I took a break from Nathan's after getting cardboard-dry hotdog buns in December 2011. It was terribly disappointing, and I vowed never to return.

I recently went back to their Raffles City location, and decided to give them a try. They have fixed their buns, to my delight! Along with my hotdog, I had a cheeseburger, fries and their pineapple sundae. All spot on, just like they should be, like a recent poster explained. It's American food culture. If you can accept and understand that, you'll love the food; like I do.

I also discovered they have free Wi-Fi. Another plus.

If only they weren't in a basement-level food court.

    too many reviews -average place

Visited this place.Burgers are ok. Nothing like fatburger quality but ,nothing to crib either.
If you are staying in that area or are there shopping or are there is fine to have a burger.Breads are not great but still ok.
But nothing that would get you there just for the burger from a far off place.
I didnt try any other food.

    Nathan's is awesome!

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Beijing. They serve authentic American cuisine. Their chicken tenders and cheeseburgers are some of the best I've had in East Asia. The fries and seafood items are also top-notch.

Nathan's is the perfect destination for an American or Canadian who misses the food he or she grew up with. The staff speak English too!

Chinese who wish to taste authentic New York-style food can't go wrong trying out what Nathan's has to offer. You won't be disappointed.

    Excellent for what it is....

    Nathan's Famous...Junk or Treasure?

The question (no matter what the restaurant's claims about being the best hot dog in the world) is not whether there's a better hot dog somewhere in Beijing. And only an idiot is headed to Nathan's for a gourmet meal, or tries to review and rank it in such a way. The question is, does this restaurant serve food that is a reasonable re-creation of the American Northeast boardwalk junk food we remember so fondly and sometimes miss?

I submit that it is. The hot dog is bang on. It's clearly a Nathan's dog, which is quite a different thing from the Hormel garbage most readily available around here. The first and main ingredient is beef, then water, and then less than 2% of salt, preservatives and natural flavoring like paprika. Nathan's has been making them this way since before most people reading this were born. A health food? Of course not, but it's not supposed to be. (Try to find out what's in other Beijing restaurants' hot dogs, if you want to see REALLY unhealthy.) And all for a LOT cheaper, too. (*Ahem* Blue Frog)

The chili is a tad spicy as it's SUPPOSED to be. That tasteless paste spread on the "hot dogs" at Dairy Queen or Blue Frog is not chili. And the cheese is boardwalk, Coney Island cheese. It's also supposed to be that way. It's a very specific kind of cheese. You don't eat it on gourmet crackers with wine. You pour it over dogs and chips. I personally hate it, but that's a personal preference, and exactly why you can get a dog without the cheese if you want. I may hate it, but that's no reason to give it a bad review when it is exactly what it's supposed to be.

The lemonade is also very good. It tastes just like what you sip as you wander around the boardwalk, trying to decide whether it's worth it to go for that big stuffed bear for your girlfriend.

The fries are also spot on: good fry, just crispy enough, good potato flavor in the soft middle and not too much or too little salt. They're only "strange" if your benchmark for fries is McDonalds.

The plain burger is not what is advertised in the pictures, or what is normal at a Nathan's. Don't expect any onions, lettuce or tomato on it, despite what it looks like on the menu. But considering how you get a minor case of the trots every time you eat lettuce on a Beijing burger, this is probably just as well. The beef itself is decent–tastes like beef. The pickles are good, and it hasn't got too much ketchup (though some mustard would be nice).

The decor is nice, and the booths where you can plug in your own Mp3 player or iPad and entertain yourself are a nice touch, if ultimately fruitless. The service was very good, too, and the packaging for take away will keep things together and warm.

If you like this kind of food–American ballpark, boardwalk, amusement park type food–then go to Nathans. If you don't, then don't go, or at least don't complain to the rest of us about it. If you're craving a hot dog and want one made from real beef, not mystery meat, and with chili that tastes like something, and for less than 80RMB, go to Nathans.

    More than Hot Dogs

To be honest, I was a bit skeptical when I heard Nathan's was coming to Beijing. I was only a mediocre fan of the chain in the US. However, I've checked it out a few times and have been quite surprised. I would say the burgers are on par with BK but I have loved the chicken tenders (tell me where you can find better ones in this city) and the lobster wrap. Seriously, a decent lobster wrap in Beijing? I was impressed. I'm not a fast food junkie by any means but I think the quality is much better than your more well-known chains. So if I'm in the area, I'd choose it over McDonald's across the road. If you don't want to pay for quality, cool. As far as fast food is going, I think they're doing alright.

