Power house gym of dongzhimen

I ve been a customer of this gym for about 4years. At first it was really worth it. There were located in dongsishijiao in a big space with modern machines. Then they relocated in dongzhimen (ginza mall) I was really disappointed because it is much smaller but i kept going there because the price was ok and i made some friends. Unfortunately it has decreased more and more. In summer it is so hot that you sweat even if you just walk a bit. As my favorite activity is running, i get wet completely after 10mins. Morever because of the almost inexistant aircon they open the windows so it smells of macdonalds inside and everywhere. Doing sport and smelling frenchfries and hamburgers at the same time doesn't really make you feel healthy.... The cloakroom is so small that sometimes you cant find free cases to put you things in. In the afternnoon it is so busy that you have to queue for the running and fitness machine. The toilets should be more often cleaned because it smells of pee every time.

To conclude : AVOID IT i think that there are much better gym places in Beijing expecially since the price rose up to 4000yuan a year making it one of the worst price/money value of beijing. They still have a lot of customers in the afternoon because there are a lot of westerners in dongzhimen and there are almost no competition in the area.

I personally changed and prefer to spend an extra 15min going to my new gym place than going to powerhouse.

Only good advantage is that is it very closed to the subway...

Good value

Definitely recommend this gym and the pool.
All clean, uncrowded (esp in the mornings) and in good working order.

I see that no one is discussing what they paid to join up.
Apparently a year long membership including pool and all of the classes should be around 3,500 per year.
Cheaper obviously if you give up the pool.

They seem very open to negotiation and every now and then they run pretty good promotions including a week-long 2009 New Years one where membership cost 2009 RMB for one year. More recently I signed up during the World Cup and picked Spain to win so got a hefty discount on my membership. Who says gambling is illegal in China?

First of all, thanks to the first review for the Powerhouse. The place is really a little bit hard to find but two weeks ago i found it and signed my membership. I am only in Beijing for a few month but they have good rates for all wants. The stuff speaks a good english and are really helpful.

The machines are in a good condition and the place it usually not too overcrowded. I only miss some extra services like free water or free towels. They offers a lot of classes like dancing or boxing.

Finally, it offers all you really need.

Best Gym?

Me and my friend ventured to check out this gym. We didn't have a hard time following the instruction from the previous comments below. We arrived at the Dongzhimen gym early morning and was greeted by a Chinese speaking trainer. He showed us around and even though some said it's big, i think the Dongzhimen site is a tad small though it boasts of a lot of facilities like pool, tennis and basketball court, weight lifting, and exercise machines. It's sort of like a maze with a lot of doors and it would take some getting used to before you end up not getting lost.

They also offer a 15-day trial which is good. They strive for trial users to get acquainted to the place, their trainers are nice enough to offer advise and teach you how to work the machines depending on which body part you want to improve on.

The staff are also pro active in calling members and trial users whenever they have offerings like body check up and stuff. Overall, i think the gym is nice if not for the expensive membership fees they quote foreigners.

Not a Western gym, but best I've found.

I had a tough time finding it, but now that I've confirmed Powerhouse Dongzhimen exists and tried it out, I'm a proud card-carrying member. I was very close to gritting my teeth and going with Hokay, but when I called them a very helpful sales guy named Kaka helped me by picking me up from the subway. His English is pretty good and he's very helpful.

Here's my impression from one workout: the treadmills are quality; the ellipticals so-so. Weight-lifting machines are pretty good. The gym seems clean and well-maintained, if somewhat small (there are maybe 12 treadmills?). The locker room is small but seems ok. Showers are excellent.

Is it a Western gym? No. No drinking water, shampoo or soap, workout towels or shower towels appear to be provided. However, it's warm, and the Beijing streets are so cold, and you can get to it from the Dongzhimen subway without even going outside...it opens at 7 am on weekdays, 10 on weekends, and stays open till 10. I was told they don't close for holidays so I hope that's true.

Where and When

Great gym, has loads of every type of machine, a 25m pool and (perhaps most importantly native English speakers working there) During the day it's not too busy so you can always get what you want in the evening (5-7pm) it can be a little busy but there's always at least a few thing available to use.

The information on here is a little out of date. The Powerhouse Gym now opens a lot earlier (7:30am). They've now also employed an English member of staff so you don't need to speak any Chinese to get a tour/find out about the prices/ask questions.

The gym can be a little hard to find the first time. The easiest way is to get off DongZhiMen subway exit B (but don't go outside take the Ginza Mall side exit in the tunnel then go upto ground level (still inside the mall) and find the lifts, but DON'T get in the first set of lifts, there's a metal door to the right of them, go through there and you'll find yourself in another entrance hall, take the lifts there to floor C and you'll see the reception.
