It's not working.
The kitchen is filthy. The clown working there clearly does not know about hygeine. Can not prepare more than one thing at a time. Why have an open kitchen if everyone can see the lack of cleanliness? Clearly no cleaning done the night before and stuff is left to fester overnight. How do you know stuff is cleaned properly in the morning?
Downstairs also really dirty, esp the sink area.
Service generally very poor. If you are outside, forget about service. Obediently keep going in and out to ask the group of staff chatting at the counter for what you want (usually what they have forgotten). Delivery not worth the hassle. In O Sole Mio next door the service is excellent, why not at PG?
The managers need to start doing their jobs. There should be a manager there all the time. The place needs to be clean (especially in the morning). The kitchen needs to be scrubbed. The guy who works there needs to be shown how to keep stuff tidy.
For the most expensive sandwiches around you should get much, much better than this.

I just came back from the most surreal experience I've had in China.
First, I ordered an eggplant sandwich, and it came out with no eggplant on it. Instead of taking it back and fixing it, they brought me out 3 slices of eggplant (for a sandwich cut into fours) about 15 minutes later. I also ordered a Diet Coke that didn't come for another 30 minutes when I realized it hadn't come and asked again.

Then the bill came, and all hell broke loose. They charged us 16 RMB for the french fries, but the menu said 12RMB. We asked the waiter, and he started saying that it was 16, so we asked to see the menu. After a delay in which we're guessing they tried to change the price on the menu bc there was a fresh indentation over the number but no ink, the waiter brought out the menu, which said 12 RMB. We started telling him that it said 12, so they should charge 12, when I saw the manager. I motioned him over, and WOW!

I told him that the menu said 12 RMB, but they were charging 16RMB. He said that the price changed, what is he supposed to do about it. I said that they should either charge us 12 or change the menu. He said that it was 16 kuai and asked why I had such a bad attitude (at this point he was yelling), which shocked me. I just looked at him, and my friends started talking. My friend said that we didn't have a bad attitude, but you should charge the same price as what's on the menu. The manager got really mad, said he had a bad attitude too, that he managed three great restaurants and knows what he's doing, but if we were going to be so rude about it, he would charge us 12 (which he didn't do). Then he went inside.

The waitress came out and started apologizing to us repeatedly. We were kind of in a haze. My friends live across the street and eat there several times a week. I usually go every weekend. We just told her that we wouldn't be back after that. Hearing that (because he was just inside the door), the manager walked back out and started yelling again something about we could go eat crap at Panino Teca but their restaurant was better or something... clearly anger issues that had nothing to do with us. No idea where that came from. The waiters rushed him back inside.

We paid the full bill (16 kuai for the fries) and left. We turned back around as we were walking away, and he was standing outside. He flipped us his middle finger to make sure we knew how he felt.

So, there ya go! We will NEVER be back!! I will look up what the other two restaurants he runs are, and I guarantee none of us will go there either!

This last Sunday afternoon, I ordered one of the sandwiches with grilled Chicken, After a lengthy wait by any reasonable standard, the sandwich finally arrived. I was dumbfounded to find not a very small amount of underdone, as in raw in the middle, chicken!

It's almost entirely all bread, with room temp, underdone meat. The meat was translucent, pink -- RAW chicken. I was a line chef, I know what raw chicken looks like.

I sent it back, according to the server, the chef countered that it was looking at a tomato...and sent it back to my table!

I then smiled, stuck the raw meat with a toothpick and pulled it out of the sandwich and sent it back yet a second time, and ordered the soup of the day that took another 25 min to arrive.

I won't be back. And I told all my friends and wrote a post here, first one in years because simply there is no excuse for what happened -- it shows lack of pride, on the part of the chef, lack of training for the front of house and lack of standards. I still go to tecca but never back to the other branch.

Panino Teca used to be my automatic stop for sandwiches on the weekend, but I've stopped by this place more often recently. A few comparisons.

Service
Teca - Generally ok, but no manager ever seems to be around. The staff are often messing around, punching each other etc. If they're doing that in full view of the customers, I don't want to think what goes on in the kitchen.
Giusto - Some of them have an interesting sense of humor, and they need a bit more training - starting with cutting sandwiches into 2 or 4 pieces. But at least the manager seems to be around the place quite often and looks like he cares what is going on.

Food
More or less the same, really. Big sandwiches with plenty of choice of fillings and breads, big salads, good value (Giusto is about RMB 2 cheaper on most items). Giusto does better on daily specials - pasta etc - and breakfasts.

Environment
Teca - Village one has a nice city center buzz.
Giusto - I feel it's lacking something inside, and the upstairs feels kind of empty. Maybe more music or better lighting would help.

Music
I can't remember what Giusto plays, but Panino Teca has had the same three songs on repeat for the last year, so Giusto wins. Katy f&%$*ng Perry.

I need to vary up my eating habits ...

I would definitely give it a 5 if it wasn't for the small amount of "things" they put into every panino/sandwich. The taste is great but you really have to enjoy the precious moment where you actually taste something, otherwise the panino tastes like a delicious plain bread. We ordered six sandwiches and three salads and we all had the same feeling. Really good taste, high quality and fresh products but you can actually count how many of everything they put inside -with just one hand!- I recommend it, the place is comfortable, clean and luminous. But for the future, you have to start demanding fatter and richer sandwiches!