    Terrible food, fake reviews

Too bad it's not possible to leave negative star ratings to offset all the fake five star reviews. The food here is utter garbage (I'll take Burger King, McDonald's, Subway or some other American fast food chain over this place any day) and extraordinarily overpriced for what you get. If you like nasty processed meat and "bread" products that taste and feel like cardboard, all for 40+ kuai per customer, this might be the place for you.

Very satisfying place to get some quick food

Clean. Fast. Delicious. Satiating. I normally get the chicken tenders, philly cheese wrap, chicken wrap, spicy chicken burger, lobster roll, or the fries and I really like the value and it tastes like American food (which I didn't think I'd miss until I lived in Beijing for a year). I live near this location so it's easy for me to decide where to go if I need a quick, cheap meal to fill me up if I don't feel like preparing a meal.

Oh, and their breakfast sandwich has a real, fresh egg in it! Wonderful.

Nathan's is a nice break from the other restaurant options in the area. Free wi-fi and comfortable environment I like to spend time there and do some work, too.

    Hot Dogs at Nathan's

    Review of Nathan's Famous

    - Like: decent hotdogs for a fair price, booths where you can plug you ipod, friendly and fast service
    - A basic fast food joint with drinks far too sweet (teas or lemon mix) and small french fries serving (Check Paddy O sheas for great quality fries on Dongzhimen wai; or Blue Frog for good hot dogs 60Rmb).
    - Still, go for Nathan's as they're doing some discount on set menu for lunch & afternoon...and they contribute to develop western food offering in Dongzhimen.

This is more like "sit-down fast-food," and the customer service is awesome :-)

    Review of Nathan's Famous
    5

I'm from a food-snob city from the west coast of the US, and this type of "fast-food" is what we would call, "sit-down fast-food." That term is generally given to places that are far better quality than typical fast-food restaurants like McD's, BK, or KFC, but that are not nearly the cost of a "sit-down" restaurant like Red Robin or Ruby Tuesday. That's why I personally love Nathan's so much; when it comes down strictly to bang-for-your-buck, I haven't found any better American food options in Beijing. Of course, places like Blue Frog or Home Plate are great, but the costs of those places (both monetary and time) are significantly higher. If you're looking to get something quick that is of an overall higher-caliber of quality, but that doesn't cost much more than any other fast-food, this is definitely the place.

Also, the customer service here is awesome! Maybe it's because I'm a regular, but the employees actually greet me at the doorway in English! I can't even remember the last time that happened since I've been in China. They are also some of the nicest employees I've encountered at a restaurant in Beijing - I've had so many bad experiences at other restaurants in Beijing where I literally face-palm because of terrible customer service. I'm also impressed because every single one of the employees I've ordered from speaks enough English to help me get exactly what I want without misunderstanding. The environment of the restaurant is really cool, too. The room is well lit and feels really open, plus there are a couple rad booths where you can plug in an mp3 player and listen to your own tunes.

As for the food itself, I'm personally a big fan of the chicken strips (it's like a huge fist-full of chicken for 20 quai!), and I also really enjoy the home-style lemonade as an alternative to soda. The wraps and hot-dogs are pretty good as well, and I also enjoy the cheeseburger quite a lot, especially because it's a really good price for a burger that's made with actual beef - and the patty is really big as well. One of my favorite items is the Philly cheesesteak sandwich. A few of my friends living here are from Philadelphia, and they say that it's not really an authentic Philly cheesesteak, but they still admit that it's really good. One of my friends here is from New York, and he actually said the food at this Nathan's is almost identical in quality and taste to the Nathan's he used to eat at in NY. That fact alone - that I'm eating actual American food just like it's served in the states, and at a super low cost - is reason enough for me to frequent this place. Lastly, the option of getting a beer with your meal at a fast-food burger and dog restaurant is awesome. Yeah, it's not some frothy oak-aged coffee-porter, but when I'm eating a bunch of chicken strips and super-thick steak fries, I'd prefer to be drinking something lighter like a PBR anyway. I should also mention that this food is surprisingly not greasy at all. I never feel like death after eating Nathan's the way that I do when I fall prey to a MacAttack. :-)

As I mentioned above, this food is great quality for fast food, plus it's at a good price (with specials and promotional sales going on all the time), and the customer service is wonderful. Seriously, check it out!

    Surprisingly delicious

Looks and feels like a fast food restaurant, but the food is surprisingly good.

Great hot dogs, good burgers, and the chicken tenders are amazing. Didn't leave me with that heavy, greasy, oh-my-god-what-did-I-eat feeling after finishing, which is what I usually get with KFC, McDonald's, or Chinese fast food joints.

Good food and really convenient for lunch in the Dongzhimen area. Will definitely go again, and might have to use their catering for a party or two.

