Metro 美特柔

One of Beijing’s longest-operating Italian restaurants remains among the city’s best. Metro’s formal style is more suited to an intimate special occasion than casual pasta dinner, and the prices are in step with that logic. Step one: Choose from over ten types of pasta, including tagliatelle, fettuccine, farfalle, ravioli and more. Step two: Combine your pasta with one of over 50 sauces, grouped into various price brackets according to their complexity. Step three: enjoy. The complimentary bread is straight-out-of-the-oven fresh. The menu also includes fancier fare, with helpful pointers to diners’ favorites. Voted "Outstanding Italian (Affordable)" in the Beijinger's 2011 Restaurant Awards.

Disgusting

Tons of fake reviews for this place. I had it yesterday due to its ratings and its absolutely abhorrent. I would rather eat elementary cafeteria food back home in the states than to even think about this crap!

If the owners spent more time on putting together better food than posting up fake reviews, maybe, just maybe it could be something special...

Is it a joke?

Best italien restaurant, i had to try it.

My friends trust me because i spend all my time thinking about food.
I went really confident to the restaurant.

We took lasagna, salade, pasta. We were all disapointed: food, price...

The deco is nice and service good but it's not the most important.

8 months later, my friends still remember and disappointed by me.

Really overated and expensive

The 30-50 RMB price indication is A JOKE!

80rmb will barely buy you one small dishe of pastas.

We tried the meat with vegetables from the menu and it was a huge disapointment. The meat was dripping with olive oil quite like a soup. Funny think is, the salad before was dry (no dressing at all) like sicily in August.

The food is so-so and for this kind of money I know dozens of better places to go in Beijing.

A pretentious restaurant that MIGHT trick people who know nothing of Italian food but nothing more.

Perfect self-rewarding for yourself!

I have been holding a strong desire to have a taste of the pasta here for a long time. After nearly an hour's ride, I finally made it.
The environment was really nice. The stylish furniture and some outdoor tables reminded me of the lazy afternoon. The waitress' service was helpful, but the way she told with me made me really furious. It seemed that something troublesome had nagged at her for a long time.
Going to the point---- the pasts---- the great new wonderful! Cheese sauce is always my favourate, so undoubtedly I chose the rich cheese cream sauce. And then, a wonderful name came into my sight---- Rich gorgonzola cheese sauce with button mushroom. Perfect! The next big event, which kind of pasta matched it best? I'd love home made pasta, so I chose the spinach tagliatelle. I had to say that it was definitely a ferfect match. The tagliatelle was chewy and the cheese sauce' taste was strong. What's more, the complimentary bread was tasty, too!

one pasta to rule them all

still good after all these years with consistently great pasta, a faantastic choice of sauce and service that exceeds expectations. sure, it's not cheap but it's definitely worth the money you spend on it when you consider the quality you're getting.

One thing most people are not aware off is that they're having their lunch specials throughout the week which can be used for weekend brunch as well. Hearty pasta portions for under rmb 50, steaks, risoto and plenty more.

One Beijing classic! Love them

Metro, an Italian restaurant, peaceful, comfortable and palatable.

Although only once in this restaurant, a very good impress is being in my brain. I like the atmosphere there, and enjoy my leisure time in Metro. Besides, I love the wine and chicken. I'd like recommend my friends to have a try. The price may be little high, that's all!

Nice

This little Italian find is underrated....

We walked in here one cold winter night out of curiousity after living nearby it for so many years and were so pleasantly suprised by both the atmosphere and menu. From the outside it seems like nothing special but is truly a cozy, lovely decor inside. The menu is wonderfully authentically italian and it's great that can pick your own sauces and pastas to create your dish. The wine list is great and so is the price, for what it is. A must go to...!!

It's all about the service ... and the intimate nature of the dining room

The tiny size of this place is what makes dining there such a treat. With only about 12 tables in the whole place, every diner feels like a special guest, and despite the tiny size of the dining room there's enough space at each table to have an intimate dinner without feeling like you are sharing space with the next door strangers.

The service was great -- my wife and I had lingered for an extended period over our appetizer, yet still our entrees came out perfectly timed -- not rushed to us but rather within a short window of having the app plates cleared. The owner of the restaurant is frequently patrolling the dining room and seems to go out of his way to strike up conversations with his patrons, a nice touch.

