and I treated her to dinner at MB. I spoke with Ignace, the handsome and impeccably polite General Manager, about surprising her with roses and a necklace. I was just expecting them to bring it out with dessert, but no, they were incredibly wonderful in presenting the necklace on top of a gorgeous cake, and the bouquet of roses was breath-taking. With champagne on the house and countless complimentary tasting dishes, it was a mother's day dinner to never forget. My mom said it was one of the most beautiful restaurants she has ever been to.
Brunch at MB should be something on everyone's to-do list here in Beijing. It's a more laid back environment. They take away the white tablecloths so everyone feels more casual. The sunlight streaming into the dining room inside the former US embassy just makes everything look really classy but casual.
As always, MB was there with extras. My entire group was treated to complimentary summer cocktails while we were waiting for a friend. Such a great touch!
The food at MB...freshest and high quality ingredients. Presentation is gorgeous. Most bites just melt in your mouth. Flavors are intensely individual, and it feels good to let your palate be taken care of by the talented chefs in the kitchen.
The sommelier, Koen (really cute! :) ), is extremely knowledgeable and professional.
Anyways, I think that's a long enough review, but like I said, I really can't say enough good things about Maison Boulud. I've eaten at a lot of restaurants in Beijing, and I've had a lot of delicious food, but Maison Boulud is one of those places that I'll be talking about for years to come. It is definitely a place that I will always return to when I come back to visit Beijing.

Divine and Heavenly ,the Best Place in Beijing so far
This I would rate is so far by best experience on Dining in Beijing .
The ambience so chic, the sofas, the paintings,It was a feeling I am back in NY in one of NY best restaurants.
The Manager spoke immaculate English, all staffes were dressed so well. The staff are amazing. After experiencing the service at quite a few Beijing restaurants to be frustrating this seemed if I was not in Beijing. The people there are just wonderful.
The wine list so exhaustive was something never seen before in Beijing.
The food was divine -We had ordered some version of Tuna fish,Ravoli, the breads,Crab Salad. The sorbet was perfect. The Katafi Crusted Salmon with asparagus tasted so good.
The piping hot basket of french shell-shaped cookies were great.
The breads would get refilled without you asking for.
Gorgeous,Fantastic, words are short to describe this experience.
All best things come at price and so does this place. But its every penny spent worth for the experience.
You could see pics of the chef with best people in the World and if you want to have a drink privately with a smoke there is a nice bar on the left .
I just love this place and would visit soon again at the right occassion though!

Silver service has finally arrived in Beijing
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to eat in a place where people aren't spitting on the floor, where waiters/waitresses aren't repeating "mashang.. mashang", where guests don't have to yell "fuwuyuan" at the top of their lungs just to get a glass of water?
Well... stop wondering. First class service has finally arrived in Beijing.
The staff at this place are falling over hand and foot to give you everything possible. Your bread plate will never be empty. Your glass will never be empty. You will never lack napkins to wipe your mouth or hands.
But more importantly, your taste buds will be tingling with joy at finally being able to sample something from a great chef in Beijing.
The dinner menu is pricy as hell, so I'd recommend you to go for the business lunch to get a full sampler of their tasty food. yeah... 165rmb might be expensive. yeah the 10-15% service charge may be a whollop... but it's worth it. all of their entrees are great. i was a bit trepiditious eating the steak tartar in china, but not any more. the flavour was so wonderful, and the poached quails eggyolk on the top was just devine. in terms of mains... wow... the lamb with couscous was sensational. so juicy and spicy at the same time. you must try the chocolate tarts with citrus sorbet! wow... to die for. the poached pears with 5-spice sorbet is mouth watering as well..
Overall... nothing but praise for this place. excellent service, excellent food. prices are expensive, but as i said... worth it.
there is parking outside for those who need it, and there is baby chairs for families who need it too. the manager and staff are very considerate to families.
so... if you are looking for a way to kick start the economy... this is the place to spend it..