    Thx Nathan

Since Nathans Famous opened their doors a couple years ago in the desolate Wukesong Area i have been a fan , i trekked from my then Residence in Bagou all the way down to Wukesong to have a taste of what i remembered from Coney Island. I wasn't impressed with the location at all and to this day i still feel their prices could be a little more competitive but the food quality and taste is beyond measure. They then opened in my back yard in bagou where i religiously ate there at least 4 x a week after work and brought my friends also to bite into hands down the best hot dog in the city.
There Menu has grown to accommodate an list of seafood delicacies now. I will continue to support and eat occasionally but my waistline and budget won't allow the same 4x a week pit stops.
I recommend the lobster wrap & my favorite the Lemonade

I have been to the Nathan's in Raffles several times in the couple of months I have been here. As an American, it feels great to get some "food from home". It is also the first time I have gotten some decent cheese fries since arriving in Asia. The cheese is GREAT. tastes just like melted cheese from home. I learned that their cheese and many other condiments are imported directly from the states.

I usually just get the combo set of hot dog + onions, cheese fries, and a lemonade. My usual.
But this time around, I decided to try some new things out.
I ordered the philly cheese steak wrap, and chicken tenders.
Was pleasantly surprised with both. The philly cheese steak was very juicy, and equally tasty.
The chicken tenders were also great, crispy and well seasoned.

Compared to other American fast food restaurants, Nathan's definitely has my vote for taste, quality, price, and customer service.
Had a wonderful experience, as always, and will be back again soon!

I'm not an american guy so I have no ideas of how a real american hot dog should taste, but this kind of liquid "cheese" they put on it is just really disgusting...

For 20 kuai at Let's fries (5 meters from nathan's) you can have a much better hot dog + real hand made french fries ! Yes for 20 Kuai both!

Nevertheless Nathans burgers are really correct and price are ok !

Remember what it is ... but great for what it is!

Nathan's Famous is a fast food chain from New York. I largely agree with other reviewers: if you remember what you're ordering and make comparisons to Nathan's Famous in the US versus the boutique haunts of Beijing gourmands, you're bound to be delighted.

I went with a friend and we tried the chili dog, chili fries, regular fries and a philly cheesesteak. The philly cheesesteak was the same as Nathan's in the US, but anyone from Philadelphia would be disappointed. It's served on a hot dog bun, lightly toasted and heavily buttered. The meat itself is cooked and chopped properly, but lacks the glistening, bun-soaking, dripping grease that you would find on a proper Philly cheesesteak. There was an adequate quantity of white cheese (or maybe cheese sauce, hard to tell), but no other sauce to accompany it. Also, there wasn't an "ultimate" option - only grilled onions. Still, it's the same as in the US, so five stars--remember what you're ordering, and don't project Philadelphia onto a New York establishment. Two cheesesteaks from Nathan's is about the same amount of food as one real Philly cheesesteak.

I ordered the set - for a drink, a 4 kuai upsell to Beijing draft beer, inexplicably served in a soda cup with a lid and straw. It had a vaguely collegiate feel, bringing back memories of sneaking around campus with rum in my Coke. I took off the lid and drank it without the straw - a little flat, but it's Beijing draft beer, which is always a little flat anyway. Not taking off any points for this. Another 4 kuai upsell to chili cheese fries. They came with a spicy chili, warm but not hot, with pasteurized process cheese food sauce - yummy, chemically synthesized goodness, authentic artificial flavors from a faraway factory somewhere in New Jersey.

My Chinese friend enjoyed his first New York chili cheese dog, accompanied by milk tea--a nod to the fact that this location is, indeed, in China, not a distant Connecticut suburb. He was surprised and delighted by the flavor, much different than a typical Chinese hot dog, and made the whole thing disappear in record time along with an entire order of crinkle fries.

Blue Frog, Nathan's ain't. But the bill was 81 kuai for two people, and we didn't even have to schlep to Sanlitun! Not many restaurants are worth venturing forth from my Andingmen stomping grounds, but Nathan's may just make my short list.

Although I'm a bit of a fast food skeptic, I had gotten some good reviews from reliable friends so I figured it was worth a try and I'm really glad I did! Since it was my first time I tried a little sampling. The hamburger and hotdog are all beef and you can really tell the taste difference from anything like mac Donald's or DQ. By far my favorite was the Philly cheese wrap, was so good!!! The best part was i didn't have that heavy gross feeling that normally follows fast-food meals (especially after how much I ate!). I would recommend Nathan's to anyone :)

we ordered delivery from this place on jinshisong.com just to see if the restaurant would be worth a visit some time.

