Do Not Join This Gym

Review of Ozone Fitness

In September 2011 they closed 2 more of their locations: Guomao and Blue Castle without ANY WARNING. I went to the gym one evening and showed up the next morning to a closure notice.

After having them "confirm" that they would return the remainder of my money - according to our contract - they have delayed for over 2 months and are still unwilling to return a petty sum.

My recommendation: Have nothing to do with this gym!

Ridiculous price

Unless you are extremely wealthy, you don't want to go near this place. They want 4500 for a 1 year membership. That's a premium price for a really good gym in a western country. And from what I saw the gym is not really good. The machines looked ok, but the place was pretty rough looking, with concrete floors and dust everywhere. It was dark inside, and when i asked why they didn't turn on the lights they said they thought the light from the window was enough. Not one person spoke English either, so i had to muddle my way through in Chinese. This is the Upper East Side location i'm talking about. Other locations may be better, i don't know.

Beware of Ozone Fitness - they close down on you with no notice - no money back

<< Update October 2010:
Bally has taken over Ozone Park Avenue and promptly declared the place unfit for use and closed until further notice - not a big surprise given the lies in the runup to the 'friendly handover'.
Bally is not doing a good job and Ozone is well, scraping floors.

Before getting a membership at Ozone fitness, you may want to investigate other centers, Ozone has just closed its 'flagship' branch at Park Avenue on its members, and is refusing to reimburse members, even those who bought only one week before the closure. Does not bode well for other clubs nor for general attitude of Ozone towards its members.

LETTER OF PROTEST

To: Howard T. Quach, Founder of Beijing Ozone Fitness Co. Ltd. (“Ozone”)
Tomer Rothschild, CEO of Beijing Ozone Fitness Co. Ltd.

We, the members of Beijing Ozone Fitness Co. Ltd.’s Park Avenue Branch (“Ozone Park Avenue”), hereby submit our demands as follows:

WHEREAS:-
1. Ozone Park Avenue closed down abruptly without any advanced notice on 6 March 2010;
2. The notice posted on the sealed door stipulated that Ozone Park Avenue members would be transferred to other branches of Ozone. However, we members joined Ozone Park Avenue on the premise that its location is convenient to us. Transferring to other branches, none of which is within walking distance, would create a huge inconvenience and is not in line with our reasons for joining Ozone Park Avenue. We do not agree to such an arrangement;
3. That Ozone itself sealed its premises signifies that it was Ozone’s decision to close down the branch. It is arguable that Ozone’s Management had known about the imminent closing of the branch. However, Ozone Park Avenue continued to aggressively promote, sign on new members and renew existing memberships in the run up to 6 March 2010. Members received mobile texts and telephone calls about special promotions and sales in February 2010. There are members who joined and made payments just several days before 6 March 2010;
4. No decision maker from Ozone has explained matters to us to date. No written or verbal notices have been given to members to date; and
5. We strongly censure Ozone’s unethical and unprofessional behavior and Ozone’s mishandling of its members.

DEMANDS:-
1.The legal representative of Ozone is to offer a public statement on the reasons for Ozone Park Avenue’s closure, and to offer a public apology to the members;
2.Ozone is to offer a refund for the services for which we made payment but which we did not receive, including membership fees and personal training sessions; and
3.Ozone is to compensate members for losses incurred in the abrupt closure of Ozone Park Avenue.

We demand a reply from the legal representative of Ozone by 16 March 2010.

In the run up to World Consumer Rights Day on March 15, both the Chinese media and the citizens are paying particular attention to consumer protection. In view of Ozone Park Avenue’s closure without reasonable notice and legitimate cause and without fulfilling your obligation to provide us with reasonable services, we reserve the right to take further action in order to protect our rights as consumers.

Yours sincerely,
The Members of Ozone Park Avenue

Fabulous Atmosphere and Friendly Trainers

We moved in to our new place and this gym is just across from our building. Very convenient as we can now go almost everyday after work. We love the pool. It's one of the best we've seen so far of all the other gyms we were members of in China. It's quite new so the work out area isn't as busy even on weekends. There's even a tennis court that you can rent if you feel like hitting some balls. Trainers there are attentive without being overbearing. I was looking at instructions on one of the machines and a trainer walked up and asked if he could offer any help. Done very politely. We chatted a little bit and he saw I had a drinking bottle with me. He briefly mentioned about the water dispenser at the other end of the room if I wanted to refill. Very thoughtful and nice.

Zhongguancun Ozone Gets a Thumbs Up

This gym seems to have some rather unfavorable reviews. In my experience though, it has been mostly positive. I went to the Ozone gym in the Zhongguancun area for 6 mos. Maybe the other locations are not as nice.

I thought this gym was pretty nice. Previously I went to a really cheap Hokay Chinese one, which I ended up quitting because it was just so bare-bones and hardly ever open. The area is huge, two floors, with the top floor for classes, plus a pool. It gets a little crowded on weeknights after work but usually I wouldn't wait more than 15 minutes or so for a treadmill. They also have a nice waiting area with tables where you can read, etc.

