Pass By Bar 过客
A favorite for foreigners and tourists residing in the neighborhood, this pleasant courtyard bar and restaurant is an ideal place to fuel up and enjoy a conversation or surf the net on your laptop. Tibetan prints and wooden masks adorn the walls and there's a selection of reading material to browse and borrow (if you donate three books). The menu skewers towards Italian and they do a decent range of pizzas (including the famous gongbao jiding pizza - kung pao chicken pizza) and pastas.

Relaxing place to grab a beer
The Pass By Bar offers a nicely decorated backpacker style restaurant/bar in an awesome location on Nanluoguxiang. They have seating inside and also on a rooftop terrace. They have Italian dishes but are well-known for their roasted mutton and kung pow chicken pizzas. They have a nice selection of beer ranging from Beijing drafts to Franziskaner. The rooftop service can be a little slow during the afternoon when there is not much staff.

Pass on Pass By
The neighborhood is terrific, the atmosphere is amazing, but some things are unforgivable. Fake booze and watered down tea are sins I can't overlook.
Pass By Bar is in a comfortable courtyard location, warm inside with a comfortably decorated atmosphere and a collection of probably every Lonely Planet ever published. We didn't order any food from the menu, mostly standard Western fare. It was the usual pizzas and sandwiches and so forth that you'll find at any place that gets popular mention in the Lonely Planet, and the Pass By Bar has been featured prominently there for years. The drink menu is extensive although a big red flag is charging separately for the booze and the mixer, just another way to jam you for another 5 kuai hoping you won't notice.
Fine, scotch then. I ordered a Johnny Walker black, and my friend ordered a vodka cocktail that didn't seem to cost extra. He thought it was a little off but being younger and more adventurous than me didn't really care. I picked up the scotch, gave it a sniff, and was nearly knocked over by the smell of rubbing alcohol. I called the waiter and asked to see the bottle, and the bartender pulled it off the shelf. It looked moderately suspicious, but the booze in the bottle had the same rubbing alcohol smell. "Same," said the waiter.
I was very clearly not happy, but wasn't going to get anywhere without a big argument so I went and sat back down. Took a tiny taste, just to confirm my suspicions - ever had scotch mixed with cheap bai jiu? Couldn't swallow, spat it out, and didn't touch the rest of the drink.
The bill arrived, 38 kuai for something undrinkable. As we were paying the bill, two restaurant staffers started watering down tea in full view of everyone (it was a slow night). Strikes one and two, doesn't matter, I won't allow a third to happen. Recommend you pass on Pass By Bar.

Best Italian I've had in Beijing
My friends recommended this place, and I'd have to say I was skeptical at first. Pass By Bar? Why on earth would they have good Italian food. But boy was I glad I gave it a chance. First of all, the prices aren't bad at all. I had a STRONG and LARGE martini (hard to come by around here) for only 30kuai. The Eggplant Appetizer was amazing! You can't make me happier than when you put goat cheese, walnuts and balsamic vinegar in between layers of marinated eggplant. This place is great for vegetarians too. I had the Spinach and Ricotta Ravioli in Cream Sauce and it was delicious. The portions of pasta look small, but they really fill you up and are less than 40kuai. For dessert my friends and I split three things. The cheese cake was alright, nothing real special, it had no adornments and was quite small. The Raspberry White Chocolate Cake was the best we tried, it had three different layers and was decorated with sauces and whip cream; quite delectable. The Banana Boat was like your traditional banana split, but the chocolate ice cream had pieces of chocolate in it, definitely a nice surprise. Overall I'd have to say you must give this place a chance; it was definitely worth it. I've definitely spent a lot more money for a lot less satisfaction in this city.

Best pesto pasta I've had in a while
The Italian food here is better than most highly-rated Italian restaurants in Beijing. And bread. Each table gets bread and butter, which is a huge deal for a foreigner like me who can't easily find good bread in the city. The atmosphere at PassBy is very laid-back - great for conversation and drinks.

We are all Pass-byers
The place itself is a combo of restaurant, bar, book store, photo exhibit and original galary.
It reminds us that everyone of us is a pass-byer of life. All kinds of people find their favorite part out of here: the bag packers hold up their LP guide, fashion lovers gather the new selection of original designed T-shirts and postures, group of friends take up the long tables in the door room, friends get a drink and relax on the comfie chairs by the window...
Pass-by bar had made the initiate of the growth of the old Hutong area, and therefore, to some extent, protected the history and started a model of reuse the old district. As eventually a pass-byer, it realized its value and ambition.

Great pasta!
I ended up eating at this place accidentally (met a friend for drinks and then we had dinner) but it surpassed my expectations by a lot. The menu is mostly Italian, and I was expecting kind of mediocre pasta and pizza, but the pasta I got (penne with alfredo sauce) was very, very good. The menu was set up so you could mix and match sauces, which was nice since it maximized combinations, and the very generous portion of pasta was 45 kuai if I remember correctly. The pasta was perfectly cooked, slightly aldente, and the sauce was rich and flavorful (they put a lot of parmesean in it, which was great). Having grown up on mostly Italian food, I was really impressed by the quality of the sauce in particular and it's one of the better Italian meals I've had in Beijing by far. The decor is unimpressive, but the food makes the experience worth it. If you're in the nanluoguxiang area, definitely give pass by a chance--it's worth much more than a glance!

Nice courtyard, great drinks
Pass By has a nice, relaxing atmosphere for a night out- their courtyard is great for a summer night, and quieter than nearby Houhai bars. Another great perk of being away from Houhai is the prices- only 30 kuai for generously-sized cocktails. They make a pretty good mojito. They also have a good selection of draft beer.
Friends I went with ordered dinner from their selection of Italian food. Everyone was very happy with their pasta dishes, and kept ordering more bread for the table. The only disappointment of the evening was a friend's order of panna cotta, which ended up being a bowl of clumpy brown something, that looked nothing like any panna cotta we'd seen before.
Overall, great drinks, great prices, I'll be back.

Seen better days, but still packs 'em in
Still popular, but this old backpacker spot gets more out of place as the neighborhood around it grows up. Coffee is good (but expensive), and covered courtyard very pleasant in winter. Novelty pizzas aren't bad by local standards, and the same goes for the salads, onion rings and fries. Nice German lager on draft too.

Nice courtyard Bad Pizza
The courtyard here is great during warmer times and the cozy indoor section is great in winter. The menu is interesting and worldly. The decorations are classic beijing and the staff are friendly.
The cheese on the pizza is of very low quality made mostly of oil. Perhaps that is a good thing in the melamine scandal days but it makes for a very greasy disgusting pizza. order something else.