Super cheeseburger, Cheese dog, Chili cheese fries.

    Absolutely inedible.

It was completely cold. It took more than one hour (though this could be delivery guys fault). They gave me one tiny spoonful of meat chili sauce, not enough for 2 Fries and the cheese sauce was foul. The fries were cold and soggy and had that gritty powdery texture of frozen potato which is then under-cooked. The hot dog bun was the driest bread i have ever tasted and it was 1/3 the size of the hot dog itself, the burger bun was the same, dry sweet yellow Jingkelong bread. The mayonnaise on the burger was so sweet and the Chinese brand ketchup packets were gross. We threw all the food away. Total waste of money. Disgusting. Glad we didn't go all the way to Dongzhimen for it.

I don't think a place like this should be on a delivery website, they took way to long. But even ignoring the coldness of everything, it was still revolting.

I was invited to Nathan's by a friend and initially wasn't too keen on eating at yet another greasy fast food chain. To my surprise, Nathan's was not at all what I expected. I ordered the new Lobster snack wrap and was absolutely blown away at how fast, fresh and delicious it was! I should have ordered the corn instead of french fries, but didn't think quickly enough! I did also get to sample a few of my friend's wings and chicken fingers, which were great! I was very pleased, and pleasantly surprised, with my experience and anytime I'm in the area, will definitely stop in for another meal!

The other day walking thru Raffles I came across a Nathans. I didnt know there was one in Beijing. I love Nathans fries. Well i walked inside not sure what to expect , and to my surprise, I though it was actually better then my experiences in the States. The serivce was great. The cashier understood my order, which does not happen in McDonalds or KFC. The food was pretty much the same. They had this promotion for wraps. Tired the philly.... it was great, but most important the fries were the same. I love Nathans Fries. I have good experience for fast food. Happy to have found it.

PS they have these booth that let you hook up you ipod, it was cool!

On my way back from a dolphin dive, I stumbled upon a new Dongzhimen location of Nathan's Famous in the basement of Raffles City. Having grown up in New Jersey, I knew Nathan's well and liked it -- they were always cleaner and better than other fast food places.

I had the chili cheese dog, which did not disappoint, and was surprisingly spicy. Seeing something different, I decided to try the lobster wrap -- which actually falls under Nathan's "Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips" brand, which I remember having with my grandmother when I was a kid. The portion was a bit small, but very tasty, and a little healthier than the rest of my order. Their lemonade also tastes like it was made with lemons -- not just sugar, water and something citrus.

I'd definitely go back -- too much mystery meat in other Beijing hot dogs. Nice to know they have expanded into a more convenient spot. How about a Shuang Jing location?

    Pleasantly surprised!

I have to say I agree with redsandsfr's review. This isn't Blue Frog in Sanlitun, Nathan's Famous is the equivalent of American fast food/fast casual so expectations should be a little more reasonable. It looks as if Nathans have seen previous reviews and listened... because I've tried some of the exact dishes (clam chowder, chili dog, philly cheese steak etc) that have been negatively reviewed and it's literally nothing like what some people have said about them. Did they do an entire overhaul of their menu? Did I walk into a completely different restaurant? I have no idea, but I feel the need to write my own review of the menu items I tried.

New England Clam Chowder: My favorite menu item. I'm not even sure if Beijing has clam chowder at all, so I expected this to pretty much be a thin cream with a few badly cooked clams floating around - boy, was I wrong. Nathan's clam chowder is a savory broth chock full of potatoes, bacon(!), clams, and onions. I didn't expect to get such a hearty, chunky, yummy soup from a place that's suppose to be known for hot dogs. Yes, it is a little expensive but well worth it. This is the menu item I'd go back for.

Philly Cheese Steak: Having been properly wow'ed by the items I shared with friends during my first time there, I brought a philly cheese steak home for my boyfriend. He later said that he had never properly missed home since coming to Beijing until he took his first bite of that philly. Enough said. My take on it - seasoned beef and onions on a toasted bun topped with melted cheese. What's not to like?

Chicken Wings: Someone said a typical Asian sweet/spicy flavor. Mine were literally a completely different flavor, which makes me think this may have been changed? The ones I had were a very quality American spicy honey barbecue flavor. The glaze was definitely something to write home about, you can taste a subtle molassas with a slight smokiness. Amazing.

Milk tea: Like many American chains adapted to the Chinese market, Nathan's has naicha. And it is good! Not overly sweet, and weirdly enough, I liked it better than soda to tame the spice when washing down their chili dog.

In short, when boyfriend and I just can't take another day of Chinese food, can't stomach McDonald's or KFC, and don't want to spend a ton of money, Nathan's is our new favorite!