The food was great though not mind-blowing. I really enjoy their extensive past menu where you can combine your choice of a huge number of pastas with one of their dizzying array of sauces, some of which I've not seen anywhere else in Beijing. My favorite dish was the beef and mushroom ravioli that I ordered with Carbonara sauce -- heavy but satisfying.

Overated

This is an OK Italian just not great like the other reviews would make you think.

The staff and reasturant are very good, high quality, but the food quality is a little lack lustre.

Wine and Chicken dish was very good.

The Shrimp pasta dish was luke warm with hardly any shrimp. The vegatable lasagne was ok just not worth the price.

3 meals and a bottle of wine came to about 600RMB and for the price the quality is just not there.

Personally "Luce" near the Drum Tower is a lot better and of similar prices.

Nothing exotic

The spaghetti was a bit dry on the sauce. The spaghetti Bit hard for me.

The wines selection is good and we had a good time with wine and the starter breads.
I liked the salad and the Risotto but I had more expectations.
The service was fine except for a chinese girl waiter who just does not understand english. The manager was nice.

Metro Café: Pasta and Sauce to Rival Italy

Review of Metro

It has been almost fifteen years and Metro Café is still making mouth watering pasta and sauce. After spending weeks in Naples, Rome, and Sicily, this food critic would even dare to say that Metro’s pasta and sauce is better than anything she ate in Italy. Blasphemy yes, but don’t dispute it until you have tried the Aosta sauce of goose liver and black truffle with the Spinach tagliatelle pasta.
Stepping into Metro Café, one feels as if they have finally found a nice elegant up-market restaurant. The dim lighting and mahogany tables and chairs with jazz music playing in the background, is perfect for an impressive business lunch or a romantic date for two. This is the place you take someone to impress. Unfortunately, that evening some of the other patrons were, I believe, under dressed. Why go somewhere with such great mood lighting if you aren’t going to act the part?
My lovely dinner dates and I began with an excellent bottle of dry rich Penfolds Rawson’s Retrect Merlot. It was surprising to see that they only had two Italian wines on the entire list, but don’t allow that to deter you. The wines they had they selected well, including Australian Wolfbass. Metro is guaranteed to leave you sighing in ecstasy when you try one of their wines. They range from 200 to 2090 rmb per bottle and 48 to 72 rmb per glass.
We were soon served an Aperitif of bruschetta topped with marinated vegetable and tuna. The bread was perfect, soft but not too moist or soaked in olive oil, and very well garlic. It was a very satisfying appetizer that does it job of warming you up for the meal. However, they were much too small, barley a thumb size and with only six pieces, not necessarily worth the 30 rmb.
The bruschetta was followed with Carpaccio, 70 rmb, thin slices of raw beef filled with capers and garlic and topped with a drizzle of olive oil and parmesan cheese. I thought the Carpaccio was lovely, with a good Italian flavor of basil and oil, but my Australian meat-connoisseur husband say that the meat was too heavily juiced with blocked the taste of the meat.
The mozzarella de pomodoro, 75 rmb of fresh buffalo mozzarella and wine ripe tomatoes infused with olive oil and basil, also divided us on opinion. My husband believed it was served too cold, where as I thought the chilled approach was a refreshing change. We both agreed it was nicely herbed.
Our last appetizer was the Grilled asparagus with pine nuts salsa, 50 rmb, mixed with garlic bits and shaved parmesan cheese, and of course topped with herbs and olive oil. It was quite fresh and nice, but nothing overly satiating. We also received brown and white bread with spinach pesto. The bread was excellent even by Beijing standards, and the pesto was unique but mild.
The pasta and sauces to choose from was almost too much! Traditional Italian pasta and sauce tends to focus on the tomato and less heavy sauces. Metro has the traditional simple Italian pasta and sauces, but their Selection B and C on the menu, is filled with almost too-many choices of unique and daring Italian and Mediterranean combinations!
With anticipation my pasta finally arrived. What can I say but that it was excellent by all gourmet standards. Thick and creamy the combination blended itself perfectly. No single ingredient stood out for my taste buds, but just made my tongue moan in pleasure. The quality of ingredients was made to perfection making it almost unnoticeably perfect. The only description that comes to mind is smooth, so smooth.
Now a word of profound advice: Do not order anything but the pasta! My husband ordered the Salerno, which was prawns in tomato and a cream sauce and olive oil with tortellini, which as he said was simply OK. Quite tomato infused it was like any tortellini you would find in any Italian restaurant outside of Italy. The prawns were also too mushy. It filled him up but wasn’t anything special, especially for 63 rmb.
My Chinese consultant, Catherine, ordered the Shrimp and Crabmeat Risotto, Arborio rice tossed with shrimp and crabmeat with asparagus. The risotto rice is made softer than the traditional Italian way, in order to cater to the Chinese customers who oddly are prone to order this dish. Unfortunately for Catherine and for us expats, we found it to be very bland and not worth 85 rmb.
Fortunately, the meal was saved for my two dinner dates with the arrival of the Tiramisu and Molten Lava Chocolate Cake, two dishes we could not find on the menu. The Molten Lava cake was a great volcanic blast of melted smooth hot chocolate sauce encased by a soft cake crust. The tiramisu was also good, though for those who like their Tiramisu to have a good taste of brandy, they will be disappointed. The tiramisu was very light and fluffy, and like a pudding. A good finish to the meal.
Metro Café is the place to go for the pasta, to order anything else would be ridiculous. The Face has done well to blend Mediterranean and Italian dishes together to make some, I would venture, award winning dishes. This trip to Metro Café has made me wonder why eat noodles when you can get “wow” factor pasta in Beijing!