The locker room was decently sized and the showers were pretty clean (at least the women's), with a sauna that was much needed in the Beijing winters.

I do think it's probably a bit too expensive, and as a foreigner, I know they gave me a totally inflated price, but that's Beijing for you. I'm not sure about the trainers or the classes, as I didn't use either. Overall I was pretty satisfied with this place and would probably join it again.

Dirty and mediocre

This gym is advertised as a "western" gym, but it is indeed very Chinese. In fact the staff does not speak a single word English.

I had a bad start with the sales people desperately trying to drive up the membership price with all kinds of scams, I had to bargain for more than an hour to get a proper price. Very annoying and tiring, and seems like they are trying to take advantage of non-Chinese judging from how my Chinese friends got a much better offer right off the bat.

The swimming pool is overcrowded, which would not be too bad if people just bothered to follow the simple rules of staying in the correct lane. But you see fat, lazy people hanging out in the fast lane chatting like it's some kind of jacuzzi, blocking anyone who actually wants to have some actual exercise. For a proper swim you need to carefully pick the time. In general people never seem to care much about gym regulations, groaning loudly when lifting puny weights which they then slam on the floor to advertise how strong they think they are, and walking around showing off their bare bellies. Gross.

I suppose the points above says more about Chinese than the gym itself though, but it's definitively not a "western" environment as they advertise.

The hygiene standards are very poor. The locker rooms smells like pee, which is probably due to the fact the cleaner is rubbing a dirty cloth around in the bathroom then rubbing the same cloth all over the locker room floor afterward, bar any trace of soap or cleaning liquid. To "clean" the sandals used in the swimming pool area, they throw them in a barrel with dirty water. This is a good place to get fungus or other fun diseases for your feet I think.

The male staff are quite friendly - to any girls they want to pick up. You see them swarm around girls working out. If you need them to spot you or help out in any way, they'll do it reluctantly (unless of course you're an attractive girl, then you will find their hands "helping" you all over your body).

On the bright side, the classes are quite good, you find all kinds of classes included in the price. Yoga, spinning and what not. This is the only reason you should consider Ozone. And the machines are relatively new, and they have quite a good selection of them as well.

Note, I only tried three of their branches, some are better than others. I also tried several other gyms in Beijing, smaller traditional Chinese ones, and I'd say except for the classes, Ozone is just like any much cheaper Chinese gym.

Burned Out on Blue Castle Branch

I had a membership to this place from when it was Evolution Fitness and stuck with them through the handover.

Things were reasonable at the start, but things started going downhill after Evolution pulled out and Ozone took over.

To be fair, the two companies are about the same as far as level of service and management (so I'm not implying that Evolution - which is now defunct - is better than Ozone), but my experience here is all-too typical of many gym-goers in Beijing.

I prefer(red) swimming as my main workout routine - the pool here (35-meters, if I am not mistaken) is serviceable enough when it's not crowded. But up until I stopped going a few months back, it had become increasingly impossible to get in a decent swim with all the people in the pool, especially during lunch time when the big corporate membership crowds take over and basic swimming etiquette (i.e. sticking to one lane, not milling about in the middle) goes down the drain.

Then there was the extra RMB 500 "towel fee" I got rooked into paying when I last renewed my membership (over a year and a half ago, and before the change of owners) - it essentially turned out to be a ploy to squeeze extra money out of me at a time when Evolution was going out of business and it never sat right with me that I ended up paying extra for what eventually reverted back to a standard operating procedure after Ozone took over.

The next thing to go were the soap and shampoo in the showers, and throughout my membership here there has been a constant practice of "disinfecting" the shower room flip flops by throwing them in a large bucket of tepid, brown water, and I was constantly having to battle gym staff for the few remaining open lockers in the swimming pool locker room.

Many of the problems described above are typical of gyms in Beijing, and yes, I got a few extra months tacked onto my existing membership as recompense for the less-than-smooth ownership transition, but unfortunately Ozone's less-than-stellar management and the niggling skimping on materials have completely turned me off to this place - hence I let my membership run out without renewing.

ATTENTION ALL EXPAT'S!

Ozone is going out of business in 2009 Soho Club close down, and as of March 5 2010
Park Ave close it's doors, Wanjing and the Gate were transfer to other investors.

If you had sign up on a membership with Ozone there is a chanse that you might not get
your money back beacause their contracts are in Chinese and there is a clause that
states that you are not able get your money back if your membership exceed more that 7 days
or if you relocate,there might be a possible chanse that you can get your money if go to their corporate office located in Zhubang 2000 and talk to Howard Quach the founder of Ozone Fitness or Tomer Rothschild the CEO of Ozone Fitness several of members including my self got our money back but you have to be extreamly agressive with these characters.

Good Luck!

Good facilities but the instructor cost ?

I visited this place with a friend who goes here and is a member.

The facilties are good here.

The quality of machines and the range ,excellent.

Only thing to handle is the instructor fees, seems each session around 200-400 rmb depending on some levels.

The membership fees seem fine.