Metro is Fantastic

This is my first review, but after eating at Metro last night for my girlfriend's birthday, I felt I had at least give it a shot.

The food was great. So many choices for pasta and sauces. Plus other dishes like lasagna or meat dishes and so on. They start off by giving you a small strawberry daiquiri (is that the right word?) Then some bread with some green garlicy sauce on the house. We ordered some bruschetta for an appetizer. The flavor was amazing. Almost challenging my grandfathers back home.

We also ordered a cesar salad which was equally good. For the main meal we both ordered cheese tourillini. I had the napoli sauce, her, a cream based sauce that I really can't remember the name of cause there are about 500 sauces to choose from. Let me tell you, that i tried both, and I don't think i've tasted anything so good in my 2.5 years here in Beijing. And that is saying alot because I eat food every day. Really. 3 meals plus snacks.
The portions were just right and the pricing was a little expensive for what im used to. (im a teacher, give me a break)but worth every mao.

It wasn't too crowded so they were always waiting on you without being too intrusive. We ordered wine, but I realized I don't know the first thing about wine tasting, but the waiter assured me it was good (not that i can tell, but it was). After we were finished, I brought out small pieces of cake we got earlier and i put some candles in. Instead of being upset that we had outside food, they actually lit the candles for us, took a photo, and offered us coffee.

I don't want to make this too long, but if you want excellent italian food, need to take your date somewhere, and/or are looking for a relaxed/romantic time where you will be treated like a king/queen, Metro is the place for you.

Highly recommended

This place was all but empty on a Saturday evening... I can't understand why. The food is really very high quality, especially the light, freshly made pasta. We loved the pasta/sauce mix and match concept even though it took us a while to choose!

I ordered the gnocchi - very tasty but I suggest you don't fill up on the complimentary bread and (fantastic) pesto as the portions are HUGE and neither of us could finish ours. They do offer to pack it up for you to take home if you can't manage it all though. The wine list is great, and there's something for everyone's budget with the cheapest glasses from just RMB40 - though they go up to bottles in the thousands! Although we didn't have room for desserts they have a great menu including dessert wines and port.

The decor is simple and attractive, and, as others have said, a touch on the romantic side. It would be a perfect place to go on a date.

Service is friendly, attentive and prompt, though one niggle would be that the waitstaff have nothing to do a lot of the time and consequently pace the restaurant looking very bored!

I really recommend you try Metro - we will certainly be going back soon and hope to fit in some desserts next time!

...is this one never rated as best Italian. For me it is much better than all the other so called "Italian" restaurants. Nothing fancy, no surprises, focus on fresh pasta (they fortunately have no pizza in order not to mess up wwith the pasta I guess..) You get what you got last time...and this makes it relatively unique. Service is good, prices okay an inside could be called romatic without being too "heavy". If you expect something special, don't go, if you want to have good noodles or fish: that's the place

Metro sauce, mmmmm!

Food so consistently wonderful we´ve found ourselves going here at least once a week. Love the simplicity of the menu. Handful of pastas and then a choice of some of the most amazing sauces I´ve tasted. Unfortunately they have a serious mould problem (in the airco) which doesn´t seem to bother anyone but a handful of sensitive people but there outside tables! Nice staff too.
